The 2007 season has come to an abrupt end for Essendon’s Sam Lonergan after straining the medial ligament in his right knee on the weekend
The injury couldn’t have come at a worse time for Lonergan who was a chance to join the senior team on their trip to Perth to play Fremantle this Sunday.
Essendon high performance manager, John Quinn, said that Lonergan does not require surgery on the strain and has already begun his rehabilitation which should see him fully fit by the end of September.
"He has got a grade two strain which means the recovery will take about six weeks minimum but more likely eight weeks," Quinn explained.
"He is currently immobilised in a device that locks the knee in place and he will be like that for about a week and then for the next two to three weeks he will be in a movable support.
"But in the meantime he will be doing a lot of physio work and strengthening up the muscle around it and making sure it doesn’t deteriorate."
Meanwhile Leroy Jetta is a possible starter for this weekend’s match against the Dockers should he make it through training on Wednesday, while James Hird remains one week away.
"We will keep Hirdy for one more week," Quinn said.
"He trained really well this morning and he is running at full speed but we still have to work on things like acceleration and changing direction and he hasn’t kicked a footy much.
"I would expect him to resume full training early next week and he will be a certain starter – barring anything else happening – against Carlton."
Jason Laycock has had stiches to his eye after copping a boot to his face in last Sunday's match against Hawthorn and has been cleared to play this weekend.
