Is anyone else confused by this thread?

No not at all. He is talking about Port Magpies and Cupido has just been signed by them. I hope Hargy doesn't go there though, couldn't hate him though as i never bagged Ebel.

On the defensive side of things, i see Baird has left for another Port... Port Melbourne.

Baird is a big loss. Looks like Morrison may move to CHB full time.

As i said somewhere else, I dunno if we can sustain a Cupido & Clive forward line for the whole year. I can see us kicking 30 goals one week and then 4-5 the next. Tim would want to get Cupido in shape as well. People thought Dew was overweight. These people obviously didnt see Cupido this year.

Disappointed to hear about Baird and surprised by the Cupido rumour, if it's true. I'd have thought he's too similar to Clive anyway (mind you, Clive's maybe good for half a season at best by now). Do they have something against getting a 194cm key forward at Port? I heard they were chasing Daniel Batson, a 202cm ruckman who was dropped off Carlton's rookie list.

Baird is a big loss - our defence fell away as the year went on - the game at the Parade where we whipped Norwood had a half-back line of Eichner, Baird, J Clayton and last line of M Clayton, Achee & Fitzgerald IIRC - virtually impassable!

Losing Eichner in the state game was such a big blow last year and now Baird gone? :( Morrison is a hack, IMO

I agree about Morrison. At the moment we have no other option, unless we play M Clayton there again which isnt a prefered option. We drastically lack KPP depth unless a couple of the reserves guys raise a couple of levels

Who have you got in mind?

Catterall, Taylor, Pepe?

Taylor and Hall looked potentially decent whilst Caterall looked good out of FF as well. Maybe Casey Thomas can find something extra and push for senior selection

Just for those of us who know nothing about SANFL: Are all the players absolute free agents? Just individual contracts at will? Or are the clubs/players constrained by AFL-like salary caps, list limits, drafts, etc?

It's pretty much free-agency (bound by contracts). Except for the mini draft held for players joining the Power or the camries from interstate. Players aligned to a SANFL club (even by former association) are aligned back to their club of origin (eg Daniel Motlop to North Adelaide).

There is a salary cap (requirement brought in at the request of the AFL to secure AFL funding) which is reasonably well enforced - although there have been question marks and a couple of clubs - Centrals and South - have been found guilty in previous seasons of tampering. Mind you, the penalties have been fairly nominal. Fines only have been imposed to date.

The only draft is the SANFL mini draft which is to distribute the interstate players Port and Crows have picked up. Pretty sure its done from 9th to 1st like the AFL. Every club doesnt neccesarily get a pick.

There is no list limit. Players have gone from U19s to seniors before...even U17s to seniors before.

There is a salary cap. Not sure of what it is but its around 350k or so. Its widely considered that not many clubs actually follow the salary cap.

There is no set trade week. There arent a lot of actual trades like the AFL does it. Mostly uncontracted players moving to other clubs, or contracted players being cleared to another club for money. There are clearance fees etc.

Yeah they may have looked good against Norwood but think about the opposition? They aren't much chop.

Baird will leave a bit of a hole at Alberton, and you would be stupid to sign Cupido. He is overweight and lazy. You already have one of those types in your forward lines ;)

Correct about the mini draft. Sometimes if the AFL clubs only sign 7 players (they might sign players who were already tied to an SANFL club they played at before they were drafted) so not every club gets a player.
There is a cut off date for trades which is after the season starts i believe. The salary cap is set to be expanded next season isn't it? That can only be a good thing.

Edit: sorry Senor Fairlane already mentioned the bit about players being tied to SANFL clubs. He can take the kudos!

Atleast Cupido can still kick straight, unlike Waterhouse. But with Cupido's signing and possibly Hargraves (as reported here), we will have a very good forward line. We can keep Jeremy in the mid-field to get the ball up to the 3 big guys.
