Hey KM,

Cox’s prelim was awesome, as Brisbane could potentially have a pick around the time he is taken do u see max king being able to produce sometime to that level in the air?

Cox is good when he's up and about isn't he? Not really someone you can defend all that easily if the kicks into him are where he wants it.

Max King is the equivalent in the TAC Cup/U18s to what Cox was dishing up last night. Just too tall and long.

The same was said of Patton and Boyd in their draft years. Though they've both substantially underachieved.

It shows there is a place for quality height up forward.

Hey KM, with how great how entire team has looked recently, what do you see as a need from this draft? For me it's still KPD.

Do you see someone like Ben King possibly sliding to a late 1st round pick? Or do you see us packaging our 1st rounder up the ladder to possible grab Ben?

Anyone know if there are streams going of the SANFL finals or the SA U17 Futures match tomorrow? Will it be on the SANFL YouTube or somewhere else?

Obviously keen to tune into all the matches.

Someone here mentioned on one of the boards he had access to a YouTube link for the sa futures. Check the 2019 prospects thread or one of the other threads on this board it was far back and ask them (I can’t remember who it was)

Collingwood are expected to draft Kelly as a father son to fill that long term key defence need. I'm nonplussed by Kelly, though I don't love any of the other key defence prospects this year who will be available when Collingwood enter the draft. Give me a choice and I'd take Sam Collins as a mature ager in the third round if there.

They're also going to explore options during the trade/free agency period. Collingwood have made it clear they want Steven May. The price I'm hearing is completely overs so again my view is Collingwood should go a different route and add Alex Johnson as a rookie who won't be round one ready, but late season could be ready to impact games.

Ben King is expected to go top 10. He's the only premium key defender this year. And he's high quality. He's not falling to Collingwood, but at the same time, he's not one I'd spend to move up to.

Haven't had any success finding anything.

Looks like all the SANFL Finals can just be found on the channel 7 website which is handy. Seems like the Grand Final will also be there. Probably goes up 24 hours later is my best guess.

Will be interesting if anyone finds anything on the SANFL U17 Futures match. That will be the really interesting match. More good SA talent coming through next year also.

Hey Knightmare, do you see any bargain key defenders that are great 1v1 around our 2nd pick?

No bargains. No.

Sam Collins I like as a mature ager, but he's more an intercepter than a 1v1 freak.

Collingwood are expected to look at Will Kelly as that solution with either the clubs second or third pick. I wouldn't say he's all that impressive 1v1.

After Collingwood's first choice, they may be locked out of the draft until the rookie draft with Quaynor/Kelly/Atu probably nominated.

Knightmare, have you watched much of Jordan Clark from WA?
A couple posters over this way who've seen him a bit think he has what it takes to be a top-line wingman, including speed, foot skills, reading of the play.
If you've seen enough of him for a bit of an idea, would you be aligned with this thinking?
Obviously not in your top 20 so I'm thinking maybe not......

Just a few questions
How much weight do you place on the combine results?
Which of the test results would you look at in more detail?

What position did Andy McGrath play in his u18 year? With his first year predominantly in defence and his move into the mids this year will he end up being an balanced mid or predominantly outside? Just seeing if you think that is a good development path for players as in a way they are playing out of position or is it good to learn the game and if it is only elite players as able to do that?

Also on that draft what were your thoughts on Taranto and what you see him projecting to become?

Thanks and hope you get good seats for the GF

Absolutely does have that scope, and is even shaping up as WA's first selection with Hill falling out of favour.

Clark isn't in my top 20, but he's in my 25 in my power rankings. He has gone very well in the WAFL which has increased his stocks over the second half of the season. I see him going late first round.

Stack I consider WA's best prospect. I'm also a Cameron fan. Clark is right there with Cameron in my power rankings.

I place zero weight on combine results. Clubs already know how these prospects test, so it's more the interviews they learn from. And they can track any improvements since previous testing.

It's interesting in so much as it gives context to what we see on the field. But that's the only value I see from a results standpoint.

With the testing. You can test super well in speed testing but if you can't apply it in game, it's of no practical value - see Joel Wilkinson. You might be able to leap like crazy, but again if you can't use it in game, it's of no practical value - think small/medium sizers who can't take a grab. Skill tests don't simulate in game pressure. The endurance testing some may see as more interesting, but even that doesn't simulate in game running, with in game GPS data of more practical usefulness - data clubs have access to.

McGrath played a lot back and also played through the mids in juniors. He was played in both positions because his run was probably his best attribute but then he could go through the mids and rack it up in a big way. So his usage in both positions was appropriate.

Taranto based on his junior player I'm surprised GWS aren't using more forward. He has the scope to split his minutes between mid/fwd and impact in both positions. I'd look at Robbie Gray as someone he has the scope to develop into something like.

A perfectly summarised answer as per usual great man. I only meant to highlight how stats can be misleading but you are right that if you have a large enough sample size they can be helpful. I assume that you like I are far more likely to rely on what you have seen though when possible.

Also interested in you take on Luko's reduced performance in the second half of this year. I scout in SA and have followed him a lot particularly last year. I also think he is a generational talent with the only question mark his competitiveness. He looks spent and I give him a pass in that sense but what do you think of his drop off in the last few months and is his lack of competitiveness a concern for you. If you compare him to Riewoldt Nick was renowned for his relentless desire.
As a tall lanky bloke you don't develop the skill level he has unless there is a serious desire to be the best imo. He's more machine than freak show. Imo much more likely he ran out of gas + isn't yet physically at the level of being able consistently compete with and beat smart adult key defenders, in particular in terms of body strength.

It's a stretch to call him a generational talent however he's as close to a sure thing of playing 200+ quality games as anyone over 195cm can get imo. If Carlton pass on him at no 1 then they're on drugs.

there is a sanfl digital pass set up where you can watch all the matches for something like a couple of dollars a month. You should be able to watch replays if you sign up for that. pretty good value imo although not sure if futures match was broadcast

In term of the seniors Woodcock was one of North Adelaide's best. Rozee was not great but still did one or two things which make him look a class above state league level.

I watched Stack closely v Vic Metro...strikes me as very like Daniel Rich...good when the ball is gettable but lazy AF when he need to work/chase.

I wasn't enamoured TBH

I don't see Daniel Rich in Stack. Stack is a freak contested ball winner and tackler, but he's not a big guy (physically or vertically). Terrific speed, agility, evasion, has the skills. He's extremely high impact per possession.

He may not have the endurance to run all day, but brings the pressure at the coal face and certainly isn't lazy when the ball is in his area. He has a red hot crack.

I watched the SANFL U17s match already, so all good.

The SANFL Finals have been on channel 7, so the digital pass isn't necessary. I'm watching the SANFL Grand Final replay as we speak on the 7Plus website for anyone else keen to watch it.

Expecting Carlton to pre list Josh Corbett and Gold Coast to pre list Sam Collins as the pre draft, priority access to state leaguers is what Im hearing.

It would be an interesting decision in the face of their needs and having already double the KPP stocks they practically need to pick both Corbett and Collins. They'd be hoping like mad to be able to trade them both on.

Hopefully the AFL in the spirit of the decision will force the clubs to use those picks for mature age prospects with a view towards helping them become more competitive now rather than setting their lists back further by loading up on more kids from the u18s.

Maybe that brings a Mitch Maguire, Mitch Grigg or Michael Gibbons into the mix for Carlton.

it looks like Carlton and Gold Coast will either try and trade these state players for picks in the draft or keep them, i think the best course of action is for them to take these older more mature players and better their team.
