Why play Sonny less in the midfield. He's killing it. Kicking as many goals as when he's played small forward and we get the benefit of 25-30 of his disposals

I have never been a fan of playing Walters as a mid but must now put my hand up and say I was wrong. He has gone up a notch and perhaps that is as a result of being freed up a bit.

I will keep my other opinions to myself until the egg washes off my face.

Are you at peace with RTB declaring this weekend that Mundy will stay back as well? (Assuming you didn't like that much mooted one as well).

They say Hogan is a "confidence player" in relation to his kicks; I don't want to waste $1m-1.5m over 10 years on a player who isn't a natural freak.

You need winners, not confidence players in front of goals.

Hogan is a natural freak that's had to deal with bad development in an underperforming team.

Its an worry, with the figures being thrown around.

Its very hard to unlearn bad habits, I really do wonder if he can have a career like Pav.

Totally agree Hogan is a natural footy freak.I watched him today,he clunked one absolute ripping pack mark and was unlucky not to be awarded another.Unbelievable amount of upside IMO.
Watching him today reminded me so much of Pav. He's totally worth the $$. We need to sell to him the extra upside of getting midfield supply from Fyfie & Bennell.

You just wonder, if , indeed he is coming, how will he handle the media for another year of contract speculation. It will be as obvious as anything if he doesnt sign at the end of the year.

I reckon if we are going to make a pitch for Hogan it'll be this year based purely on the likelihood of us having a very good position in this year's ND.

Yes, no problem with Mundy playing in the back line. He has proven he can play any position from the half back line to the half forward line. He also started his career as a half back so I am happy to play him where he does the most good for the team, even if that is to keep him as a half back to give the young guys a decent go in the midfield. There is also the added benefit of his kicking out of the back line being of a higher quality than what we have been getting so far this year.

I felt Walters didn't do all that much in the midfield in recent seasons when RTB experimented with both he and Ballas in that role and it left us short of goal kickers and as such was a negative for the team. Walters is playing much better as a mid this season but equally important he is still getting goals as well so it's a major positive for the team overall.

Among other things, Hogan mentioned that Melbourne need to perform better as part of his criteria for re-signing. Made sense to me as competitive players hate to lose.

I think it's going to be an interesting decision for Hogan, considering we suddenly fell of a cliff and the demons are do quite ok.

You would hope that the last 7 or so years of Freo's compared to that timeframe at Melb would come into the decision. Roos is only going to coach them for another couple of years aswell isn't he?

Yeah.
It's possible to argue we are on the downswing while they are on the way up.
I suspect that's one of the reasons we avoid saying we are on a rebuild. Some of our key players may reconsider their long term prospect with us if we declare we are going to suck for 3-4 years.

Well there are rebuilds and then there are rebuilds. Take the saints for instance. They had to cut drastically and the 'A grade' core they are rebuilding about is all 29 plus apart from Armitage and Steven (Gilbert, Dempster, Montagna, Reiwoldt. Gilbert being the only one under 32). They are basically relying on only semi proven players like Billings and Bruce to become stars
The core A graders we are going to 'rebuild' around is Fyfe, Hill, Neale and Walters, and our older players who remain A grade (Sandi and Mundy) are just a bonus. Weller and Pearce may end up as stars, but we're not specifically relying on them. I.E. Without relying on too much luck there is no need to languish for 4 years.

If we can't get Hogan what is the alternative plan ?
Firstly, if we don't get Hogan next year we should have a plan to get him to our club when he is a free agent. Clear future salary cap space by de-listing or trading veterans, and utilise the salary cap saving method that the afl allows if you don't use full cap one year. Front loading contracts of star players (Walters, Hill, Fyfe, A.Pearce, Neale and Bennell if he overcomes fitness issues) should also be possible if we don't offer contracts to veteran players in the next two years. Keep Sandy and Mundy, but the rest of players over 28 on our list at the moment should be traded or de-listed.

No matter what happens with Hogan we should do the following things: Keep draft picks and regenerate the list till we have one of the youngest in the afl. Get McCarthy for a player like Sutcliffe rather than a draft pick and develop Tabs and Apeness. Recruit a mid with a likely early pick in the next draft so that playing Fyfe permanently forward becomes a realistic option. Don't offer contract extensions to Mayne and Clarke so we get a compensation pick. Fill a need to get more speed and skill into our defence through free agents like a Neville Jetta type.Have an open mind with late picks in terms of recruiting 20-22 year old key position players currently running around local leagues.

Look at players who could be enticed to Freo by gaining greater opportunity to play regularly currently on afl lists like Obrien or Ceglar at Hawthorn or Tomilson at GWS. We have done this type of recruiting very little in recent years.

If we finish near the bottom of the ladder this year a major play should be made to get Kersten from Geelong or the best uncontracted tall forward via the Preseason Draft.
