Why are we looking to replace someone gave a 3 year deal to?

We were looking to replace him whilst having a 2 year deal on the table. The 3rd year was panic because we were out of options and heading into a finals series from the top of the ladder. Signing ROB for an extra year never had any meaning with respect to our longer term ruck strategy.

Attended a BBQ dinner last night, mail man in attendance

- Sanders deal full steam ahead

- Bailey likely stays at Brisbane, $$ needed to pry loose are astronomical, rather keep for potential NWM crack

- Nearly choked on my hoisin kebab when the last one got mentioned for a second … and not for a good reason would be a salary dump , but do not want , would fill a need but spends too much time in medical rooms
I just don't get why we are so hot on Sanders as for me lacks something.

Will watch him more closely this season.

Sanders could be a good buy
We clearly treated him as a junior (as did many) as long as we haven’t seen anything that makes us think his predicted quality was wrong then he’d be a good buy low time in his career

I can’t see him getting regular mid minutes this year either.

So that’s going to keep holding back his output. The the following year being year 4 with genuine opportunity in his ideal role he could’ve ready to really step up

Is he worth spending our 1st rounder on?

Who does he displace in our side?
With a full squad, our inside midfielders are Dawson, Soligo, Rankine, Curtin, Rachele & Peatling. Hopefully add Draper soon.

Imo, we are more in need of a gun wingman type rather than an accumulator.

The last 3 of your list aren't proven midfielders and Soligo has struggled to finish seasons ín good form. Ít might change drastically this year, but until it does, we need to be plann8ng for it to improve a lot. Suns added Petracca to Anderson, Rowell and Miller.

No doubt we need need to improve our midfield... I just haven't seen enough from Sanders yet to suggest he would make a significant improvement.

Will watch him closely this year with interest.

He's probably not going to get the opportunity to show what he can provide us. The Dogs are stacked with accumulator/ clearance players and Sanders is pretty effective at half forward.

The reason he would want to move to the Crows is that he would fill that need for us, where we are very light on.

Outbid in terms of $ or picks?

I don't think we really wanted Draper, he was part of the AhChee play IMO.

Trac was never coming here because we didn’t have the picks.

These corrections will take 10 years to fix, they've got several top 10 players for nothing on the roster now.

Interesting, as in we were pumping up his value if they weren't playing ball on AhChee? Valid theory imo

What would we be looking at pick wise with Sanders? He’s ooc at the end of the season from memory.

It would depend on where the first rounder ends up being, and if he wants to return to Tasmania and he’s using our interest to raise his contract.

In terms of role, you’d hope he’s ready to play consistently in the middle as our in and under clearance specialist, which would allow Dawson and even Soligo to play a bit more outside and use their strengths there.

I'll have a go Kane.
If...
Curtin becomes a first rotation mid.
Then...
Dawson plays the wing (how might this fix transition? ) and Sanders becomes full-time mid.

I can understand that the midfield at the bulldogs is stacked and therefore nobody really knows how good Sanders might become. Given this risk and our likely poor draft hand over the few years along with the compromised tassie draft years, I reckon Sanders is pretty good bet.

We are restricted to players who have links to SA - Sanders isn't from here but his missus or family are (whatever was previously mentioned on here).

Agreed not hot on him either but beggers can't be choosers.

If Sanders stays at the Dogs for an extra year, Tassie picks him up as a free agent the next. At best, the Dogs get a round one pick after their natural pick, which will be pushed out by any father/sons academy and other Tassie free agents before their pick. Could be a pick in the 20s.

Our natural first pick this year is probably slightly better than that, after father/sons academy and free agents. They also get a kid in their system a year earlier.

Suspect our first rounder gets it done.

I don't think NWM is realistic without a top 5 pick as a starting point. Don't see us that low or trading out anyone with decent value. 3 predicted picks 12 and beyond just won't do it, we're no hope and he only wants Port anyway. Any decisions based on preferring him are seriously flawed.

Does that matter though? If he’s out contract there’s nothing at Kilda can do unless they let him walk to the psd

Thats certainly not what Justin Reid thinks. The whole playing with family is 'significantly overstated' according to someone that would actually know, and not just guessing. Much more important is the prospect of success and you would have to be at your pessimistic best to think Power will be consistently placed above us for the next 5 years at least.

That said, Power offered MUCH more money than we did, and Saints ended up matching it

if he was prepared to go via the PSD, as Ah Chee and Dawson were, he would be at Port as we speak. Seems more likely he's of the Rankine mould and wants to not be hanging around all trade fortnight whilst clubs haggle.

What you need to realise is that just because we got Ah Chee via the PSD, doesn't mean it's a viable threat every time. If NWM was in the PSD he'd be taken with the first pick. That club would then just sit on him for a year and trade him contracted for a huge profit. There's no such profit on an Ah Chee, you blow a big frontload for what? A late 2nd/early 3rd. What would be the point? But if you're West Coast and you blow $2m in cap space to buy 2 first rounders, you do it in a heartbeat.

I never said it would and you seem countering a non existent argument.

When teams use the threat of the psd it's always because there is more trade value being held off the table.

if we offer 3 firsts, there's not much more we can do (unless a another play is involved)

St kilda will know that, so from there perspective nothing could be achieved digging in their heels at trade negotiations.

the only play st kilda might have is if they tell him they would only trade him to port (assuming port are in the bottom 8). Perhaps that's what will happen but I think port will be pretty bad during the 2027-2029 period, and giving heap of draft picks for one player is a pretty dumb list strategy in a rebuild.

Also, will NWM be so desperate to get home that he's willing to spend the most important part of his career at a bottom 6 team?
