He wouldn't step down from the Qantas chairmanship either, it took ages to get him to go and the shareholders at Woodside want him gone and he won't step down from there either. There is a pattern here.

A really ordinary chairman that sticks around through ego, despite every company and its constituents calling for his head for incompetence.

I've actually found it amazing how long the football public and media have let him off the hook for. He was lucky Gillon was a good operator, but as soon as the hiring of the new ceo and the new ceo being incompetent put him in the spotlight, he should have been targeted. I'm glad it's finally starting to happen.

Caroline Wilson's article today is certainly change of direction from the 'everyone stop picking on Laura Kane' piece she wrote a month or so ago.

Surely the only reason McLachlan hung around was because he knew the incoming Dillon was on L plates and likely to perform poorly. Why he didn't appoint Brendon Gale is a colossal misjudgment.

Yet Brendon Gale was offered the 2IC job to Dillon, what a slap in the face. Should have been the other way around.

And there's no way on earth Graeme Wright or Geoff Walsh would ever entertain reporting to the grossly inexperienced and out of her depth Kane. Unbelievable the AFL thought they could even try this sort of thing.

Kane then dug in by appointing someone as her 2IC who has no relevant experience. She should have been overruled but wasn't.

Complete shambles and failure of governance. Imagine the AFL with Gale and Walsh or Wright at the helm.

McLachlan hung around for so long after announcing his plans to depart because of Richard Goyder consternation in picking a successor. That process went on for a year.

They both give off the vibe of having little command of anything, and Dillon's got zero presence, while people just roll their eyes at Kane.

I haven't read her job description or statement of her duties but she appears to be responsible for Umpiring and Tribunal. Other General Managers are Josh Mahoney Football Operations, Emma Moore, Women's competition, Nick Couston, Talent. Dillon's been at the AFL for 14 years, now, in a variety of roles. As CEO, his job includes overseeing the General Managers. Kane's job is in the area that's most controversial so she cops more flack than others. Dillon's low key. After Demetriou and Oakley, I don't mind that.
