The form of this young fella in 2011 has stood out like a beacon. He has gone from being considered by many as an also ran to quite possibly one of the best young defenders going around. Whats impressed me massively is his approach ....STRAIGHT down the line...captain blood would have been so PROUD...People stop me in the street to comment just how brave he is. With a new leadership team brewing, underline it with a class act in Rancer...just do it:thumbsu:

He needs 1-2 more years as the class clown first...lol. How can anyone take him serious after his trip back from Sydney on the bus.

wait til he is consistently good until you give him that sort of title.

its like players earning promotion in the 2's.

same with cotch give him another year or so.

No. Not yet.

When DH confessed that he didn't think Rance would make it until yesterday's game, it's a sign that AR is only just starting to win over DH's respect and admiration. However, like what nut said, you can't take him seriously until he becomes less of a joker.

What did Hardwick say??? is there a link?

Maybe it was a matter of interpretation.

Richmond coach Damien Hardwick admitted he had his doubts whether Alex Rance would make the grade at AFL level.

But the 21-year-old son of former Footscray and West Coast player Murray showed that his future appears bright, particularly if he produces performances like he did in the Tigers' 43-point win over Sydney at the MCG on Sunday.

Playing his 41st game, Rance blunted the impact of dual Brownlow Medallist Adam Goodes and found the football 24 times himself to feature among Richmond's best.

Not only that, but Rance acted as the marshall of a defence bolstered by lieutenants Will Thursfield and Jayden Post as the Tigers halted a six-match losing streak in fine style.

A delighted Hardwick acknowledged the Western Australian's contribution to the winning cause post-match.

"We've found a player there (in Alex), there's no doubt," Hardwick said.

"Probably a lot of people had some doubts on Alex, also myself I wasn't quite sure whether he'd fit, but to see the guy compete the way he does against a two-time Brownlow Medallist is outstanding."

Wrong personality

Couldn't be more wrong, he does has a outgoing personality as we have all seen from the roar vision videos. but his leadership has always been talked about since he was drafted even before he came to the club and people who have got in the huddles at Coburg. Watched closely on Sunday and he was directing everyone in the D50 and I have noticed this when I have gone down and had a look at training.
Probably won't get the VC next year but he will be put in the leadership group.

Geeeeee you must be some soft of Celebrity for people to be stopping you in the steet.I'll have to keep an eye out for you in the social pages.lmfao :eek::eek:

Yeah fair enough, I think DH is referring to his appraisal of Rance maybe 12 months ago or so.

And he certainly was marshalling the troops on Sunday. Was even pepping Thursty up, a guy who is a few years his senior. Will be the captain of our last line of defense before long, and I reckon with every bit of confidence his game will go to another level.

Have loved Rancey this year, really top effort by the kid but I would much prefer him to just keep doing his thing. He doesn't need the added pressure that a captains role asks, I simply just want him to keep having these amazing games

I was big fella, i was. Not VC yet, leadership group yes. Martin or Jack to become VC - they are our future, so, with cotch, may as well make it happen.:thumbsu:

rubbish if hardwick applies the hawthorn principals to rance he should still be concerned.
possesion has never been rances problem its the mistakes that are.people should look closely at his game.

i will again put the balls on the line and say its more likely than not that rance will go backwards next yr.
if im wrong i will send 100 dollars to big footy and tugga or rt can send the money on to the ftf.

Rance's problem was always his aerial work, and he's not only fixed that but is excelling in that area. His work with ball in hand isn't good enough to be a permanent HBF, but it's well above average for a full back.

Santa, take your Hawthorn principals and shove em up your clacker :)
Last time I checked, Dimma coaches Richmond.

There is no doubt Rance is somewhat unique. I've not said he is already a superstar, but with his rate of improvement, due to the faith shown in him, he will be a very good KPD very soon IMO.

Most importantly, I think others are starting to walk a little taller around him, thus one of the reasons for this thread, I'm guessing.

I love Rance, and I think his leadership is growing as he acts like more of a General on the backline every week. But he'll have to get in line for the VC spot.

Everyone is assuming Cotch will take over from Newy next year but that is far from a certainty. Most likely Newy keeps the captaincy and Cotch is the obvious VC.

I reckon Deledio merits consideration too. He seems to have picked up a "soft" label that he doesn't really deserve. Last year against Sydney he hyperextended his elbow before half time and looked gone, he came back on with it bandaged up and played his guts out. He was overshadowed by Andy Collins' heroics, but he led from the front that day. If he sticks with us through this GWS fiasco he'll end up playing over 300 games in Yellow and Black. He'll likely never be captain and I reckon he has the right to feel a bit stiff about that.
