With Ross Lyon as the new coach what list development can we expect? Which player are likely to thrive, who is likely to stagnate / become 2nd choice.
The opinion of most StKilda supporters appears to be that Lyon gave to few opportunities to new young players and stuck with the more experienced players. I don’t have a great knowledge of the Saints list, so I am unsure if this was due to lack of good young talent, or if he indeed is slow with bringing young guys in the team.
So what would this mean for our list… and the development of players like Crichton, Roberton, Pitt, Walters (if still around), Sibosado, Faulks, Bollenhagen, Mellington, and maybe even Morabito??
Do you guys think the appointment of Lyon is likely to stagnate the development of our younger players, or will benefit…. Who will thrive, who might suffer??

Lyon will find look at every player, determine their strengths and weaknesses and will find what position/role they are most suited to. The players you have mentioned have as much chance, if not more under Lyon as they did with Harvey to prove their worth to the team. Call it a second chance.

After that the 'left overs' or 'depth' will be re-assessed according to age. With the younger players given more leeway, and told that they have to adress X amount of issues or face the scrap heap. While older players will only be kept 2 years /traded/ unless they pull a Peake.

Likely to see Pav return to "develop" at FF and kick 60 again, likely to see Mayne strapped back to his flank to "develop", likely to see Barlow "develop" on ball all game every game, basically a lot less of the left-field "development": and likely to see the team "develop" another 3 or 4 wins each & every year.

This:thumbsu:. There's some low hanging fruit here!

I dont get this "Lyon didnt develop Stk's kids/list" crap.. how/why would he over the last 3 years when they have been going hell for leather at the premiership.. surely you cant be doing that and playing kids at the same time (Cue those "But Collingwood have done it"..) and when he did have injuries, he generally gave the kids a crack, Ie. J.Steven and Armitage for Hayes this year and when Riewoldt was injured last year it was mostly guys like Stanley (couple other young KPF's who's name escapes me). He also gave games to some youngsters this year earlier on when they were struggling.. and then when they started to fire the senior blokes came back and continued on their merry way.

IMO he hasnt needed to develop anything as yet as a senior coach... so the jury is still out if anything

yeah. not to mention that being strapped to the top of the ladder means that you dont have the best draft picks either. other than mcevoy and armitage how many earlier picks have they had in his time?

Actually think Mcevoy was one of the first draft picks he had since he tool the coaching gig and he was given lots of opportunity to develop.

Like everybody else I agree that you need to blood a few youngsters each year to ensure the future of the club but I dont nessecarily believe that the plan next yr should to play all of the kids that we draft. Injuries permitting the amount of players that will be pushing to make the best 22 next yr should mean that there wont be too many spots for draftees.

If we are serious about finals and top 4 the plan should be to settle the side as much as possible and I hope more effort is put into the development of the second, third and fourth yr players who we really need to step up and fill the many gaps in our side. Sure I'd like to see some rookies get a game but this should be more based on form in the wafl rather than the pure need to develop players for the future.

I think Collingwood's development process this yr is what we should be aiming towards with only 4 players debuting (only 2 first yr players), combined these guys got 23 games, Fasolo playing 12 of those and now at the business end of the season these guys are struggling to get games as the more mature players are performing better.

Nice post. This is what I'm most excited about seeing over the next few years.

Every coach we've ever had has been obsessed with weird-ass tinkering and experimenting with players all over the shop (maybe with the exception of Drum who was just a shit coach in general).

Just once I'm looking forward to having a coach with the philosophy of putting players in their best positions every week so they know exactly what role is expected of them every week.

Hasn't stopped Geelong from picking up Duncan, Menzel, Cristensen etc or Hawks getting Savage, Puopolo, Suckling, Smith etc. Pies have done alright too.

I don't think we'll be blooding many kids next year. The last back of Pitt, Michie and Mellington will get a gig at times though I think. Also think Crichton will be a regular.

Lyon has seemed to do better with getting the most out of the mature guys rather than the youngsters but that may have just been a function of the Saints list. He has tried hard to get guys with pace into the Saints side often at the expense of skills (think of Peake). There are a few one paced guys in your side who might be a bit worried about this.

A lot of the "development" I think will come from a well thought out structure and guys knowing what they are to do and when to do it. I think you probably missed Scott a bit in this regard this year and will rediscover it next year under Lyon.

"Modern" football has a consistent tendency to over-think itself and I think Harvey got sucked into that, this year.

We don't have a screaming need for many more new players to come in, unless their form or injuries force it.

If we have our first round and get someone like Kersten I would like to see them play, and we would target a mature player again you would think. Add in Clark, and that is already significant changes to a best 22.

I would not be massively surprised to see you go after a clearance type midfielder but otherwise I think you're pretty well placed.

Agree about the clearance player. We do have a couple of other deficiencies as well though, especially a defender to play on small opposition forwards.

Ross gets into town today.

Here starteth the fun...

I'm looking forward to some proper analyses of our list. Some real questions being asked relating to his plans. Although this is the WA media so i'm probably asking too much.

Also considering that Lyon is not supposed be much of a media friendly bloke, and combined with the way he was confronted during the presser, I wouldn't be surprised if we hear nothing. In terms of interviews etc. He is probably going to lock the place down and give a big FU to the WA media boys club.

Now that I think of it, is there anyway Bigfooty mods could organise a FFC rep to answer some questions from Bigfooty poster? We have done it before, haven't we?

He's apparently doing an interview with the West tomorrow.

As for the last part, no we can't. Coincidentally, I checked again today to see if we could get anything...

As part of the new deal with Telstra, clubs are not permitted under any circumstances to give exclusive content to anyone other than the Telstra run websites...

It's bullshit, but I guess you don't pay $150 million otherwise.

The shit thing is, journos can do interviews and then publish on their own sites, while others get nothing...

And I suppose you have to be an accredited AFL journo or something.
We need our own resident hutchy, that is willing to search through the odd wheelie bin for a good story.
