crazy that he was a rookie draft selection.
sad way for it all to end, but it comes to a end for all players.
Man left his mark not only on W.C but the game..

Pick 44 in that rookie draft too with our last selection

Bulldogs grabbing 2 premiership players in Dalhaus and Johannisen can be chuffed with their efforts as well.

They are different defenders. Jako couldn't be as effective in a game plan as Gov, but Gov couldn't lock down a monster forward like Jako. Two legends, in different ways.
Gov got goals kicked on him not because he couldn’t lock down gun talls but he always backed in to play his style. Buddy’s kicked goals him but he’s also locked down buddy by doing the team thing.

Funnily enough he won an AA last season and technically as good as he was in his mid 20’s. Unfortunately injuries ruined his late 20’s and 30’s. Since his second season of playing AFL he’s been AA or AA sqaud in each years he’s got to play close to a full season. He copped the unfit tag and etc by cornes etc over the last few years but he’s been a lot leaner those years than he was and was still playing great footy but unfortunately he was still getting injured.
seemingly had a rib/hip issue ever week in the last few years which is unfortunate

Absolutely main board worthy

A lot of us out west saw this coming from a while off after his latest setback. Even before it was always going to a be struggle regardless if it was concussion or otherwise. It’s a shame. The old guard are slowly passing over the collective baton.

Great player. Great bloke. Will be missed. Hopefully stays on for the rest of the year and helps out with the coaching and development side of things.

and yet they'd fit in terrifically together in the same team, throw Jako to FB and it'd be the perfect tall pairing.

Only played 5 seasons of 20 games plus. Was AA 5 times.

But moreso was just good to watch - some of his intercepts were so clean and fluid, really fun player to keep an eye on live at a game. Love the man.

Glad he and the panel are putting health first though, not worth the risk to keep playing.

Lot of good names in that rookie draft. None at McGovern's level but some decent careers.

Jenkins, Curnow, Menegola, JJ, Dahlhaus, Walker, Langford, Simpkin.

I know retirement topics are often a circlejerk on how gold guys are

I firmly believe McGovern was the best big defender Ive seen. That 5 year period before injurys stopped him is better then any other KPD Ive witnessed

Happy to get argued about longevity and why people would say Rance/Glass/Scarlett/Silvagni because they probably played as many games at a peak as McGovern did in his career., but between 2017 and 2019 there wasn't a forward entry into the West Coast defense where that big prick was just reading it better then two dudes practicing between themselves 6 hours a day.

If he was still going strong he would be leading the league in causing his opponent to racking up career abusive Instagram DM's about ruining people's multi's

Great and under rated player

Have McGovern and WC supports gone mental over Melbourne's Melksham ending his career?

Hopefully we'll hear from McGovern's brother.
I’m not sure about anger towards Melksham, I expect he feels pretty bad about it all.

But it’s time for the AFL to review the relaxation of the push in the back rule. It’s got to a point where it’s advantageous to be second to the ball in ruck and marking contests given the latitude given by umpires to push the opponent in the back. And when players get pushed in the back they’re often projected into oncoming traffic and in circumstances where they can’t protect themselves. That just increases concussion risks.

anyone who gets injured by Steven May is a good bloke in my book
