Both small bodied midfielders taken at Pick 31 and 36 respectively, a decent poll as opposed to the occasional [Insert High Profile Carlton Player] vs [An opposition dud].

Steven Browne has a better kick but McCarthy's evasive skills are pretty good. Probably being biased here but i reckon Browne has had a better season and looks like a diamond in the rough.

Browne at this stage.

McCarthy's footskills are top-shelf. Save for the Freo match where he seemed to struggle with the wind, he has been a highlight for us since he debuted with his beautiful kicking.

But it's far too early to call, JMac has played about 5 or 6 matches.

He is a bit skinny.....I think:confused: must be close to 190cm or my eyes are buggered
Collingwood supporters sort this out.

Listed as 188 cm and 80 kg on the Collingwood website so pretty good guess ;)

Both look good prospects, too early to call very happy to have McCarthy though.

McCarthy had two years of osteitis pubis before being drafted, so he wasn't playing much football at all. Would probably explain him being quite skinny too.

He should develop into a quicker, skillfull, but less strong version of Scott Burns hopefully.

McCarthy's skills are brilliant. I haven't seen enough of Browne's though, so I can't really judge.

Can't wait till parrot and try hard parrot (general) come in here and spruik Browne as best they can.

His delivery in the forward line is first rate, i've seen him hit fevola's chest on numerous occasions.

Fair enough, I've never really seen him much. I saw him kick a nice goal vs Tasmania in the VFL though (I think it was him anyway).

I was under the impression he was more a small backman though? Was I misinformed?

Yeah he was drafted as a small defender but he mainly played in the midfield after being in the backline in his first couple of games

I shouldn't rate Browne because he can play and can kick well on both feet.

Browne's passes to Fev on both sides of his body were brilliant, so McCarthy must be Buckley to be a better kick. :D

I know Browne is better on his wrong side than Pendlebury.

He was forced to kick on his left against the Tigers and just missed with a snap from 50 that carried the line with ease. A definite bargain since the Blues said in an interview on BigPond that they had Browne rated at 20 last year.

I like Browne because he backs himself in when he nearly took the mark of the year in his first game with his first touch.

That's a crazy leap for a small.

I haven't seen much of McCarthy, but Browne has a good defensive side to his game when he ran down Solomon and had him pinged for holding the ball. We need more players like Browne than McCarthy when we've drafted our fair share of 189 cm mid under Wayne Hughes.

McCarthy might have more upside, but I couldn't be happier with Browne.

Browne has been an awesome draft choice. He was recruited primarily as a small defender, something we lacked. But he has excellent skills, great pace, and a burning desire to be a top-line midfielder. Seems to be a little cut that Masten was assigned the midfield roles ahead of him in WA, and he has a point to prove. Only seen McCarthy play a few games, but seems to be a good draft choice. Good overhead, attacks the ball with intensity, and has good skills. :)

Bit unfair on General there, he's usually a reasonable poster, unlike parrot.

I haven't seen enough of both players to comment, but on the subject of Carlton I do like Armfield. Looks a player :thumbsu: .

I have many question marks over Armfield who was another Rugby convert i believe. He has great pace and intensity but his decision making and disposal let's him down occasionally. Being a late draftee, i hope he rectifies his deficiencies soon. His debut was very impressive though, i think he was the best Carlton player against Geelong.

Pendlebury is actually average on his wrong side. He's a pretty one sided player imo.

Danny Stanley, Alan Didak and Brad Dick are the only truly two sided players at Collingwood I can think of off the top of my head.

Too early to really tell at this stage but the fact that both played a large number of games at this early stage of their career's bodes well for both.

Browne is a very good kid and we'd be ecstatic with his progress this year and we will be hoping to see another big step up next year.

Who knows, Mark Robinson might turn out to be right when he called Browne the next Gavin Wanganeen.
