With all this recent discussion about our new big emerging midfielders in Sidey,Beams and the boot, i was wondering at what stage people thought McCarthy's career is at.
Looked like being anything 12 months ago, however doesn't seem to get consistent matches at the top level to progress further.
Little unsure where is best position is also?
Thoughts?

He's rated very, very highly internally. He only needs one good game in the VFL before Mick hauls him in for an AFL game. To be honest I havn't thought he's been that impressive, but he's a good depth player. Wouldn't mind him coming in if Sidebottom or Beams get injured, god forbid.

He'll be right.

He'll get the necessary opportunities to show what he can do because as Zahki says, he is rated hugely internally. I think he can play, so I'm looking forward to him eventually cementing himself in the 22. He's had a woeful run with injury though, so getting consistent games at any level will do him a world of good.

He's my bandwagon boy. I have alot of faith that he'll be a very good player.

Has very similar atributes to Wellers in that he can play inside and outside, has good disposal, tough, very competitive, solid mark, good tackler and is very quick. Just needs some game time and confidence to adjust to AFL level. Oh...and he needs to nail the gimme goals when they come his way like Wellers.

He has been cruelled by injuries abit and after being drafted in 2007, this is his 1st full pre-season. I expect to see him in the best 22 by years end, but don't ask me who he comes in for.

While we are travelling well might just be a chance to get a consistent run of games, form & match fitness in the VFL. It feels like he comes back from injury, plays a blinder, gets promoted for 1-2 games then gets injured. Repeat above.

Thats an exageration i know but next time he comes up i'd like him to be 100% fit coming of at least 2-3 good games in a row. Can then leave him in for a few games and get a real good look at him.

I must admit I've never been wowed by him. I've seen him kick 4 goals , have 30 odd touches etc at VFL level but have still walked away with a quibble about his game.

I think for me it's his decision making that probably leaves me most unconvinced. For a player with such a long raking kick , I find when he gets the ball around the ground he is too backward and sideways looking with his first intention and looks a little panicked. I just would like to see him take the game on a bit more .

Having said that he is a good judge of a mark , goes in quite hard , has reasonable pace and is great long kick/snap for goal.

McCarthy is a little under my radar. When he is in the 1s, I haven't really noticed him. Haven't ever felt he's been in the best players list. Have I missed something?

What sort of injuries has he had?

I just call him Shazza.

Shazz or sherrif for me too

I really like jmac, is a big boy very fast and hard at it. Hamstrung injuries hurt him last year and I don't mind the idea if him being forced to compile a month of very good footy in the seconds before promotion.

Will be given every chance

Back pocket might be worth a try. Is pretty hard, and has decent skills. Is not the champion most think he is, a position like this might be a good starting point. As he is heading the same way as Julian Rowe etc atm

if anything i think he's a little SOFT. and i believe its in the mind.. he seems a bit of a (goody 2 shoes) personality wise.. a really nice fellow.. needs a bit of mung in him like beams and he bit of confidence like beams!

why do people call wellingham "the boot"? Isn't it wellington boots?

Rhyming slang..."Wellington Boot" is rhyming slang for root.

Used in the context:
"She's a goer and I'd give her a Wellington Boot!"

Nothing to do with gum boots..:D:D:D

J-mac is the second coming of danny Stanley, good vfl players but that's about it

Couldnt disagree more , one thing the boy does not lack is hardness, you might be confusing it with confidence.

Yep dead right and his recovery from big hits is also very impressive, he has an ability to take a hit and bounce back up before the person who hits him. Preseason a couple of years ago down at Albany (WA) he went in hard to a certain head-on collision with Embley, didn't shirk and the body thud could be neard from the sidelines, he bounced straight up while Embley was still trying to figure out what happenned. Jmac then pounced on the loose ball took one bounce and hiy Cam Wood lace out.

i didn't notice him much last night at the game. although it's hard sometimes to see those possessions in the packs when your watching in the crowd. i think he'll be fine he seems to be a confidence player so if he had a great afl game then i think that would set him off to have a good afl career.

Disappointing that he is on the injury list again with those troublesome hammys.

We really need to get them right because he is just as capable as breaking out like Rusty/Beams/Wellingham.
