Knowing that over 70% off donation to the Red Cross go into paying wages if i were to donate 10 bucks then id be buying one cup of water...

In my opinion Red Cross are causing more problems then solving. They dont use the donations efficiently enough and in the end are just wasting peoples money and making very little contribution. If donations were sent to the govt then all of the donations could go towards providing aid rather then a tiny fraction of it, and a better job of providing aid could be done.

I hardly see it as selfish, intelligent thinking more like it. If people thought more about it then theyd agree it is the way to go. Just cos i want things to be done better doesnt make me a bad person. I reckon if govt took 20 bucks tax of everyone to fund aid no one wud disagree, and it wud be the best way of doing things.

Some people on this board are just impossible to describe, actually, some are a bunch of ****** tight A****ES.

Spare us your pathetic tax excuses.

There's something called a conscience, and there's also something called karma.

They'll find you.

I can't believe some of the people on here are human.
I give to worthy causes, for sure. I just feel this is something better served by Government intervention.

70% on wages? 10% going to actual victims? Where are these figures coming from? I thought that by law charity organisations were allowed (and expected) to spend 10% of donations on administration etc. The big problem with the red cross/bali bombing thing was that the red cross decided to redirect the money given to that appeal to other projects, and people were upset because that's not what they donated for.

Anyway, a question for those promoting the red cross for donating. There are those who are uncomfortable donating to the red cross for various reasons. Are you aware of any other well respected charities that they could donate to if they wish?

Australia is not a humanitarian nation, simple as that.

Its a sad fact that so many people don't give a rats about anyone other than themselves, but the rest of us can't change them, so getting worked up in this thread is pointless.

Actually, what I got from what what he wrote was that he couldn't afford to make a donation....certainly not that people had to die.

I think the problem is people see what happened with the Bali appeal and what Red Cross did with the money there and are cynical about whether their money really does make it to these people. Yes you can give to other organisations.... but rightly or wrongly you tend to tar them with the same brush.... The only thing I would donate to the Red Cross is blood.

Or you can wait and later sponsor a child with World Vision which will be needed. After visting the kiddie my wife and daughter sponsor, I myself would have no problems with this mob. Visited and seeing the work they done with the villagers hygiene has changed my veiws arse about. And these poor buggas will need help for many years.

Just another case of pass the buck onto someone else hey? Let the government do it. No need for the everday layperson to exert themselves to help out fellow human beings.
What are you talking about? So you physically handing the money to the Red Cross and getting them to it is different from the government getting it out of your pay? I think getting a charity to do stuff for you is passing the buck.

Get off the moral high ground, unless you're actually getting on a plane to go help then you have no right to be so self rightgeous. Moron.

Well I can see where you get the 'angry' part of your name.

Getting on a plane and going there when you don't posses the required skills and abilities to be of help there is moronic. Being self righteous doesn't come into it. Human compassion is what it's about.

When you think of all the millions spent on rescuing upper-class beardies who go mountaineering or yachting, then spending 10's of millions to rescue 1000's of normal people on SE Asian Contiki tours seems reasonable. And to help out the locals - of course you're gonna do that. Oh well. I sent them my NYE money, with a bit of luck, it might save one or two lives. I'll have to be a cheap drunk instead.

I am sending my donation online today to the Red Cross and lined up fortnightly direct debits from my bank account.

Here is a webpage which has an adress of a school to actually send items to.
The Maldives apparently are in all sorts of problems, due to the fact that they have a water storage probelm due to the shifting of the islands due to the earthquake. The damage is more than their GNP for the year, they are struggling.

The tourists there are lucky becasue they are able to get out of there. I feel sorry for the locals. They have nothing. Most of the countries they live in do not offer any aid at all. Sponsoring a child or anyone living in one of those countries via World Vision is a good idea.
