Group meeting forwards and midfielders get in here. We need to work out how we're going to play on this m************ Centre half back

What a shame and a sad way to go out. He was an impenetrable wall in defence. One of the best defenders I've ever seen in my time. I swear our game plan was to kick to McGovern every time we played the Eagles.

Hopefully Melbourne supporters don't go too hard on Jake.

The only reason he's not universally regarded as the best defender of all time is because he missed so many games due to injury.

Never seen someone read the ball like him. Truly grateful to have had the privilege to watch him live as much as I did.

As others have said, he owes the game nothing, and is one of the few players who can put their hand up and say they left it all out there for their club, week in, week out.

Time to crack a few coldies Gov, you've earned them mate.

He is one of the best defenders of the modern era. Right up alongside Scarlett and Rance.

All time.....too hard to say.

True.

What I will say is his 4 year hiatus from the AA squad between 2020-2023 were all injury affected seasons...

I dare say if he didn't have such a rotten run with injuries during that time, he'd have another AA blazer or two in the cupboard.

He's the best I've ever seen. And we've had some tremendous defenders at the club in our time.

He disrupted teams style of play in a very rare way and there was no one I've ever seen better at reading the ball. Only untimely injuries in his last few years stopped him being a 7 or 8 time All Australian.

One of the greats. Hall of Fame worthy career. Always looked a little unfit but played through pain extremely often.

Legend. Go well Gov.
One of the few defenders that forced the opposition to plan around him, to the extent that they would deliberately grubber kicks into their forward line.

Such was his influence.

A sad ending, always had a healthy respect for McGovern as a rival fan.

I recall a derby early on in his career when he was playing as a forward and he was clunking them from everywhere and it was clear he was going to be a serious player.
Posted the following on the Eagles board "Game 2 through to 5 (4 games) of his career he took 18 (4.5 per game) contested marks and kicked 10 goals (2.5 a game). Turned out he was even better as a defender."

Definitely main board worthy.

Was one of the great interceptors of the modern era.
One of the first defenders to have a forward "tag" them too, he was that good in his prime.

A good article about how he turned his career around after he was exiled due to his weight

One of the best defenders ever in his prime.
Funnily enough he won an AA last season and technically as good as he was in his mid 20’s. Unfortunately injuries ruined his late 20’s and 30’s. Since his second season of playing AFL he’s been AA or AA sqaud in each years he’s got to play close to a full season. He copped the unfit tag and etc by cornes etc over the last few years but he’s been a lot leaner those years than he was and was still playing great footy but unfortunately he was still getting injured.

crazy that he was a rookie draft selection.
sad way for it all to end, but it comes to a end for all players.
Man left his mark not only on W.C but the game..

A sad end to what was a really good career. But Jeremy's health and safety must always comes first. 197 games, a club Best & Fairest, 5-time All Australian and 2018 Premiership - so many achievements. One of the best defenders of the modern era.

If there was ever state of origin played in the Rance and McGovern era....those two on the same team in the backline for WA would be a nightmare for any opposition coach.

Well done Gov, great career.
The talks of bringing SOO back is a decade too late. Back then would have been the only time a state would have got close to Victoria. You had two all timers of Gov/ rance in defence and the another two all timers in Buddy and Kennedy up forward.
