Kade Simpson v Brent Stanton

Why would anyone be surprised that the guy who got the most kicks turned it over the most?

The "despite" bit is illogical. The more you have of it, the more you're likely to turn it over. That's basic.

Swan lead Pies turnovers; Ablett GC; Mitchell Hawks; Fyfe Freo; NDS Saints; etc etc etc.
All hacks...
right?

There out put has been fairly similar over the last few years.

In cases like this I tend to switch the players between teams and consider how they would go. I would therefore give my vote to Stanton, he has often been 1st or 2nd tagged compared to Simpsons 4th. Simpson may well flourish with more pressure on him but until then Stanton has the nod.

He does not get tagged. Bomber supporters think that when a player like Wellingham stands next to him at the start of a game that Stanton is being tagged. He is just easily expolited for having no defensive side to his game. Runs one way and around most contests.

That Stanton does not get tagged is incorrect, bag supercoach and dreamteam as much as you like but one thing it does tell you is games in which your players get picked up by opposition taggers and the enormous detriment that occurs.

He was the main tagged until Watson's emergence and has been second in line ever since and from the amount of games Watson misses I would bet Stanton can still compare tagged games with him in the last two years.

Did Wells tag him? I thought they went head to head and he ended up getting his pants pulled down.

Different type of players Stanton more an inside player, Simpson more a running, attacking wingman. Both have a ton of quality and Stanton af Carlton would kill it. Teams would be trying to tag Murphy, Judd, Simpson and Gibbs next year and Stanton would be free to do as he wishes.

Thats what happens when you have elite midfield, but unfortunately for Stanton he is stuck in a team with not much quality.

Irrespective of Stanton, this thread shows how underrated Simpson is, and how uniformed opposition supporters are of his importance to the team.

He is our vice captain for a reason and it's an insult to describe him as an outside runner. Plays with as much heart and courage as any player in the competition, and is at his best when the rest of the team is struggling.

One of the most highly respected player by the football club and its supporters. Can't say the same of Stanton, who has more than his fair share of detractors.

Still noone from the Dons side of the fence can say why he was boo'd this year. From zero to hero in a couple of months?

I am amazed this poll is close, would like to see the numbers from a non Carl/Ess perspective.

The supporters who boo'd Stanton are a disgrace to the footy club.
I would never boo an essendon player under any circumstance

Simpson has never been booed by Carlton fans. Can't say the same of Stanton. Not sure if that is a reflection of Essendon fans or Stanton himself.

And would Essendon posters please learn what tagging means. Stanton doesn't get tagged.

Dont care if people choose Simpson over Stanton but this I will fight for, Stanton gets tagged. Here is small sample size of games around when Watson was injured in the middle of the season.

Round 13 2011, North Melbourne
Greenwood to Stanton, 20 possessions to 25 of Brents. Watson played and got 29 on Ziebell.

Round 14 2011, Hawthorn
No tags, This is the game Watson got injured early.

Round 15 2011, Geelong
Ling went to Stanton 21 touches to Brents 27, Ling tags people he does not go head to head.

Round 16 2011, Richmond
Jackson to Stanton, second heavy tag in a row, Stanton belted him and was BOG 27 poss to 15.

Round 17 2011, Adelaide
Doughty to Stanton, third heavy tag, 24 Stant touches to 21 for Doughty.

Round 18 2011, Carlton
No tags.

Round 19 2011, Collingwood
Watson returns no tags.

For the rest of the year Watson absorbed Selwood and the few other more impressive defensive jobs but Stanton had a target placed on him a couple of times before the end, nothing that will impress for the purpose of my post though. I also didnt check before Watson's injury as Stanton was poor and Watson dominated.

Quibble if you like about the definition of tagging, but Greenwood, Ling, Jackson and Doughty are known taggers and are players Simpson only sees from a distance attached to his mates Judd and Murphy.

If you go back further the main tag used to move more fairly between Stanton and Watson, in 2010 using Geelong as an example, they played twice Brent and Jobe playing in both, Ling took Jobe in round 1 then Brent in round 12.

By all means vote Simpson but give Stanton his due, he deserves better then what the clueless amongst his fans give him.

Thats obvious I never said wells tagged him but you said he had a terrible game when they went head to head which he didnt

Wells pulled his pants down as did Wellingham. I said he does not get tagged so if these 2 did not tag him who did in the other 20 matches? Opposition wannt him to have the ball so they let him run free.

Kade plays different to stanton anyway. He's a wingman, who pushes the ball inside 50. I see stanton as just a ball winner around the ground in stoppages. Simpson is a very vital cog in our team and wouldn't trade him for Stanton, but thats not to say stanton is average. Brett is always the first to be put down after a bomber loss, but usually he has absolute barry Crockers when they lose. His best and worse is so far apart, especially in comparison to Simmo.

Final verdict: Simpson :D

Simpson for me, pretty good player actually, i don't rate Stanton overly highly but he is one of the Bombers best mids so he'd get more attention, not a great deal in it.

Lol
Get your stats right stanton had about 3 or 4 bad games for the year and that was while he was playing injured
Hes one of our most consistent performers

Simpson is easily up there as one of the most gutsy players on Carltons list, think he would be in most teams best 22.
