Draft Watcher Knightmare's 2014 Phantom Draft

I would have thought Mitch Norton from the Jets would be the best small forward in the TAC, top 3 in the goal-kicking mid season last year as a bottom age before needing a shoulder reconstruction. Just back in the last 3 weeks, 2 goals against the Cannons on the weekend despite only playing a half on the forward line. Would still back him to kick 40 goals this year, even though he will spend most of his time as an on-baller.

I'd still take Jake Johnson but Norton is among the better forwards in the TAC. Will be interesting to see how he goes this season.

Hey KM what do you think of young Harry Dear which could be picked up by hawks as father son Paul Dear's son. Where would you place I'm at the moment could he improve a lot this year.

If Dear played in the TAC last year I didn't notice but he showed some signs last week to suggest he's worth watching. I'll have a better guage on him later in the season.

Knightmare, what do you think of the draft talent out of Ballarat Rebels this year?
I know they played alot of their kids as bottom age players last year, I imagine that will help them this year.

Josh Webster showed some signs last year and is on my watch list along with Daniel Butler and Xavier Vearing.

What kind of player do you really see the Bulldogs prioritising with their first pick and who is it likely to be given we are likely to have a pick in the 3-7 range?

I imagine the dogs will go for a tall.

Wright/McCartin/Durdin/Goddard I imagine will be on the top of the shopping list. There are always sliders and Goddard is someone I see as more a mid 1st round selection so maybe he's the guy available assuming a mid table finish.

After seeing the Demons issues with their talls at the moment I can see why the list managers say you can't have enough if they are quality. So I do not think the Demons will have any qualms drafting a tall if he is best available at their pick which will likely be 1 - 3 this season.
GWS will be sniffing around those early picks again (and probably 2015 as well) given the amount of talent they have in the Bank. Also it gives them a chance to spread their age profile out with 'the best' talent available to prolong any stay at the top they may enjoy later on.

Mitch Clark may request a trade back to WA at seasons end (not that I know his circumstance) and Frawley's future isn't certain so it's possible Melbourne go for another tall if one presents as the clear best available. Particularly if Melbourne have more than one active first round selection it's certainly possible.

GWS may be shopping some of those speedy types selected early draft these past seasons who don't project as best 22 players - Will Hoskin-Elliott and Liam Sumner are guys I can see them putting on the trade table so for a club like Melbourne needing that injection of pace there could be some opportunity to go after these types and allow GWS that desirable age spread of early draft talent.

So Melbourne again have some real possibilities whether it's retaining picks or trading them away but to me I'd be looking to firm up the midfield and back half further before persuing a tall with the talls this year while among the better draft prospects all having their various questions.

Haven't seen him play. I'd assume he's another few years away. There may be some Carlton supporters more aware of where he's at and when he's eligable.

Depends on eventual ladder position. It's unclear whether Carlton finish 14th or 8th at this point. Perhaps a Melbourne or GWS move on their top pick and Carlton may be able to put together an attractive package to get a Wright or McCartin.

Otherwise Hugh Goddard if he slides perhaps, maybe a Watchman in the second round if he has a strong season.

It's a good year to be in the market for a key forward so Carlton, Western Bulldogs among others may have that opportunity to find a key forward to build around.

Footage is hard publically to get your hands on. I'm certainly not so lucky.

Can kick off both feet, has silky skills makes good decisions and goes most of the day. Has figured in Douttas B & F for those last 4 years too. He's a gun IMO.

1) Still not a lot to him which isn't unusual at 16 and he's about 183.
2) Not as fast as a couple of others from his club, but can move.
3) No doubt at all he's in the Pendlebury mold.

McKenzie is a big, big bodied forward and he used it well last week.

I don't believe he featured last year, or if he did I'm not aware of it so one game is a small sample size isn't enough to project a draft range but if he continues to improve he is one to keep an eye out for as someone who is eligible this year.

Nightmare WA should be good this year, the quality of wafl colts for last two weeks has been of higher quality than last
year.

I had Brisbane bottom 4 but I'm not so certain now. Somewhere bottom 8 but it's unknown where.

A quality KPP if available is what I see Brisbane favouring.

A more productive solution I feel instead while it hasn't been spoken about is to give Melbourne a slightly enlarged salary cap for a short number of years so as to attract opposition players and get that injection of experience to become more competitive both through free agency and trade.

Early picks while they can help a little don't do enough with quality veteran experience needed for the youth to take that next step which is more what Melbourne need at this point as a club who have tried and failed to build through the draft.

Not from me. I said if you win less than 5 games this year then I'm fine with it. I was opposed to it last year when you already had Hogan coming in.
