Its like some great Disney life lesson .."Cirlce of Life Footy Life" , and as much as it hurts , its the price one must pay to attempt to stay where we now expect Geelong to be. Some solders will fall on their sword , others will have to be told and hopefully if we do it right a couple , the ones who perhaps maintain their best form and best fitness can give us the longevity we all love. Will that be Boris or Jimmy. Ironically Id say GAjr will go well past 300 , grrrr now thats frustrating.

All those years that GAJ was protected in the middle by his Cats teammates- it'll be a real tough thing to watch it help extend his playing years, as opposed to those players who've done it hard from Day 1.

There would be lots of things to keep him going 1) cash 2) flags 3) personal awards. I could easily see him adding another 3 AAs Brownlow and Coleman to his individual tally. And another runners up medal when we thrash the Suns in the 2016 Granny.

All-Australian selections definitely, Brownlow maybe, Coleman beyond him I suspect. People continually underrate how difficult kicking goals actually is.

Disagree with that. He wasn't protected any more than any other player, and he certainly copped more than his share of treatment from opposition players. He just learned how to deal with it better than anyone else.

He's pretty much the same player at Gold Coast he was at Geelong. It became fashionable after 2010 to blame him for all our problems (because fans cannot simply admit that we as a team weren't good enough that year), then after 3 seasons of being as good at Gold Coast it's become fashionable to like him again. He hasn't changed the whole time on the field.

Fair enough- I understood that the older players were very good at looking out for GAJ at stoppages- providing blocks, etc. to free him up a bit. Obviously they can't always do this but I'm sure they did it when they could.

I was surprised that Ablett didn't get the Carji in 2010 - he certainly gave all he had and was in no way to blame for us not going anywhere in 2010. Unless you want to figure in the mental thing about him leaving the club- it certainly didn't seem to affect his performance. Maybe it affected Thompson's coaching, in that he started to prepare for a team without Junior and adjusted his player positions because of it.

Anyway, I've changed the direction of the thread again. Back to Jimmy B and his 250th ;)

I blame that entirely on Thompson. I was there that night. Ablett didn't get a single vote for the Carlton game we lost, when every other person on the planet thought he was clearly best on ground. He lost by 20 votes to Selwood in a format where you could score up to 40 per game (from memory). He was very, very unlucky.

I had those thoughts about Thompson and how he could have been biassed about Ablett but I didn't know the ins and outs of each game, so shut my mouth here on the board (but not at home ;)). It's easy to favour one over another, which is why they have 5? coaches voting but, yes, over a long period of time those single or double votes that aren't given, can easily add up. Not sure if people look back with hindsight on that Carji night and think Bomber may have been harsh when awarding Junior his votes but, at the time, Selwood was an overwhelming people's favourite- possibly because they were almost certain that Ablett was gone and as if Selwood deserved the Carji because he was staying...

Sounding a bit mixed up here but it was a very confusing year for all, I think.

Oh- and Bomber did continually play Ablett out of position (midfield) didn't he? Or is my mind skewed there?

Absolutely true. But that's not the point of the award. It's who was the best player that season, not a popularity contest. Selwood was a worthy winner, but Ablett (to me at least) was better.

Haha- yeah, I know that but I was talking about how nobody protested about Ablett not winning- not the fact that Selwood won because people liked him :) I actually didn't like him at all at that particular point in time - even though it wasn't his fault that he'd won ;)
