Who out of these two would you rather have at number 3 for us? To be honest I was at a loss as to why Khawaja was dropped so soon. I think he has the temperament to be a very good batsman for us for a long time. His sustained first class record shows that he isn't one of these one season wonder types who snare a baggy green on the back of five or six good state performances.

Marsh played well in his first test, but since he has been ordinary. He has plenty of promise but where is the application?

I reckon both could also be capable openers, but we could well have that settled now.

Anyway, the poll is there. If you select 'Other', please nominate a player.

Discuss.

I like Marsh, when he is scoring runs he looks a very good player but I guess his first class stats don't lie. 7 centuries in 60 first class matches isn't good enough for a test match first drop is it. I think Khawaja will be a better player long term but am happy to see Marsh play out the series.

Watson won't play in Adelaide. No point he hasn't played cricket in 2 months.

This sums up my thoughts. Marsh is certainly an above average Shield player. Khawaja just looks to me like he could bat all day, much the same as Dravid.

I voted Khawaja, but in the short term its

Cowan retained
Marsh dropped
Watson in for Marsh and to bat at #3

Marsh at 28 just doesn't do enough, makes a blazing 100 or nothing. Zero ability to graft an innings of a fighting 60-70 when things aren't going his way, which you at least need to do occasionally. Instead he makes 10.

Marsh has been an ordinary shield batsman for many years. Can't comprehend how he was ever in the mix for the number 3 spot. Shows how much our standards had dropped that someone averaging in the 30's over a reasonably lengthy career was considered for the prime batting spot. Give Khawarja an extended run at the number 3 spot.

No room for either when Watson is fit.

I admire the way Mickey Arthur stands by struggling players but Marsh has to go. Just seems to lack mental strength.

Watson > Marsh > Khawaja.

Hope Marsh gets another chance in Adelaide, I feel he'll finally come through and shun all the nonbelievers.

Khawaja by a mile.

Marsh and Warner (and Hughes for that ,matter) are big upper order liabilities with poor defensive technique who will get consistently found out by good bowlers on hostile pitches.

Watson/Cowan/Khawaja is a very promising top three, I feel. I still worry about Watson's footwork, and feel he,d be best suited to the middle order, but I think that is a good combination to develop with a view to the Ashes tour.

Yes. Right now I prefer Marsh over Khawaja. Unlike most, I'm patient and prepared to wait more than a couple of test matches for somebody to produce.

Marsh will be given another go in Adelaide, perhaps then if he still is unable to make runs, then we can look to replacing him.
