Discussion List Management: How many players will St Kilda delist?

What is the actual number? My guess is 5 players delisted, with both Harvey and G-Train retiring.

With seven departures, it will give St.kilda four picks in the national draft. Two players then can be promoted off the Rookie list (Eddy and McQualter???) Then this leaves one spare spot, which could be used for a pre-season draft pick.

Then the possible players getting delisted is for further debate.

Thoughts?

I feel L.Fisher will be gone - totally out of favor with Lyons

It appears very likely L.Fisher will be in trouble at season end. Contract expires and can not break into the senior team, despite displaying some solid form at VFL level.

Leigh was held in high esteem by the playing group (hence the No. 6), he looked ready made to progress into the midfield. As part of the progress to this, he was given the role of being a "hard tag". In this role he made the epithet "the glove" seem like a soft cousin - he was a limpet - he stuck to his man virtually taking him out of the match. He was so monomanic about his task that he did not gain many possessions himself. It's hard to gain recognition when the numbers do not support you. Ross Lyon wants players who do both. (Take the opponent out AND contribute healthily as well). He was given a fair chance to prove himself early this season. In one match he was even given the role of the loose man in defence - the go to man - his possession count skyrocketed that match. His distribution of the ball was not perfect though. No doubt given more experience in the role he would have improved. We have been spoiled by the superb skills of Goddard and Sam Fisher in defence. Gilbert's season was interrupted by the shoulder injury but since returning he has steadily improved. His kicking has not yet reached the level of Leigh Fisher's skill, but he has more pace and stands a lot taller. Both attributes put him ahead of Leigh. Another who is fighting for a spot and might be in the same boat is Ferguson. Fergs has the flair, the marking skills and pace to make it as a forward in the AFL, but his kicking is woeful. That is why he so frequently gets used down back. Gwilt and Raph are two others who have been shuffled down back when they may be more effective off a forward flank. Dempster was a coup. Good defenders take time to develop. Sydney had done all the hard work, playing him while he was still a marginal player - then we grab him and he blossoms into a ready-made defender who can sneak forward and use that booming kick for goal.

Leigh Fisher, one of M.Gardiner or M.Rix., Matt Ferguson, Shane Birss, Charlie Gardiner, B.Howard.

Brad Howard just re-signed until 2010.
Charlie Gardiner will be an interesting one, he's found his place in the side but it remains to be seen for how long. Contract expires at the end of the year, but i have a feeling he may see a new contract.
Shane Birss would be very unlucky if he was delisted. He tears it up at Casey yet is continually overlooked for senior selection. Could be in trouble based on that.
Leigh Fisher is gone.
I'd say Rix is gone too.
Ferguson gone.

True - but you will need to delist others for the first three rounds (as well as our own 4th round pick if we intend to use it) and for Eddy and McQualter coming in from the rookies even with Harvey and Gehrig retiring.

As much as I like Leigh Fisher, I suppose that he is rather prominent on such list. If you trade him for a 4th round draft pick (and you intend to use that 4th round draft pick - i.e. the intention is not just to find him a new club without the indignity of the PSD), you will need to find someone else to be delisted.

I always hate these times - rarely do I want to see a St Kilda player leave the club, especially if they work as hard and remain as loyal and honest as someone like Leigh Fisher. It's a cruel world for these young men - yet on the other hand there are millions of other young (or not so young) men who'd give away all they have for just one game of AFL football.

I think the role Attard can play in defence is important. He did a reasonable job in 2007.

Attard
Gwilt - but better suited elsewhere.
Raph - but better suited elsewhere.
BJ - But we want him in the midfield.

Fiora, C Gardner, Allen,

Players who might be able to play the tallish defence role but never really tried.

IMO Rix is more likely to go than M Gardner.
I would not be surprised if either C Gardner or Fiora went.

I know Fiora is under contract but a trade for pick 90 or so could fix that.

With Attard:
We lack a defender who can play on smalls. Particylarly smalls with pace. With Dempster out for a year, and Baker still an unknown Attard will be kept (though I do not know if he can be kept as a rookie). If not as rookie then that is going to squeeze out someone.

Definate to go:

Someone has to go. So three already to me are:
Rix: With Ben being a year older he can now be the back-up ruck, M Gardiner will be kept if medically ok as he can still play and king may go down. Rix is clearly not up to AFL.
Ferg: Too one dimensional and injury prone. We needa spot fora new player and so Ferg will go.
L Fisher: Lacks pace on small forwards, and in the tagger role simply does not win enough ball. McQulater and Birss are both better options.

Gwlt early in the year was looking doubtful, but his late season improvement now sees him asa definate stayer.

Maybes:
Charlie: His finals capmpaign may well effect his retention. Most games he has played this year we have won. While limited he does improve our structure and so until Allen can step up may stay on the list and in the 22.

Fiora: His first season under Lyon was good and this earned him a 2 year contract. This year he has dipped, though apart from the Lions game has not been as bad as many say. However I would imagine he will be on the trade table, though may not gain a nibble.

In the Draft
Ignoring trades we will say have picks 14, 30, 46, 72, but 88 may well not be used as talent would be thin.

Even with 72 the view could be to keep Charlie instead.


Without being cute you can really understand now why Banger had decided to not play on next year.

Without him retiring (and he could have played next year) the Saints would have had to have put a line through a players name that they really did not want to. Brad Howard may well be enternally grateful that Banger has retired as it would most likely have been him.

If we reaaly needed the spot it could be possible to let M Gardner go, but IMO we have been pretty lucky with Kingy's health this year, and I don't think Macca will be advanced enough to be our number one ruck next year, so good to have a spare.
