I have no expectation that sweet will become some high end, or even very good ruck.

In all likelihood he will be Darcy fort / Andrew Phillips

And considering the alternatives, that’s fine.

Minson? Surely not 2013 All Australian Ruckman Will Minson?

But no i agree, he'll be probably on next to nothing, and we'll probably give away pick 60 for him. So it's a moneyball kind of move.
No. PAFC AFL start Hugh Minson.

And FWIW the all Australian isn't what people remember Will for.

1. Rockets spray
2. Sledging sick kids
3. Daylight
4. AA honours

If Sweet is able to drop back and help in defence it would make a massive difference.
What we need is a Brogan/Lade combination
We've been crying out for a ruckman to drop in the hole and take a relieving mark for years.

His brother Hugh who appeared on our list only briefly from 2006 and did not play an AFL game for us. Hugh developed a serious knee issue and gave footy away at an early age.

The Swannies on the D and T board weren't very complimentary of Ladhams at all.

Doesn't sound like he has been performing on or off field.

He would’ve been offered the same work/life balance as Grundy. Doesn’t work for everyone. Some players need some of their coaches to be a bit of a campaigner. It’s kind of why I like ChadBro as a coach.

I can't say for sure but his possession numbers and tackling numbers are pretty good.

If it is Jordan Sweet you are posting about I am sorry to disappoint you. Jordan averages 8.2 disposals per game compared to Sam Hayes' 8.1 in the same number of AFL games. On the other hand Peter Ladhams, who we traded, averages 14.2 disposals per
game. Jordan Sweet averages 21.4 hit outs per game while Hayes has 25.4 hit outs per game. Of course that does not mean that Jordan isn't a better prospect than Sam but the similarity in their stats is uncanny and on that basis I am hesitant to paint Jordan Sweet as something he is not.

As if he turns down another year on 400-500k. You’re a long time retired
No one is offering him that. Norf are getting rid of Goldy, I doubt they’ll go for another old bit slightly shitter ruck than the one they are getting rid of.

I actually don't want Jordan to be getting big possession numbers. I'd rather he focus on getting the HOs to Rozee, Butters, JHF whose disposal will be significantly more damaging than any ruckman could hope for.

My three big criteria for a ruck are:
1. competitive in HOs (i.e. not concede complete domination that forces us to change our setup around the ball),
2. set up to take marks behind the play, and
3. apply defensive pressure/tackling at stoppages to allow our mids some extra space to get on the run.

Sweet can definitely meet 1 and 3, and I'm hoping he can adjust to our gameplan well enough to meet the 2nd criteria too.

Compare the pair;

Jordon Sweet
drafted #23 2018 Rookie Draft, dob 2/2/1998, drafted as a 20 year old, 206cm, 106kgs played 11 games in 5 seasons. and 0 in 2023.

Sam Hayes
drafted #47 2017 NATIONAL Draft, dob 9/6/99 drafted as an 18 year old, 205cms, 102kgs played 11 games in 6 seasons, and 4 in 2023.

I don't know if Sweet lost 12 months with an ACL injury like Sam, but why are we replacing Sam with someone who is no better than Sam?

Or are we stockpiling ruckmen?? That's not our MO.

Sam Hayes hasn't been denied games due to the incumbent being the AA ruck.

Fully agree with TeeKray's earlier point that this doesn't guarantee he is a quality player - but comparing their quality based only on games played is ignoring too many other variables.

I could likewise point out how Sweet has dominated his state league this year while Hayes hasn't, but I acknowledge Hayes also hasn't been used as the primary ruck all year like Sweet has.

Id love for someone to compare Sweets stats this year in the VFL to Hayes' stats in his BnF year in the SANFL.

Especially for possessions and marks.

2021 (averages are rounded numbers couldn’t find it in actual decimals)
Hayes: 17 games, 1 goal, averaging 14 disposals, 34 hitouts, 5 marks, 3 inside 50s, 1 tackles, 86 dream team points

Sweet 2023: 19 games, 9 goals, 13.8 disposals, 43.2 hit outs, 2.2 marks, 5.3 tackles, 104.3 dream team points

Legend thanks. I didn't know where to get the SANFL stats.

The marks worries me but the tackles will please Ken.

I don’t know about you but that Jordan Peterson has some good ideas…

There’s a large age difference between the two players at the years you’re comparing them.

At a guess something like 21-24.

Would be better to find sweets season in 2020 or 2021.

Fitness

Sweet has been stuck behind English and ripping up the VFL.

Hayes has often been behind literally nobody and still not gotten picked. He hasnt even played first ruck in SNAFL lately.

In a different world with competent coaches Hayes has 50 games and has a tank by now. But we dont live in that world.

we know that had nothing to don with Hayes and everything to do with the moron in charge.

He wavered from picking finlayson, Hayes, then teakle, then Dante, and then Hayes again all the whole picking a completely cooked and disabled lycett anytime lycett managed to stand up straight.

Ken clearly had no idea what he was doing with the ruck situation and made it up as he went along and as a result clearly ****ed over our team and Hayes development.

We all know, without any doubt that he would not have played and developed sweet if we had of drafted him.

But what is done is done. We’re going to move on from Hayes, and sweet is better than nothing.

I just did what was asked, it’s not a statement that sweet is better

To your last point though, why? They are both 24 and 25, why not just compare this year

The comparison was made between them at different ages, when sweet was much older than hayes, I simply pointed that out.

As for using one this year i never said you couldn’t, but the fact Hayes barely played ruck as we balanced playing 3 rucks in the magpies makes it a pointless exercise.

All the Dogs fans are saying marking is a big weakness, which is a huge shame. We really need a ruck that can start clunking them or at least heavily contesting around the ground.

Feels very much like for like with Lycett. No noticeable improvement in the team, just a younger version of the same player.

The comparison was asked because it’s each players best year of league football.

Unfortunately when Hayes was given (his limited) opportunities he never stood up, has never dominated a game in the AFL, this year he has had 4 chances to make a statement.

Very limited player, no tank. Good/average SANFL player is his limit. Will probs go to a VFL club next year and contribute fine
