That’s because he’s coming back from injury.
Be like us saying we don’t trust soligo as a full time mid?
JHF has played many full mid games. (With a short rest up forward)
When we play Port Adelaide, I only worry about Butters & JHF in their midfield... & Geogiades up forward.

Would be very happy if JHF fell out with Carr & wanted to join us.

There may not be many Scott Pendleburys doing it at 38, but I think we'll see a lot more doing it til 35.
I dunno, I think it will still be just the exceptional players that reach that age.

Right now there's just three 35 year old or turning 35 years old midfielders in the league. Pendlebury, Dangerfield and Sidebottom. At 34 we also have Prestia, Parker and Liberatore.

Even of the 33 year olds I reckon only Neale is any chance of being reasonable at 35.

We'd have to get very lucky

Why sign for 2 years in 2025 and not 10?
Tasmania capital my friend, playing the long game, it's smart business. His 2mill will likely get to 2.3-2.5 in 2027 when he is out of contract.

Regardless if he is a Crow or not, even less chance of being at Port.

Why 2? Because he wants to come home and Port couldn't get a deal done. He signed short term so he can get to Port end of next year.

How does Port accumulate the collateral though, with what look to be at least 4 top end talented draftees available possibly more in the next 2 years via F/S and NGA. Butters the only real top end chip they have to play. Georgiades and Bergman aren't going to get them anything like Butters collateral if they choose to up stumps. Do you seriously believe JHF would leave Port?

Whatever they have, it'll be more than they were taking to the discussion last year.

reid thought some of the key issues re his decision would involve:

  • quiet introverted kid not naturally loving melbourne life
  • family oriented with a very strong natural pull back to sa

therefore deciding to come back to sa at some point is a likely outcome. last year was very close hence the drawn out process and his ultimate decision.

re decision on power vs crows:

  • the media is materially over-stating his wish to play with family/close friends
  • nas is his own independent man
  • future PROJECTED SUCCESS was important to him. assuming saints AND power both miss finals this year and next, we are very likely a clear #1 choice in this regard
  • $, like virtually all players, is important and we were a clear 3rd in our offer to nas

now most likely scenario for ANY player contracted until 6 years into career is they likely get to a FA (as a minimum ) with their existing club. same as curtin for us.

if you want to tell yourself we will never have any chance then thats fine but its different to what people that actually matter(ed) within the club believed

They were wrong.

I reckon Power are a bottom 2-3 team in 2027 and 2028, esp with their best player gone this year.

And then

End of 2027 definitely losing Berg and more than likely Georgie they could conceivably end up with first round compo picks for both FA meaning natural pick say 2 and then 3 and 4 as compo - which will be stacks for all their young FS / Academy players

But wait theres more

The AFL has mentioned changing FA compo so just enough time for them to screw Power over (again) next year by ensuring no FA compo in top 10 picks (which has been mooted somewhere recently) to disincentivise losing teams tanking and allowing FA to walk out for top 5-10 compo (so many examples in recent yrs)

Feel like a small forward would be a handy inclusion at the mid year draft if there are any floating about. With Rankine and Rachele pushing up the field more, feel we're lacking a genuine small crumbing forward.

That said, not sure the likelyhood of getting this position in the mid year draft.

I’m 39 and still doing it

so power will have enough first rounders for:

  • pilot (projected top 5-10 pick iirc needing at least one first rounder if top 5)
  • salopek (first round)
  • and likely rodan (around the mark of first round)
  • and 3 x firsts for saints to get nwm

so they are going to magically need to obtain 6 first rounders next year. id like to see that

with current known knowns, they are in a much WORSE position to trade for nwm at the end of 2027 relative to end of 2025. blind freddy can see that

If St Kilda are trending upwards over the next 2 years, NWM likely extends.

He had the chance last year to come to either AFC or the Power and he chose the Saints.

If things don't go well there, then we'll be in the discussion again in '27.

He had no hope of getting to Port last year outside of running the gauntlet in a draft. And he wasn’t prepared to do that, so he signed short term. Put your thinking cap on and tell me how many under 25 year old elite level players have signed 2 year deals in the last decade and more? Then ask yourself why Nas is the only one.

Here’s a hint, it’s got nothing to do with staying at Saints long term, that was already on the table. As was a long term offer from us and our 2 first round draft picks. As was an offer from Port and their 1 first round pick. I’m ignoring Tassie polluted draft. Saints weren’t accepting that and the Nas management made it clear he wasn’t risking a draft.

He’ll try to get to Port again, but they are going to need to pay up, or tank for PSD 1.

We're seeing this change everywhere in world sport, though. The career lengths for professional sportsmen is growing everywhere.

I guess we'll see, but Merrett seems to both have a game style and general fitness that would make him more likely than most.

When did he first try?

He still has the option of signing long term depending on how ''26 and '27 goes Bayside.

He'll see how things go and then possibly look at AFC and the Power next year.

For now he has $4 million across '26 and '27.
