AFLW List Build - Victorian Expansion Clubs

Remove this Banner Ad

Analysis of the list builds of the 4 Victorian Clubs added in 2018/2019 makes for very interesting reading.

We did just ok with our initial build, identifying some real talent and trading in stars. The problem for us is that we have a few who are pretty much running on the spot now and haven't kicked on from last year/year before. With AFLW having small lists and the draft talent improving each year you can't afford the luxury of waiting season after season for a player to develop.

St Kilda focused on VFLW talent as we did but unlike us they didn't recruit any players like Brennan or Conti. Makes a massive difference. Quite a few of their initial list build players are gone and without any real stars they really need Patrikios back although the Essendon drums will be beating loudly me thinks.

I think Geelong stuffed up their build. Their focus on Geelong region based players was flawed. Just not enough talent. As you can see a heck of a lot are gone. No trades speaks volumes. If their gun recruit Prespakis goes they will be in even more strife. Out of the four clubs they have the fewest players from their build remaining.

North nailed their build. They raided other teams and they didn't give a sh*t who they upset. You look at the names and its no wonder they are matching it with the foundation clubs (and have even gone past 3 or 4.) They had links to Melbourne Uni who were a strong VFLW team prior to AFLW starting and Nth had no trouble getting a few ex Uni guns to shift across to Nth when they entered the comp. They did a fantastic job spotting other talent and going after it Personally I think they have underachieved and should have just about had a flag by now. That's how good their list build was.

I'll start with Richmond. Players in bold are still at the club. These are players recruited before draft day.

Thank you very much TM2 - agree, probably deserves it's own thread otherwise this may well be dragged into every other game thread arguments going forward.

So yes, Nth nailed it didn't they - but weren't they before our entry? 2 AFLW seasons? We are most comparable to StK, WestCoast, Gold Coast aren't we from a timing perspective.

North had only 5 draft picks (least) compared to our 13 draft picks (most) from that table above - were the opportunities the same do you think?

When you look at that Overall 2019 draft again - not a lot of names jump out at you - talent very low based on player results so far. Here are our our picks - underwhelming to say the least:

More good work thanks!

Cheers.

The really odd thing is that all these teams are sitting at about 55% retention of their first year squad as at 2022. Was expecting bigger differences than 1-2% between teams.

Our first draft retention as at 2022 is poor at only 23% (Geel 70%, StK 71%, Nth 40%) but this can pretty much be explained by the fact that 10 of the 13 picks were pick 40 or higher with 6 of them above pick 71. You are really hitting the bottom of the barrel with those in 2019. Probably did well to get Kate Dempsey at 84.

Geelong had 7 of their 10 picks at pick 35 or under which is probably why their retention is high. Same with Saints. All of their 6 picks (7th was a pass) came at pick 41 and below.

Nth also had 3 of their 5 picks at #55 or above resulting in 40% retention as at 2022.

Tigers have had 7 Delisted , 3 Retired, 3 Delisted that were picked up by other clubs & 2 Traded players up to season 2022
15 player turn over

Saints have had 6 Delisted , 3 Retired, 1 Delisted that was picked up by other clubs & 4 Traded players up to season 2022
14 player turn over

Cats have had 11 Delisted , 4 Retired, 1 Delisted that was picked up by other clubs & 1 Traded player up to season 2022
18 player turn over

Kangas have had 12 Delisted , 1 Retired, 1 Delisted that was picked up by other clubs, 3 Traded & 2 Expansion joining players up to season 2022
19 player turn over

in the list builds i'd have
Kangas way in front, they recruited many excellent players & given their exclusive rights on Tasmania U/19 girls, Mia King (2019), Perri King (2021) & Claire Ransom, a gun, who should be in the top 6 best players this coming draft, but they'll get her for next to nothing

Tigers 2nd best, trading PICK 1 for Mon Conti was a brilliant move, Gabby Seymour as a Rookie & Tessa Lavey for PICK 43 can't be underestimated
Miller, Wakefield initially & recruiting Sarah Hosking, Sarah D'Arcy, Harriet Cordner, Maddie Shevlin, Poppy Kelly & Jess Hosking are all easily best 21 players thus far
yeah sure our 1st year drafting and season was woeful, but now we have passed Cats & Saints, our list has more balanced & has potential to win against anyone (barring injuries!)

Cat's & Saints are equal 3rd best
Cat's seem to be near fully rebuilding, playing younger players after getting rid of a heap of older players, losing Olivia Purcell wasn't what they needed
but i'm not sure how'll they cope if G.PRESPAKIS, leaves for the Dons, will they continue to take a chance on non Geelong Falcon U/19 girls, like the Calder Cannons Prespakis & Zali Friswell, or will they cower back down that well trodden, but ultimately unsustainable path (Geelong girls or bust!)
other than trading in Chloe Scheer, Chantel Emonson from Crows & Dees respectively, their list is 98% Cats VFLW, U/19 Falcons with a couple of GWV Rebels, Murry Bushrangers draftees, very xenophobic list building

Saints, i'm unsure what they're doing, part/full rebuild ATM?
trading out Jessica Sedunary, Claudia Whitfort, Alison Drennan & Poppy Kelly to other clubs, doesn't look good or make sense as these players are playing good footy for their new clubs
losing G.PATRIKIOS (Vax) & TYANNA SMITH (ACL injury) has badly exposed their list as wafer thin, lacking depth
Patrikios strongly rumoured to go to Dons doesn't bode well
trading in Kate McCarthy, Bianca Jakobsson & Jayde Van Dyk is about it, they seem too draft happy

Cats & Saints haven't been successful in trading in mature players, or is it more like they haven't tried hard enough?
maybe players are reluctant to go?
maybe they see the way forward is near total drafting?
for 4 years Cats have only traded in 2 players, not good enough where their list is at

other than Kangas, i would rather be in the Tigers position, not as elite as Kangas, but solid never the less

Great summary Stan.

"solid" is pretty much my thinking too.
