So the question has to be asked, why was he being selected for games ahead of players who needed game time?
We will never know.
120-odd games, Leadership group in 2024 (in spite of clear evidence of not being AFL-best23), Emergency for our SF ==> DELISTED.
None of it makes sense :drunk:.
(I am not blaming 100%-effort-Murphy for being selected, or elevated to the Leadership group but, seriously, doesn't it make Nicks look like an idiot?).

Don't you want "good Club men" around you though? Clearly it's why Smurph and Rob have been voted in to the leadership group.
No you want players whose output is not severely questioned each week.

None of this is Murphys fault.

But yes, no matter how this is spun, it does make Nicks look incompetent as a coach and puts a question mark on his ability as a coach to develop talent.

If it was just Murphy as an isolated example of giving games to guys you're going to cut you might be able to accept it. But this is Groundhog day.

Confirmed

Summing up today it’s hard to put into words the (unfortunate) large part he played on our minds as Crows fans for someone who really shouldn’t have.

Probably got 75 more games than he should’ve just because he tries hard and was friends with influential people at the club, really should’ve just become one of those many obscure mediocre sub-180cm players who got AFL games in a bad side due to solely trying hard.

It is hard to think people at the club back post-2017 really thought he was the player who could replace Charlie Cameron in the team.

Expect Nicks will still out of pure muscle memory will put his name on the team magnet board in round 5 next year.

Anyway here’s a musical tribute after today’s news 🥀

People don't understand the difference between Team Selection and List Management.

Team Selection is about what is best for the short-term: winning the game this week, using whatever resources (players) are available that week.
List Mangement is about what is best for the long-term: building the strongest possible list for future seasons.

Everyone understands this

It is not uncommon for short & long term demands to be conflicting, as is/was the case with Murphy's selection and delisting. Short-term thinking should certainly dominate when playing finals (i.e. 2025), but long-term thinking should dominate late in the season if finals are no longer possible (i.e. 2024).

The issue is that there shouldn't be as big of a gap between what our coach thinks and what the list management team thinks.

We finished 1st in the league and our coach had a one player unavailable for our finals matches (Rankine). Mathew Nicks had Murphy as an emergency which puts him in the 25th-27th best players at our club. Murphy is only 26 years old.

With a squad of 40+ players - there is a definite disconnect.

We have seen this with Nicks and the list management in previous years. In 2022 - Rowe, Ben Davis / 2024 McHenry / 2025 Murphy.

For a 26 year old with no subsequent major injury to be delisted from an AFL list one year after being elevated to the leadership group, by the same coaching regime is totally bonkers. Like sackable bonkers.

Not only that but last weekend he was listed as one of the emergencies!!!

I was doing gardening yesterday and one of my mates rang and said “you are going to be happy, Murphy has been delisted”, well the obvious happened no more gardening yesterday and out came a bottle of red!

I dont hate the bloke. Ive seen him through Crows social media several times and appears to be a great guy. Im a great guy, I just cant football. Being a great guy means little to professional football though. He can hold his head up, he played over 100 games of AFL football. He lucked out. He would know that had he been at any other club during his time he probably would have never played a game or played very minimal. So to survive 8 seasons on an AFL list is something he can be proud of.

And lets be brutally honest here, he has probably been on something like minimum $300k for the past 7-8 years.

You can set your life up earning those sort of $$ and in still be in your twenties.

I’m glad someone has made the decision coz it certainly wasn’t Nicks.

Can anyone remember the last time we’ve delisted a player this soon after the season ended??

Usually even with the most obvious delistees we’ve always worked til after trade week to finalise these decisions.
I reckon we went into PR panic mode when Murphy broke the news himself

That's all well and good but on what planet does "best for the short-term" equal selecting Murphy??

It is just wrong both for the short and long term, that's been one of my problems with Nicks his talent ID is terrible.

Correct, and apparently Smith still hasn't decided on his future yet. How is it even his option? He should be an easy delist.

'Winning' clubs like Hawthorn can tell Premiership Captains (Hodge) and champions of the club (Mitchell) that it's time to move on, but our club can't make a decision on a past-it HBF when it's time.
Yeah, "Smith still hasn't decided yet".

Who gives a shit what Smith decides. Oh you want to play 1 more year, then find somewhere else to do it champ.
