We currently have 11 (+ Gallagher as a rookie B) out of contract at the end of the year. There's no way we make that many changes, which means you could guess at least 5-7 of the following are retained

Brodie Smith
Chris Burgess
Harry Schoenberg
Hugh Bond
Kieran Strachan
Lachlan McAndrew
Lachlan Murphy
Matt Crouch
Reilly O'Brien
Taylor Walker
Zac Taylor

Schoenberg was put to the rookie list, so he's likely gone. Bond was only given 1 year and they don't seem keen to actually play him, so wouldn't be surprised if he's gone. Strachan is gone too, Burgess is the classic "good SANFL player, not quite good enough for AFL" guy. That's 4 guys already you've cut.

Wouldn't be surprised at all to see them give 1 year deals to Smith, Murphy, Crouch and even give Tex another year. Nicks would be terrified of losing that much experience in one off-season.
Keep in mind McAndrew is basically taking Strachan’s place on the list, currently

So if McAndrew is kept and Strachan isn’t, that doesn’t open up a list spot

I reckon one of Taylor or Bond gets another year, perhaps both.

Burgess and Schoenberg are rookies. O'Brien if he leaves will be directly replaced by another ruckman.

Strachan is on the senior list but McAndrew is his direct replacement on the rookie list, so one of Burgess or Schoenberg will need to depart if McAndrew is retained as a rookie. This would then free up Strachan's primary list spot

My guess is both Burgess and Schoenberg get delisted, McAndrew rookie list, Strachan retires. Net one senior, one rookie spot. That leaves the following out of contract.

Brodie Smith
Hugh Bond
Lachlan Murphy
Matt Crouch
Taylor Walker
Zac Taylor

We of course have to take three players at the national draft, so that would currently be pick 16, Mitch Stevens and a late pick. So at minimum two of the above have to go, probably Taylor Walker and Brodie Smith, both retired.

That leaves us with Bond, Murphy, Taylor and Crouch. It's inevitable some of those will be retained.

If it comes down to needing to fill a few spots because we don't want to bring in draftees or can't through trades, I'd actually rather give a one year deal to Walker or Smith than retain Murphy. I suspect Crouch is retained no matter what.

Think it’ll be:

Out: Walker, Smith, Taylor, Strachan, Murphy; Burgess, Schoenberg
In: trade, trade, draft pick, draft pick, Mitch Stevens; McAndrew, Murphy

Then if ROB leaves, he gets replaced by another ruck

Its an interesting one.

Jimmy Rowe and Matt Wright are 2 guys that come to mind who've played some footy at AFL level and then been delisted.

I reckon he'll get a year though, simply because there's a few in front of him and we wont be that active in the trade and draft period
Would be better with jimmy on the list

I reckon the idea was to pay Rob enough to be a backup ruck. He'd get great money for basically playing SANFL and then be a known quantity when he came in. I reckon that is half our trouble as a club. We like a known quantity, which is why we value experience over everything else.
If ROB is our backup ruck, then we must have a very good ruck coming to take his spot, and it couldn't be Draper. For all of ROB's faults, he is a good solid ruck. He is much better than Draper and shouldn't be backup to him.

If Draper is coming then I would assume ROB is leaving. He would get snapped up pretty quick by someone like Geelong if we are only intending to play his as a backup.

Yeah, I don't see the upgrade (outside of marking) between Rob and Draper to justify the dollars being talked about for Draper.

If they were getting paid 600 and 400, then you know, good deal and solid for the club but that ain't happening, not by a long shot...maybe the 400 bit.

I think Geelong may struggle to offer Rob what he needs though, he is looking to be a neurosurgeon if I remember rightly and there is no way he could set up a practice in Geelong ;)

That looks fair enough.
But six delisted / retiring players looks a lot for a club like us

I could see Chris Burgess getting another rookie contract for a year, along with Crouch

I reckon there would be a lot of business in Geelong for ROB's services after football.

And we have a glut of half backs, including some weve had to play on wings and a kid in the SANFL banging the door down.

For me unless the player is a superstar like a NWM we shouldnt be chasing half backs.
He can play as a genuine wing

Would either play alongside Cumming/Curtin, or push Cumming to his more natural HB position

Six is about par for the course. Don't forget that McAndrew has already been added to the list, and 3 of the proposed delistees are on the rookie list.

Last year we added Peatling, Cumming, ANB, Draper, Welsh and Turray. That's 6, so there's no reason to think the 2025 turnover would be significantly different.

I can see Crouch or Murphy being given another 12 months - but not both. My (strong) preference would be retaining Crouch.

I'd be fairly surprised if Murphy isn't given another deal given he appears to be the first guy off the bench for Rachele, Keays and ANB.
