I saw enough today to believe that the local powers-that-be have made a big mistake in allowing GC17 to field unrestricted teams in the NEAFL all year.

They will romp this comp in. NT the only danger.

Wait until they get a few injuries. They will drop off for sure. Like the Lions reserves over the last few years-too good for the QAFL at full strength, but towards the bottom when injured and using a heap of top ups.

If X has hurt himself again I am literally going to go insane. Poor bloody bloke - we could use him atm too.

Why is this, how come they can field full-strength teams and the lions have a restricition to the number of listed players that can play, and have to resort to playing top-up players

Pretty sure the Lions can field as many listed players as they want too. The difference is that the Suns have a concession of a larger playing roster. This means they have a bigger pool of listed players to play in the reserves.

Nah there is a limit of about 14 AFL listed players each week I think.

Yeah I'm not sure of the number to be honest. Somewhere around that ballpark. Should have expressed that a bit more clearly in my previous post, my bad.

The Lions had no restrictions on Saturday, but as the number of available players was down to begin with, it was merely academic.

The clamps go on us when we play other QAFL sides whereas GC17 have free reign all season.

it's rather distressing that none of our second-tier players are putting their hands up nor knocking the door down asking to be selected.

it seems those in the mix over the last couple of weeks either had quiet games or did not play.

you would think that a player with a modicum of form would be a stand-up start for a game with the seniors still winless.

You might be forgetting that:

1) Retzlaff had just been elevated
2) Green sat out as the non-playing emergency
3) Beams was playing seniors

I thought the number had been increased to 16 for us this year. Just something I had in teh back of my mind. It might be completely incorrect.

The Lions can select max 19 listed out of 23 in the NEAFL when playing the NEAFL clubs. Max 15 allowed on the field in the first half and 16 in the second.

They very rarely (never) have more than 19 available (do the math 22 or 23 for the seniors out of a list of 44 minus injuries) so essentially they play everyone available each week.

IMO they should make it official- no player restrictions like the Suns and GWS enjoy. The NEAFL is strong enough now for this to happen.

I've put up some photers from last week's game against GC17.

And they're corkers as usual. :thumbsu:

Really should edit mine from the Southport mauling. For once you and I stood in different spots so our photos aren't similar! :p

If GWS can put 4 quarters together (1st half against the Swans reserves was good last week It was pretty much all level at HT in that game) they could keep the Lions within a respectable margin.

Injuries are really starting to stretch our depth. There's 13 listeds listed in the side (with only 12 likely to play) plus the two scholarships and the remainder being top-ups. I'm not overwhelmingly confident, tbh.
