Nailed the first 14 last year from memory. Not in the order they ended up going, but the first 14 taken were the first 14 KM had in his mock.

Kennedy is a taller, stronger marking presence forward of centre so I don't see that same upside.

Lonergan plays more of a Judd style footy with his powerful inside game with not only that hard inside ball winning game but then also that really explosive pace for an inside player but with probably with more of a defensive style to his game where he plays a more accountable brand and doesn't free wheel, and play that same purely offensive style game as Judd does. Neither belong in the same conversation for talent, Lonergan doesn't project as that same level dominant player but can do some similar things to the champ which I'm sure will have plenty of clubs mid-late 1st round licking their lips.

But you are right on the powerful inside game. Lonergan is very much that strong inside midfielder clubs are increasingly craving.

Have you seen his tackle numbers? Or his defensive acts?

I agree he's definitely more offensively minded but he chases.

It's more Judd is a one way runner which is in no way a denigration of his game but rather how he goes about his play. Go for the ball first, think about his direct opponent second.

Swan is the same. Scott Thompson is the same. All mentioned are very strong tacklers and accumulate very good tackle numbers and as one way runners they can impact games like few others but then can concede some meaningful touches the other way at times if going head to head with a non-tagger.

You are right, he always wears that helmet. Most likely he gets overlooked. Very slight in build and some better performed players. Ben is more a rookie chance if selected but if a club thinks they can add size to his frame then maybe he gets a look.

If you're a Rioli fan Willy is one to watch out for next year and looks a strong chance with a good year to feature in the draft next year. Looks like a beauty.

I wouldn't be taking either Mayes or Wood at those respective selections myself if selecting but that said they've both been very heavily linked to Brisbane at those specific selections and for that reason I've got them in at those selections. It seems Brisbane and other teams view them more as a midfielder and key position player respectively as opposed to a leadup forward and a high half forward I view them more as.

Will be interesting to hear over coming days whether different players are more heavily linked to those selections.

Went to school with willy Rioli until he moved to boarding school.
The under 18's (nationals) game i saw in Darwin Ben Rioli was one of the standouts and was one of the main reasons NT beat Vic Metro. Great agility and not a bad kick.
even with his slight frame, he is still pretty tough and i've seen him break packs before.

Always love reading opinions on the new players to enter the AFL system and you know your stuff. It's not an exact science and odds are you won't get it right but kudos to you for putting your thoughts out in the open for scrutiny and analysis.

Callum Twomey today released his mock draft on the AFL website and I read with interest that Carlton is seriously considering selecting Jason Ashby at our second round pick, number 36. From what I can glean from your initial assessment of him, he's a medium defender who is an impressive runner with a good work ethic meaning he's comfortable playing both loose and close-checking. Not afraid to go in for the hard ball either, and a nice mark of the ball. You note his skills as his weakness - how poor are they? Are they a real weakness, or are they just not a particular strength? Also, do you believe he'd be capable of contributing through the midfield at AFL level given his running ability?

Any further information that you could share on him would be appreciated. Apologies if you've already covered him in greater detail, I confess that I haven't gone through all 90 pages of this thread - so if you have, I'd love a link.

I reckon that's a definite possibility at this point. If he's there, despite whatever problems he might have, I say we have to take him.

He doesn't meet B-Mac's "quality person" mantra.

I could see Ashby going second round. He has been compared to Nick Smith as that player who can play a good tight checking role down back and play it well. I'm not sold on his footskills but as Toovey has for Collingwood it should be ironed out and I think he'll work on it until it is. By foot he doesn't have the hurt factor of other back flankers but also lacks consistency and misses targets more often than you'd like. The talk is the work ethic is there and very coachable so it might not be such a bad selection. Looks like a solid mid draft option in any case and when you find a guy in that region who you know can play, you take him because at that stage there are few guarantees.

I wouldn't bet on him developing into a midfielder at AFL level, his endurance is very good but you have to be really elite to make that transition and he doesn't have that inside ball winning capabilities or the skills to really be suited to a midfield role. He looks more like a backline roleplayer for mine who can at time provide run and carry which is fine and mid draft the type you are looking for because he can do what the team requires without fuss.

haha. It's kind of what I do anyway. If Lonergan goes at 9 and Thurlow at 32, I am buying a Richmond membership and changing my name to "Thurlow2Lonergan2Reiwoldt".
