Wouldnt it be better to play Simmo and get him into some form? or is he in there already because players are being rested?

scapegoat

Scapegoat? For what? He said it and it's naive to think that he'd get away with it with an apology. If the matter was better handled by the ACB then it wouldn't have gotten this far,may have only got 2 games, either way he got his right whack!

He should have got a fine for abusive language and left it at that, his comments were neither racist nor overly offensive. 5 matches is just ridiculous, just what the ICC wanted before the WC, lets find a white guy to make a scapegoat out of.

Sri Lankans are renowned for their racist remarks, Zimbabwe is a nation run by a murderous racist government yet the ICC have no problem with these situations, doesn't fit their 'lets blame it on the white man' image I guess.

And the funny thing is that Lehmann shouldn't have been out in the first place, the action replay frame that first showed the bails to be raised from the stumps clearly show that he had made his ground.

There's no way two little words are deserving of a five match suspension. It's clearly an attempt by the ICC to take a hard line on racism, and they are making an example of Lehmann.

Lehmann suspended
AAP - 18 January 2003

ADELAIDE, Jan 18 AAP - Australian batsman Darren Lehmann was today suspended for five one day international matches for breaching the International Cricket Council's racial vilification code.

Lehmann was found guilty of a breach during a three hour hearing in Adelaide today.

Lehmann is the first international cricketer to be suspended for breaching the game's racial code of conduct.

Lehmann was to have been vice captain in the tomorrow's one day match against England at Adelaide Oval, but national selectors are believed to have summoned New South Wales batsman Michael Clarke as his replacement.

The South Australian and Yorkshire captain had already apologised for a racial slur after being dismissed against Sri Lanka in one day match in Brisbane on Wednesday.

He offered a verbal and written apologies to the Sri Lankans which were immediately accepted.

The Australian Cricket Board instructed Lehmann to also undergo counselling but did not impose a further penalty, prompting the ICC to charge the left-handed batsman under its racial vilification code.

Think you will find Symonds will play (for what it is worth). Perhaps the line-up for tomorrow:

Gilchrist (c)
Maher
Martyn
Clarke
Bevan
Symonds
Watson
Hogg
Williams
Bracken
McGrath

Looks very different to the 1st ODI game!

IF Lehmann had said the same words directly to the Sri Lankans on the field, he should have has the book thrown at him. However, he didn't, as it was said in the dressing room to no one (ie. to himself in fustration). Unfortunately it was overheard by Lloyd. An apology should have been enough given it was not a personal attack - certainly the Sri Lankans were happy with this - but Mal Speed (the same guy who covered up the Mark Waugh weather report issues) wanted to make an example of him. Would Ranatunga or Ganguly be treated the same if the shoe was on the other foot?

He was definitely a scapegoat in this.........

I think the ICC are a joke on this issue as I bet if a Sri Lankan, Pakistan, Indian or player from a non-english speaking nation made a similar comment in their native language nothing would be done as the person hearing it would have no idea what was actually said.

If the ICC are supposedly so serious about this they would have translaters listening to all comments made on the field and after this incident in the dressing room and everywhere else the players go with 'big brother' type monitoring.

Can't see it happening myself which IMO makes the ICC and in particular Mal Speed's stance on this an absolute joke and an embaressment to the game.

Not sure about that. He was ACB CEO when all was revealed in 1998. But I don't think he was in that position when the Waugh/Warne thing was swept under the carpet in 1994.

The ICC shouldn't stick their noses in when it's not needed.

Oh for gawsake! The guy racially vilified the Sri Lankans and admitted that he did to the extent that he apologised in writing and personally to the Sri Lankan team and all some people can say is "if" "if" "what if" etc! Just deal with the charge and accept that it was just and in line with ICC penalties (could have got 4 tests and 8 ODI's). Please don't make unsubstantiated allegations and then use them as some sort of justification for Boof's stupidity. He was guilty! What did you expect?

Nobody is denying his guilt, but most are questioning the severity of the penalty.

If it was an on-field incident, a severe penalty should apply, but in this instance there was no altercation with any other player, and it occurred within the confines of the Australian dressing room.

Two games would have been more appropriate IMHO.

I have no problem with Lehmann being found guilty and punished as long as it's a level playing field for all nations........IMO for that to be the case all comments should be under the same scrutiny.

If they are no problem..........
