Well done for two out of three TOD. Painters and Dockers and Hoodoo Gurus - the third band I was thinking of are definitely from the Australian underground music scene (similar era to the Psychotic Turnbuckles). I'll supply the answer to the third band after giving some of the music aficionados here a little more time to reply.

There you go. As a big, fat, famous bastard once said - two out of three, etc, etc.

Btw, I wouldn't hold your breath too long for an answer. There's only, like, two or three people who still post on this thread.

And from a similar era The Eastern Dark who's career was tragically cut short when singer/guitarist James Darroch was killed in a car accident when they were heading to Melbourne from Sydney to play some shows. Vale James.

I have the 7" displayed in the bottom clip.

It is, quite simply, one of the best singles ever released in this country.

The Eastern Dark were a truly phenomenal band. The retrospective anthology put together by the good people at Half A Cow records is essential, IMO.

Ahhhhh Ween.... I'm getting a sweet wave of brown at the prospect of Ween returning to Australian shores. The 3 hour show they played at The Forum last year was one of my highlight gigs of 2008.

Ween definitely deserve a feature spot here.

No Ween feature spot on the North board is complete without the following song.

You just couldn't find a more perfect tribute to JYD than a track called "What Deaner Was Talkin' About".

Also happens to be one of my favourite songs of theirs, too.

Killer tune.

A very prophetic song (google the lyrics).

Full Metal Jackoff (Parts 1 & 2) - Jello Biafra and D.O.A.

And my other two favourite Ween songs.....

The Posies' Jon Auer does a brilliant cover of the latter on his "6 1/2" Ep (pretty poorly captured here live in Barcelona).

Like the Jello and DOA stuff. Right up there in his discography, IMO.

Picked this up recently for cheap, and on a hunch, and later found some very positive reviews on the interweb from the discerning music critic types.

Loving it. Simple, catchy, fun. Custom built for Summer.

The budget video clips in the kitchen only serve to increase their stocks.

Lard are cool.

As I look to the (semi) contemporary, thank you for consistently dragging me back to the late 80's/early 90's.

M'eh. I'ma go with the flow.

Third. Best. Band. Ever.

If you can't find something to like in this, you don't have a pulse.

The Lawrence Arms, btw.

This is one of my favourite songs ever.

I owe you for this.

Such a good song.

"And we're finally here, and shit yeah it's cool..."

The guitar outro is sublime. Love it.

While I'm here....another one of my favourite songs by another one of my all time favourite bands.

Can't understand why more people are onto these guys. F***ing brilliant band.

Whao, some heavy early Beatles influences (Guides by Voices) there Deano.

Nice tunes.

Here's three tracks from one of the great Australian records. Play them LOUD!

Yes it is an absolutely awesome album but you have missed the opening track... RIP Robbie "Rocket" Watts... he was one of the good guys.

And from their debut... this is pretty much as good as is gets.

OK. It's time I get serious about this thread and the great music in it. :stern looky thing

Now this is the best song ever.

Rock on and enjoy.:thumbsu:

Thanks Zondor :thumbsu:

Just for you some more fine Scandinavian music... Midnight Nambla by Turbonegro

PS - I suggest you google NAMBLA if you aren't sure what it is...

Lost Cause is my favorite track off the album, but I went for a couple of the more obscure cuts from the record.

"Go The Hack" sits comfortably in my top ten all time greatest Aussie albums. It's relentless.

RIP Robbie "Rocket" Watts... he was one of the good guys.

Yep, I was lucky enough to catch them down at Lorne many years back in front of less than 100 people. They didn't care, they still played like they were playing to 50,000 people. I played pool with them prior to their gig, and they were great down to earth people. No flies on these blokes.

Say, what really happened to Robbie Watts?

I'm unreliably informed that this picture is from his last gig with the band in Bendigo.

The Psychos signature tune. Gangrene Dream is also a favorite of mine.

Firmly on the plus side, I encourage you to see a Canadian band called The Weakerthans. Formed by the bass player from pop-punk band, Propagandhi. They're pretty much straight (and catchy) indie rock. Needless to say, they seem waaaaay out of place on the Soundwave bill. Be that as it may, they are a very fine band with one of the best lyricists in the business.

I am a huge fan of Propagandhi and I like the few Samson songs they have before he left even if they were a huge departure from the rest of Propagandhi's very angry songs. Since he left they are far from a pop/punk band now they are a punk/thrash metal band.

I heard 1 song that put me off this band, Plea from a cat named something or other. Might give them another chance.

Yep. They were a great band, fronted by a hard-drinking, high-kick-delivering maniac named Robert Pollard. A man who at last count has penned somewhere in the vicinity of 2000 songs. Many of them excellent.

Fulfilled a long time wish when I finally saw them play two nights in a row at the Corner. Awesome shows.

For the uninitiated who might be daunted by such a massive backlog of recordings, head straight for Guided By Voices' "Alien Lanes", or "Bee Thousand", or for a slightly higher-fi take on things, "Under The Bushes, Under The Stars". Those three albums are generally considered to be their masterworks. All three essential listening, IMO.

I'll leave this topic now, but before I do.....some further delving on youtube has unearthed my two favourite Guided By Voices songs.....

I'm done holding by breath... the band featured in The Groovy Guru episode were called The Sacred Cows... their name was the inspiration for the third band.

Here's three tracks from one of the great Australian records.

As an avowed Psychos fan, no argument from me, Wal.

Yes it is an absolutely awesome album but you have missed the opening track... RIP Robbie "Rocket" Watts... he was one of the good guys.

He was.

And from their debut... this is pretty much as good as is gets.

Yep again.

Lost Cause is my favorite track off the album...

Changes for me.

Big fan of "Rip 'n Dig". Love "She's Crackin' Up". Love "Pub". The list goes on.

Yep, I was lucky enough to catch them down at Lorne many years back in front of less than 100 people. They didn't care, they still played like they were playing to 50,000 people.

Similar experience seeing them play a mid-week show once at the Sarah Sands. Absolutely killed it to a crowd that barely numbered 30 (admittedly very lucky) people.

I played pool with them prior to their gig, and they were great down to earth people. No flies on these blokes.

Yep, met them a few times now. (Lost count of how many times I've seen them play live.) They're quality blokes.

Say, what really happened to Robbie Watts?

Yeah, not sure. They didn't (publicly) release the cause of death at the time of his passing, and I'm not sure I recall hearing a reason since.

Thanks for the memories, though, guys. Fcuk, I loved that late 80's/early 90's time in Australian music. So many good bands about. Tactics, The Triffids, Wet Taxis, The Stems, Blue Ruin, Huxton Creepers. [EDIT: The Sacred Cowboys !!] The Hoodoos were still cool. Hunters & Collectors likewise. Used to really dig this obscure (but excellent) punk band from Adelaide called The Spikes. Still regularly listen to Lime Spiders, The Screaming Tribesmen, Exploding White Mice, The Trilobites, etc.

Used to be obsessed with this song, too.....

Yeah, Sacred Cowboys.

Just edited them into my previous post. :thumbsu:

Plenty more great memories there. All bands I saw and loved at the time. I was also into stuff like X, feedtime and Grong Grong (another great Adelaide band).

Are you going to see The Lime Spiders at Northcote Social Club, 19 December?

One more in memory of Rocket... another band from that time that Robbie played in.

I must admit that I've lost track of Propagandhi over the years. I know they're still together, but if that's the direction they've gone, I'm not sure I'd like them so much anymore.

Truth be told, I'm not such a massive pop/punk fan anyway. I like a few specific bands. (Older stuff mainly - The Ramones of course, Chemical People, Big Drill Car, Screeching Weasel, Descendents. I actually prefer All, but often they're not very pop/punky at the best of times. Sicko are my favourite pop/punk band of all time.)

Given my taste in music, I was all good with Samson's change of direction.

I heard 1 song that put me off this band, Plea from a cat named something or other. Might give them another chance.

It's called "Plea From A Cat Named Virtute". And I hear ya.

Tbh, the first two albums "Fallow" and "Left And Leaving" had their moments, but the hints of emoness and lyrical self-indulgence, although faint, were still off-putting. It's not until they released the excellent "Reconstruction Site" that they really lifted it a notch. Amped-up and pretty much moping-free, and with a much more catchy, uptempo vibe in their tunes. A trend that continued with 2007's "Reunion Tour" album.

Definitely worth another chance, Jabso.

I couldn't agree more mate. It's no coincidence that it was the period just prior to pokies taking over former live music venues either. Weekends were chock full of band options, in big venues, and pumping venues at that. Those were the days.
