AFL Autopsy Loss to the Hawkes

Can’t fault that effort level. That’ll win us games throughout the year.
But we can’t be going to ground as easily as we did, we can’t continue to fumble as much as we did and we have to stop giving up goals straight after we kick one.

Langford & Ridley out next week is going to be brutal, but if we’re serious about playing the kids, Edwards & Hayes come in.

Not prepared to throw the baby out with the bath water on this. They’re a quality side, we just have to learn from it next week

Honestly hawks are up and about, we kept it close and fought till the end. The were cleaner and executed better.

With our effort tonight we beat a lot of teams.

We are fielding a super young team and we have gonna have plenty of ups and downs this year.

I’m worried about Langford hammy and can’t see us kicking enough goals in the next few games.

Takeaways
McGrath, Prior and Shiel in the backline along with 3 talks is a recipe for failure.
Second half looked much better and if we can play that way consistently we're in with a chance of winning more than we lose
Hawks look good in their first 2 games, but the umpiring in the second half stopped us from seeing if we could take it up to them and win with a closer scoreline.

VC should never have been given to McGrath. Plays like a guy who knows he's getting games week in week out, without playing up to team standards (his defensive running killed us multiple times tonight)

Scott butchered the sub. Looked way better structurally in the second half

We are young and the skill errors were shocking but they still had a crack and played it out.
But, a lot is left to a few. Caldwell outstanding

A few players on big money need to be hit square between the eyes, how are we meant to teach the next generation if they’re the ones playing like first years.

cant really knock the effort, but the skills just arent there, and the decision making from the backline is comical
Well said, Hawthorn just so much cleaner with ball in hand and positioning.

Well, at least we made Carlton supporters feel a bit better tonight..

Gresham should never have been sub. Looked much better in the second half.

Prior depth only. Straight to the VFL next week. Can't have that in the side.

McGrath and Shiel cannot play in the same backline. Can't keep their feet and aren't good kicks/decision makers.

We cannot overlook the fact that we need good ball users and runners coming out of defence.

The midfield led by Caldwell was pretty good. Harry Jones was also good.

I’m happier to see this from the side we put up rather than a side with Stringer Heppell and others, we were pretty rubbish but a couple goals closer without the rubbish umps. How McGrath held onto VC in off season is beyond me, don’t rate him but maybe if he just worked on his game without the VC might be a lot better for him

People were paid money to come up with that idea, just think on that.

Thought we were rusty first quarter apart from about 15-20 mins were were competitive for rest of the game. Especially playing second half without Ridley although I thought Gresham was good when he came on.

Some good signs from some of the young boys.

Went about as expected. Hawkes just a little quicker, a little bigger, little more experienced and a little more skilled across the ground.
We arr our own worst enemy a lot of the time, and that was compounded by the Hawkes being a week ahead. Yes, it's not a huge deal, but them being into their season while we were watching storm clouds does make a difference.
Losing 2 pretty important players in Langford and Ridley didn't help, and with Prior looking lost we were basically 3 down.

I thought the forward mix was wrong early and looked much better with Gresham on (and a half of real footy played)

Merrett, Caldwell, Durham, Kakko, Jones and Durrsma were good. Gresham was good after coming on, the ruck duo was alright. Roberts solid too.

Redman is a backman. You can't have McGrath and Shiel playing the same role when neither can kick.
Tsatas pretty disappointing after a good pre season.

Always tough to get a reac on the first game, but some positives and lots of improvements.

Umpires were below standard, and the standard ain't that high to begin with...
