I'm not sure how many AFL teams have these mottos on their emblems anymore, but I do know a few of the older emblems that you don't see anymore had Latin mottos and Carlton is the most obvious one from today.

Why is Latin used? Why not another language? Is there any particular reason or significance behind the use of Latin on some club emblems, and not just AFL clubs. Please, forgive my ignorance.

Western civilization tradition I guess the obvious reason. Latin is used in medicine and science for naming and classification. It acted as a universial language for Western European texts on nature and science until French, German and then English in the last 100 years became dominant. Issac Newton's work is written in Latin even though he was English. Knowledge of Latin became a symbol of being elite and intellectual. Knowing Latin use to mean you were considered well educated. Above the riff-raff :p. In Dead Poets' Society they show the private school kids still learning Latin in the 1950s. Schools, governments and most organisations let alone sporting clubs would have Latin mottos and it's continued on as a tradition till this day. Only with new schools and new local councils of the last decade or so do you see English mottos. They don't look as posh lol.

Latin is, in my view, reflective of tradition.

As the above poster said have a look at other logos and emblems ( council, state govt etc) and they're all latin.

It adds a touch of class. I think all sides should be encouraged to have a latin motto.

Like everything that uses latin, scientific names, legal terms etc, its used for motto's because it's a dead language.

Mottos in english can change in meaning over the years and become pretty ludicrous (like anything including a word such as "gay").

A latin phrase retains its meaning forever.

Latin motto's on emblems just adds that touch of cheap and pretentious to it.

Carlton and Saints can keep it.
