Being a Blues board, I already have a pretty good idea of what the answers will be, but I'll ask the question anyway. Back in 2005 with the #1 pick, we got Marc Murphy. After him came Dale Thomas, and later Scott Pendlebury. Since then, Murphy has developed into an absolute star for us, with some people rating him equal with Judd as our best player this season. On the other hand, some are naming Thomas as the best player in the AFL, and Pendlebury isn't far behind.

So the question is, if you could get a chance to re-do the 2005 AFL Draft, who would you take at #1?

Been done on every other board, I suggest you use the search function.

FWIW I doubt any Carlton supporter would swap Murphy, likewise with Pies fans.

Absolutely wouldn't change a thing about our selection, Murph is an elite player and has been playing good footy for the last 3 years

Would be interesting to know if we took Pendlebury at pick 4 instead of Kennedy whether or not he would have been involved in a trade for Judd.

Hindsight is a great thing but I don't think we have done anything wrong

As has already been said, has been done to death. SO, let's have a laugh at the 2003 draft. The top 20 were:

1 Adam Cooney
2 Andrew Walker
3 Colin Sylvia
4 Farren Ray
5 Brock McLean
6 Kepler Bradley
7 Kane Tenace
8 Raphael Clarke
9 David Trotter
10 Ryley Dunn
11 Beau Waters
12 Ryan Murphy
13 Brent Stanton
14 Fergus Watts
15 Troy Chaplin
16 Josh Willoughby
17 Billy Morrison
18 Llane Spaanderman
19 David Mundy
20 Sam Butler

Sorry, I didn't realize that this had already been talked about around here before. My bad. I guess you're probably right in that Blues fans wouldn't trade Murphy, and Pies fans wouldn't trade Thomas and Pendlebury. It would be interesting to be able to see if we had taken Thomas or Pendlebury at #1, if we would now be happy with our selection.

Last year I might have had Pendlebury slightly in front. This year solidifies the fact that Murph was the right choice.

Murphy vs Pendlebury:

Both outstanding players, probably at around the same level this year. Both teams would be happy with their selections, neither carlton nor collingwood would change their picks if they could re-do the 2005 draft I would think.

Ellis lol!
<Collingwood supporter>Superstar because he's a premiership player.</Collingwood supporter>

No draw either.

Selecting a midfielder, power KPF and CHB who would still be best 22 players was a great draft for the Blues.

Cook, Stanley and even Anthony didn't work out.

As drafts go it was a bit of a steamer wan't it?

Mundy is the standout performer at this point in time, followed by Cooney and the trio of unfulfilled potential in Stanton Sylia and Walker. Needless to say AW doing a bit to change his legacy this year.

#1s in the draft often don't have any more "potential" than anyone else in the first round, but they tend to be "safe bets".

Murphy was a safe bet/can't miss and has steadily built into a freakin' star. He is tearing it up this year, and the buzz around him is still behind the actual level he's playing at.

The Pies clearly smashed the draft, double-dipping and getting Thomas and Pendles. Pendlebury is *probably* the pick of the draft, but it's marginal. Thomas has been a bit more of a slow burner, showing the flashy stuff and more recently adding the consistently. He's a rung below Murphy and Pendlebury to me, though. If Pendlebury is better than Murphy, it's absolutely line-ball and not enough to suggest anyone made a mistake.

There hasn't been a draft in the history of sports anywhere where it turned out that the players picked 1-10 had careers that would ranked exactly the same 1-10 in retrospect.

I would argue most important thing with high draft picks is not to end up having the best player, but make sure you don't miss out! The exact order a re-draft would happen in doesn't matter very much, but you do NOT want to be left holding the Tambling/Fiora/Livingstone disaster of your given draft year.

That was just Lyon putting the pressure on Thomas, which he cracked under MASSIVELY (thus why he isn't playing this weekend). Didn't Lyon also talk up Essendon as a top 4 threat after their rd 3 loss ??? He will spin anything to put another club/player off their game/cover his own ass ............

Thomas is a fantastic player. But he's probably 3rd or 4th best on his team, in my opinion (behind Pendlebury, Swan and Cloke).

Which would make it tough for him to be the best in the league cos there are 16 other clubs with some pretty handy players. We have.... 2 better than him.

Whatev. That story will die away, because nobody actually agrees with Lyon's suggestion on close inspection (which, as you say, put the spotlight on him).
