Which is why we should have cut harder last year, as the draft was so deep.

we were never cutting deep regardless of the draft, we’re holding onto our depth because we believe we’re genuinely contending. No different to this trade period, little will change. And nor it could, we have a pretty average draft hand. We’re sticking phat, this is us for as far as the eye can see.

Our biggest priority should be a new coach, to go along with potentially NWM, a ruckman and key defender.

Behind the scenes I genuinely hope the Club is exploring Buckley or Simpson. We cant simply wait till the end of the year or if mathematically we cant make the 8. Nicks will never be the coach to take us deep into September. Im still not even confident we can even make the 8, despite our draw and reasonable run with injuries and inclusions over the trade and draft period.
Not sure Bucks will coach, but would love him to come to the Crows.

Really should be approaching both Simpson & Longmlre.

Yep, good correction. So Schoey may not get another year without someone like Murphy being a casualty.
Smith & Burgess would be my 2 givens.

Other changes depend on how the year plays out.

Hopefully land a FA which helps.

Buckley would be my first choice. Hopefully it's not a rookie coach or Simon Goodwin.
Goodwin?

Do you agree that it’s unlikely that we’ll be turning over much more than the required minimum?
Depends whether we look to trade some players in/out.

But doubt will be a huge turnover year.

I like Simpson especially his demeanor. Recentish premiership winner who beat Collingwood @ the G. Remember he used a kick mark gameplan to great success in 2018 with Kennedy, Darling, Naitanui, Lycett, Vardy. Could get the best out of Thilthorpe, Fogarty, Walker, Curtin, etc. Also could entice someone like Mcgovern or a promising ruck to come over.

Strange as the thing that would worry me with Simpson in Adelaide would be his demeanour and personality, Adelaide is a unique football town even when compared to Melbourne and Perth. I reckon you need a big reputation/big football resumé and a big personality to draw attention to yourself & away from the team a lot of the time, and they need a alpha leadership style that not only demands respect but puts you well above the playing group and media.

I don’t know if Simpson has that type of leadership qualities and that showed when the scum Kerry Stokes Perth media sensed weakness & started to pick at his carcass over in the West, that would be the only real quality Buckley has over him - sometimes AFL head coaching becomes a pissing contest.

I didnt mention Horse only because my understanding is that he doesnt want to coach again? Could be wrong.

Definitely he should be in the mix of who we should look at for 2026 and beyond.

The Crows dont even realize we are in a prime position to pursue a premiership coach over other Clubs especially given our list and where it is at and importantly the apparent lack of vacant positions for a new coach. Port doing us a massive favour by committing to Carr this early.

There was a good in-depth interview with Longmire in The Age this week. He didn't rule out a return to coaching in the long term, but for now he's still very much burned out and recovering.

Reading between the lines, I don't see him being willing to take on another senior coaching position in 2026 (our timeframe for replacing Nicks). 2028 or 2029 could be possible for him, which would make him a viable option for Tasmania - though he seemed reluctant when that very suggestion was put to him.

Here's the interview:

Unfortunately it's paywalled (work has a subscription, but I can't read it at home).

All the angst about approaching Draper [the ruck] to come to AFC - watching a few of his games he would add so much more to our squad than the current ROB.

Thoughts..
Agree. But also get a developing ruck to hopefully go past him in a couple of years.

Hasn’t he recently signed
Well he hasn’t officially yet, the story came out in the pre-season he was likely to but there’s been crickets since.

After a game like that tonight he’d want to have held off as Reid & co would inevitably probably chuck an extra $25k-$50k on their offer pushing it towards the $800k mark (which is way too much for a ruckman… but I’d be happy for them to pay if it gets rid of ROB).

Draper with 4 contested marks tonight, that’s probably close to what ROB’s taken in the last 2 years.

Don’t know where I got the idea he signed on,

I think all indications have been that Draper is very likely to re-sign at Essendon, loves being in Melbourne and they are offering him good money.

Despite us all changing our tune on him, not sure the likelihood is all that high.

It probably helps his podcast keep going around and it’s numbers if he stays which is probably reason enough for him…
