Seeing as Lidia discussion is cropping up across multiple threads, let's have us a thread for people who want to discuss her contribution to Australian politics.

It should go without saying but seeing as she's a bit of a beacon for controversy - for a variety of reasons - let's just remind ourselves what the board rules are around racism and sexism, shall we?

Standard board rules apply, but let's make this abundantly clear: let's play nicely in here.

Go nuts.

you'd think in 2025 you'd understand the concept of burn it all down

but I'm sure you do, you'd just rather tone police a black woman because its easier right?
Her race and gender has nothing to do with it. It's a poor choice of words, regardless of the point she was attempting to make.

Had she not previously used an actual fire as a talking point, the conversation would be very different.

If a white man had made the same remarks, with the same history of being seen to cheer on arson, I would react exactly the same way.

The fire was at old parliament house's wooden doors, where there is also minimal security presence. No one is burning down new parliament house, or even starting a small fire, so easily.

I don't have a problem with her choice of words, as I don't take it as a threat to the physical structure, more to the inherent cronyism.
Ahhhh, so arson is ok as long as it's on a small scale?

Then, at absolute best, it's a terrible choice of words given there has previously been a fire at parliament house that she made light of.

She applauded the doors of the old parliament house being set alight, so I don't think it can be categorically stated that she wasn't talking about arson...
You can argue that what she said was irresponsible, or dangerous rhetoric etc.

No one can pretend that she needs to be investigated for planning a terrorist attack... Or arson etc.

Almost any other MP could have made the exact same statement, and this wouldn't be a story.

Barnaby says more stupid stuff than this before his morning shit each day.

Barnaby was caught passed out drunk, laying on the street... and anyone critical of him was accused of attacking him for a medical condition...

Thorpe was harassed outside a nightclub, and everyone demanded she be deported...

lol whatever you need to tell yourself

much much worse things get said daily without the focused outrage of the media, the political class and all the people in the general public who are definitely not racist or misogynist but only seem to point the finger under the right circumstances

If Nathan Buckley, on his recent new appointment, said "We need to burn down the Geelong Footy Club and start again" I would not take that as meaning he wants to physically set buildings on fire and murder every existing person connected with the Geelong Football Club.

No, he'd be talking about institutional and maybe cultural change.

But don't you know that there was a huge industrial fire in Geelong this year. He clearly meant to have another such fire.

Who was it who gloated at Covid deaths in Victoria?

His name rhymed with "Barnaby Joyce".

Can't say I recall seeing or hearing about that at the time. If you'd like to post a link I'll happily condemn that too...
No idea what people get out of pretending this was anything more than a turn of phrase.

Pointless distraction.
