List of 2017 Free Agents (Updated list in OP)

🥰 Love BigFooty? Join now for free.

I haven't updated the OP in a while but if the AFLPA get their way later this year by reducing the amount of years required to become a free agent from 8 to 6 then these then the Gold Coast and GWS stand to lose the most out of the situation:

Gold Coast
Jarrod Harbrow - Restricted (7 years)
Brandon Matera - Restricted (7 years)
Steven May - Restricted (7 years)
Trent McKenzie - Restricted (7 years)
Michael Rischitelli - Restricted (7 years)
Henry Schade - Restricted (6 years)
Matt Shaw - Restricted (7 years)
Davis Swallow - Restricted (7 years)

Greater Western Sydney
Stephen Coniglio - Restricted (6 years)
Will Hoskin-Elliott - Restricted (6 years)
Adam Kennedy - Restricted (6 years)
Rhys Palmer - Restricted (6 years)
Jonathan Patton - Restricted (6 years)
Tom Scully - Restricted (6 years)
Dylan Shiel - Restricted (6 years)
Devon Smith - Restricted (6 years)

The AFL may turn down the idea just purely based on the potential damage it could do to the new expansion clubs.
Any further news as to whether AFL will shorten the requirement? Given most of the conversations start around this time of year for next years trade period, would be good to have a full list of 2017 free agents

The sneaking suspicion is the AFL aren't huge on FA now. Suspect that it won't shift.

OP updated. Recruiters are going to be licking their lips with the likes of Nat Fyfe, Dustin Martin, Josh Kennedy (Swans), Tom Rockliff, David Zaharakis, Luke Breust, Sam Reid and Steven Motlop all becoming free agents. It does seem we could be seeing the emergence of a new thought process when it comes to free agents as a lot of these guys have already been discussed as potentially being traded 12 months out from their contract expiring. The idea being that you can gain more by trading a year out as opposed to receiving the compensation the AFL will provide when/if these players leave through the avenue of free agency.

The Swans are going to have a really tough time retaining all their players. We know they're already feeling the pinch cap-wise this year and they've got Kennedy, Reid and Rohan all becoming free agents next year. On top of that, Issac Heeney is off contract next year and he'll obviously be receiving a considerable pay rise. Tippett and Buddy's money are locked in for 2017 and 2018 so this is going to becoming increasingly difficult for the Swans to keep all their players.

So somebodys going to offer Kennedy a ridiculous amount just before he turns 30?

With the way he played in the first half of the grand final I wouldn't be surprised to see someone throwing big money at him next year. Throwing a 3-year contract at a 29-year-old isn't a terrible move when he's peaking.
Jamison retired..
Good pick up. OP updated.

More evidence emerged on Wednesday that the Swans are struggling cap wise with Heeney contract talks yet to begin. Without being in control of the COLA we finally see the Swans under the pump when trying to retain all these guys and I'm sure many fans are going to be happy to see Sydney slowly picked apart as the Buddy deal continues to wreak havoc on their list.

*facepalm*

So what's Buddy getting paid now? Must be up to $5mil a season based on how many players are supposedly being squeezed out by his contract. Or perhaps it's just lazy analysis..

Heeney is contracted next year and will re-sign with the club. Same as Parker, Rohan, Hannebery etc all did.

The delays in contract talks are due to the clubs not knowing the official TPP amounts for the next 5 years. Once the CBA is finalised all clubs will start locking away these players.

For the first time in their history, the Gold Coast Suns will have to deal with free agency in 2017.

Anyone know who from the Giants list becomes a free agent in 2018?
Probably none of them tbh. The only reason the Gold Coast's Rory Thompson is a free agent in 2017 is because he was draft eligible in 2008 but chose to join the Suns instead. He went on to play for the Suns in both the TAC Cup and VFL in his first two seasons with the club, which counts purely because he was draft eligible before that. So unless there is a GWS player from the TAC Cup/NEAFL days that still remains on the list (or unless they change the rules), there won't be any FAs at GWS until at least 2019.

If a guy like Josh Bruce was still with GWS and was coming out of contract in 2018 then he would become a free agent. It's actually interesting looking back through the GWS TAC Cup team in 2010. Names included Jed Anderson (North), Josh Bruce (St Kilda), Michael Hartley (Essendon), Will Langford (Hawthorn) and Jarrod Witts (Gold Coast).

As for 2019, Coniglio and Haynes are already set for free agency then.

Restricted FA is 8 years and top 25% of salary? hard to believe Jack Trengove fits the latter since he just signed a 1 year deal - suspect he'll be UFA.

We won't know for sure until the AFL releases their official list early next year. In the meantime, I've stuck to 8-9 years being restricted and 10+ being unrestricted.

Interesting times ahead. Rory Thompson being the first Suns free agent ever. Local Southport lad.
Very interesting. I'm sure he'll garner some interest but you'd think the combination of him being a local as well as the Suns having plenty of cap room would keep him on the Gold Coast. Plus, he has always said he wants to stay on the Gold Coast and his dad was a Southport legend so it's the closest thing the club has to a father-son pick for the time being.

Oh no....... Nick Suban is a free agent next year.... We better do all we can to get him to sign on. Whoever that Fyfe dic*head is, he's overrated, and he shouldn't come between us signing Suban. Straight up 500k a year for the champ, hopefully no one else throws a massive offer his way. Hands off subes

Matchu list needs to be updated for Geelong for Josh Cowan who will be probably a UFA (would be outside the top 25 % of pay scale I expect). Mackie is definitely UFA and Motlop is definitely RFA (given what salary he is on) and Menzel will be either RFA or UFA depending on the exact $$ in his contract.

The AFL usually releases a list every January that details the status of each free agent for that year. When that comes out I'll update the list. For the time being, I've stuck with 8-9 years restricted and 10+ years unrestricted.
