Yes, but Cornes and Kirk were the premier taggers at that stage. Ling only became elite at that role in 2006 onwards. I was more questioning that you thought a single player had changed the role from a defensive tagger to an offensive tagger. Every role in the game has become possession and attacking based. Even the best defenders are the ones who rebound from 50.

This is incredibly inaccurate. Ling was given the knick-name "Ling the Cling" by the Melbourne media in 2001, after he dominated Buckley in a Gee V Coll game at the MCG. He was playing a tagging role full time by 2003.

And as my first posts inferred and my second made clear, i see Ling prominent among a group of players who have adapted and changed the the role of tagging. But yes, you are right, the offensive dimensions they have brought to the role do mirror wider changes in the game at large.

FWIW i see Kirk play regularly and actually place him above Cornes but below Ling on this particular pecking order.

bid deal even i could be a half decent tagger in the Geelong midfield. Kane would be a mile ahead in 2004, when we were flag contenders. Its always easy to tag in good teams Tyson Stenglein/Robert Shirley/Clinton Jones ring a bell???

I'm sure you could.

Cornes is very good player, but hasn't had the consistency Ling has had IMO. And if we are talking in the context of the contemporary tagging role, which is really the point of the thread, then i think Ling wins.

I like Ling and I think he is a very good player however in regards of consistency Kornes has been a very good tagger for a good 5-6 years. However I think it is difficult comparing taggers when one plays is in arguably the best side in the last decade and the other plays in a mediocre team who will struggle to make the 8. Geelong have like twice as many possesions than the other team, which makes it difficult for the other teams players to get the ball. Hence making Lings job very much easier

2007 grand final ring a ling a bell

A sign that you have 0 knowledge of Cameron Ling's career and are just trying to voice a baseless opinion.
2006 was Ling's worst year as a footballer. Geelong fans had him out of their best 22s for the start of the 2007 season because Thompson started using him as more of a play maker than tagger and he was found wanting. It would've been his best year statistically as he had more possessions than ever before, but he was letting his opponents beat him frequently.
Ling was one of our best players from 2002-2005. Think he won our b&f once and runner up twice.

Im not weighing in on the Cornes vs Ling debate as i really dont think theres much between them, just pointing out a misconception

A fair point sdsdsdsd. But keep in mind that Ling was assigned every teams number 1 midfielder, and regularly toweled them up, in the years before Geelong became such a dominant side. Geelongs dominance did not start until well into Ling's career.

2007 grand final ring a ling a bell

I dont get how that effects the topic. Everyone knew that Geelong was miles ahead of any other team that year.
OK if u like grand finals take the two games Geelong lost last and were u didnt get much of the ball. See how Ling went. What was it umm Dane Swan 30+ touches??? and 2008 GF Sam Mitchell 2nd half???? Proves my point good team = good taggers

And the arguement that Ling has been good before Geelong got good is not sufficient either. You say that Ling has 1 bf?? im not too sure but Kornes has won it twice i think and has had top 5 finish for 5-6 years. That said he would be close to leading the race this year as well. Then again its not as if Geelong were horrible 04-05, wat u made it to the semis twice???

Unlike a lot of people, I think Cornes is a very good player. Sure he wasn't too bright against the Dogs but he never gives up and keeps on trying. I'd say he's on par with Ling as a footballer and tagger but I'd take Kornes for his effort and the fact that he won't scare membership sales away with his face.

Oh ok. Just go over the top why dont you. I think I can safely say 2006 was better than 2000 and 2001. You'd know before me, but I remember him playing well in the 2nd half of 2006 and then translating his form into your premiership year. He finished 4th in the B&F that year, so I don't know what your complaining about. Yes, he was one of the Cats best players form 2002 to now, but because he wasn't in a successful team I suppose I have all rated Cornes and Kirk higher than him over that period. From 2007 he became the no.1 tagger.
I don't even know what I'm arguing. In my first post I said I would pick Ling over Cornes.

Yes we know Ling plays in a flag side, but Kornes has had his great moments also.

Kornes hasn't shut down an opponent this year, I would honestly take Aaron Joseph over him purely as a tagger. Kane gets a lot of the ball but a lot of it is hospital handballs which puts his team under more pressure, he has fallen away greatly in the last season or to, if a new coach comes to Port then I think Kane's days might be numbered.

He killed Leon Davis against the Pies. I know, because I was only watching particular players for that match for Dream Team purposes and I noticed Kornes was wearing Davis like a glove and did a bloody good job!
