Maybe. Not that many clubs are running with a tagger - though it seems to be getting more common. I guess even fewer are running with taggers who dont have the talent to be a midfielder themselves, which is I suppose why we've tried to use players like Peatling.

I don't hate the idea of Bond as a tagger, though I dont really rate him as a footballer.' I think he makes too many errors. I wouldnt necessarily have him on our list after this year.
It’s Nicks with his pigeon hole mentality

Not many teams get smashed in the midfield like we do every week.

My only comment on that, we don’t have a ready replacement as a back pocket. Laird only has a few years left and Ryan, not that he’s a typical back pocket and is unknown because he hasn’t had an opportunity.

Remember when we had Roo, Macca, Edwards and Goodwin as our core of midfielders?

And we still didn't win a premiership.
Because we didn't have a forward line.

That period was the reverse of today - great midfield, no forwards; today we have great forwards but no midfield.

Teams need both a midfield and a forward line to win a premiership.

Roo and Macca were guns at AFL level when they were 19. Edwards and Goodwin were guns by early 20's but in Edwards case also started playing at 18. We had a good recruiting time during the 90's. One good thing that Shaw did. They were also all critical in our flags. We havent had such luck recruiting young guns since then that a good enough to play straight away other than Danger.

Watch some of Hughey's draft highlights, that bone breaking bump at the 13 second mark and some of his take no prisoners bone crunching tackles. Why not give him a run on ball when all else fails.

See the guy who kicked 8.... he didnt play much after that.
Haha I was thinking the same, what could/might have been but for Trent's tragic injury.

Do you know if he's still employed at the Power?

I just don’t get why Nicks is so reluctant to give guys a go in a positions they are familiar with

Last I heard, he was employed by the Woodville West Torrens Football Club. I think that was after his time with the Power.

No idea what he’s doing now.

I dunno.

I remember us kicking 30 goals in a match. A team with no forward line doesnt do that.

If you put RT into that 2005/2006 teams we would have won a flag. There was endless discussion during that period on trying to find a the missing key forward piece, it's why we recruited Wayne Carey in 2003.

You need quality players across the park, you can't win a flag with 3 blue chip midfielders and not much else.

Ian Perrie and Scott Welsh disagree

Welsh was a really handy third tall, but he spent most of his career as our key forward.
Perrie was ok as well. The big problem was the secondary instruction to get the football to a person closer to goal

Instead of taking shots from 45-55 they looked for the closer option

Hugh Bond was a midfielder for the GWV Rebels for his 2 seasons in the Victorian U18's competition and only ever played the 4 games as a small/medium defender for Vic Country at the Nationals. Why he hasn't been given a "cooler" role in the midfield when an oppo player is well and truly off the chain amazes me. i.e. Lachie Neale on the weekend.

Why not give him a tagging role on one of JHF or Butters this week, he has elite endurance to run with either all day and he is definitely not a plodder speed wise that someone referred to him as on here today. Hugh has all the tools to be a very good "cooler".

Taken from Rookie Me's draft profile.

SNAPSHOT: “A ferociously competitive ball winner who runs hard and makes his presence felt going both ways.”

There are few harder and more physical competitors among this year’s crop of midfielders than Hugh Bond, a talented multi-sport athlete out of the Greater Western Victoria Rebels region.

A rower at the national level, Bond has put his focus into footy of late, and overcame seperate injuries both last year and in preseason to produce a solid top-age campaign. He turned out 12 times for the Rebels this season, earning Vic Country selection and stepping up in big games.

Bond’s move to defence while donning representative colours only boosted his stocks, with the on-baller’s desire to hunt both the opposition and ball translating well to his role behind the ball. With his strong physique and running capacity, there is plenty to like.

He has been.

He tagged Zach Merrett in the Ben Keays legacy game in 2024, and Merrett put up 30d, 8 clearances, 1g and 5 coaches votes. Don't get me wrong he had a crack, but he is not the answer to our overly dour midfield woes at the moment.

Bond issue right now is not the defensive side of the game, it's that he can't hit the 5 short 15m kicks he needs to across a game of football without turning one over for an instant goal.

Gettable saying that Keane might look to move again. Dogs a chance? Plus Bailey wants to stay but needs more cash. Could be a shocker of an offseason. Happy to let Keane leave if we keep butts and get overs for him. Just they won’t be able to pay overs if they take on Butters.

If there is any truth to the story that Lachie Neale might consider moving back to SA, we would be crazy not to throw our hat in the ring. He would fit so well in our team.

I'm wondering then, with him and Bailey, what the cost would be.
I imagine that Brisbane aren't going to ask for much for Lachie. They have already said they won't stand in his way.

Bailey is a restricted free agent, so they might be willing to match and force a trade (although I have no idea how they could afford to match a decent offer).

Or, could we get a bit clever in our dealing with Brisbane. We could make a strong offer for Lachie, such that they don't match for Bailey.
Brisbane get more for Lachie than elsewhere, and compensation for Bailey.

Could work?

If Keane was to leave, I would want All Australian level compensation. We have seen this year how important he is.

Neale just smacked our team this week, so clearly he'd be our best mid.

Will he crack on though, or is he in decline? Will he decline to the point where he's not that good? Probably not, I'd say he's worth it on a short deal.

Your chance of getting that would be nearly 0%

Coming off a horror of a busted ankle, it remains to be seen if he comes back the same player.
