I was wondering if anyone had a list of the fonts used in each teams logo. I'm trying to edit some logos for some teams in my league and most of the teams use past afl team logos and I want to update them but for the town name on the logo I need the font of each team.

Re: Logo Fonts?

Most of them would be commercial fonts so it's going to be hard to track them down, unless you're handy with BitTorrent. I've managed to identify a couple:

Marvin is used in the old 1975 shield logos. There's a variant called Marbold which you can find online, e.g. dafont.com

Dynamo is the font used by the West Coast Eagles from 1987 to 1999. I found a variant called Nougat which will do the job for you, also on dafont.

Greater Western Sydney use one called Stratum 2.

I'll run a few logos through WhatTheFont and see what more I can find out, record them in a list and share.

Re: Logo Fonts?

Here's a few more:

Adelaide - 1991 logo looks like Century Gothic or possibly Futura Light.
1999-2010 logo is Futura Extra Bold, but with little serifs added to the top.

Brisbane Bears - 1994 logo "BEARS" text in Impact.
Can't identify the "Brisbane" script used from 1994 to 2010, seems to be custom.
Brisbane Lions - 2010, font is Friz Quadrata. This is also used by KFC.

Carlton's late 1990s logo, harking back to 1955, has their motto on a scroll. The font used is Souvenir.

The current Western Bulldogs logo features text in Gill Sans Extra Bold. (Don't use Gill Sans Ultra Bold as it's not a perfect match.)

Several teams seem to use Helvetica - Carlton, Collingwood, Footscray's 1995 logo (from what I've checked so far), and probably Freo's old logos.

Geelong's GFC shield appears to be Times New Roman at the top. Disappointed that I couldn't find a good match for the GFC monogram though.

Now to find the Dockers font... :)

Re: Logo Fonts?

Gave me something to do this evening... trawling through a few more logo fonts. Didn't feel like I got a lot, but I got a few.

Melbourne -1989 logo, "MELBOURNE" text is British Inserat. In a pinch use Impact.

North Melbourne's current logo - uses Akzidenz-Grotesk.

Port Adelaide's current logo - Diamante Extra Bold.

Richmond's is Plantin Semibold. Always good to identify a Serif font like that :)

St Kilda's is Futura Heavy (for St. K. F. C.)

Sydney uses Futura Bold Condensed. Futura is a great font family, has a lot of variations and uses.

Strangely I couldn't identify West Coast's fonts, the main one was difficult. The smaller one is probably just Helvetica though.

Re: Logo Fonts?

Mods, Perhaps we could sticky this thread.
This is an excellent resource.

And if we can find the Fonts used for all of the teams we can have a guide

Re: Logo Fonts?

Thought I should bump this thread because it might be a good resource for some people, and also in case there have been any updates or anybody wants to add the fonts of any logos that aren't necessarily from an AFL team's logo.

Re: Logo Fonts?

A list of the names of the fonts was created on the Team Ladder Logo thread. All clubs expect for Adelaide were found.

Re: Logo Fonts?

From WW's thread:

Adelaide - Not a font, Customised for them or heavily edited text.
Brisbane - ITC Friz Quadrata Bold.
Carlton - Version of Helvetica, the R in Carlton is Arial.
Collingwood - Helvetica.
Essendon -Edited version of Agency Gothic Bold.
Fremantle - Grotesque Bold (1994).
Geelong - Newtext.
Gold Coast - Edited version of Stadion Expert.
Greater Western Sydney - Stratum.
Hawthorn - A revised Helvetica Black.
Melbourne - Jaeger Daily News Extra Bold, but then they've changed each of the serifs.
North Melbourne - Akzidenz-Grotesk BQ Bold Condensed Alt.
Port Adelaide - Machine.
Richmond - Arno Pro Bold Caption.
St.Kilda - Helvetica.
Sydney - Futura Condensed Bold.
West Coast - Large letters (W & T) are Agenda, the small letters are Fritz Quadrata.
Western Bulldogs - Gill Sans Extra Bold.
AFL - Edited version of Ol Smokler-Bold.

Re: Logo Fonts?

Actually I'd like to point out that THIS thread is the older of the two - the other was hijacked by font discussion.

Re: Logo Fonts?

Not a logo font but the majority of the past 3 years' AFL Record article titles and Gameday section was typeset in Ronnia and AFL Match Centre (2009-2010) (please be brought back) was typeset in Etelka.

Still wondering what they used from 2006-2008.

Re: Logo Fonts?

The other thread that is spoken of here, the discussion of fonts was introduced when discussing my team ladder logos. All the recent talk on that thread has mostly been on what club has what font. I rather pass all talk about fonts of club logos over to this thread so that all discussion is kept to one thread and the thread talks about what the title is.

When creating this list could information on where to gain these fonts be also included. As most people on this part of this site, the Footy Graphic Design section, would like to use the fonts, being able to obtain the fonts and preferrably for free would be good.

Re: Logo Fonts?

The issue with most of the fonts available is that they are commercial. I'm pretty sure BigFooty admin wouldn't like people posting links to copyrighted content which legally shouldn't be freely available.

Linking to sites where fonts can be *purchased*, that'd be OK...

As I've said a few times before, to anyone wanting to do design like this, or maybe into desktop publishing... check out computer stores, newsagents, Reject Shop etc... you can find Fonts packages for up to $20 which come with hundreds of fonts, many of them are licensed or they're similar in name (e.g. Eras = Eraser, Bauhaus = Baha, Friz Quadrata = Fritz Kat). Adobe also bundles fonts with Photoshop.

Re: Logo Fonts?

I'm not asking for people to put up the sites where you have to purchase fonts. There are fonts that look like those that are used that are free. If these are found by one person won't it be good that we all share the font, and hopefully we will have 18 occassions where this happens and we will have fonts for every club.

If this could be provided, we will be happy. It is something extra for Footy Graphic Designers to use in their designs.

Anyone know the font of the year (2011) in the logo below?

Can't get an accurate definition - Parachute PF Din Text is the closest.
