Malthouse's good friend and manager made a statement in the Herald Sun a couple of weeks ago that he will be honouring his contract with the Collingwood Football Club. Mick himself has stated in several interviews he will be honouring his contract.

THE debate about Michael Malthouse's football future post-2011 will rage throughout the season, but the latest development suggests it ultimately will be seen to have been a lot of hot air.

Malthouse's long-time manager and close friend, Peter Sidwell, told the Herald Sun yesterday: "The contract will prevail."

Sidwell said all that remained to be determined was to find the most efficient way of maximising the attributes of Nathan Buckley, who will take the senior role at Collingwood from 2012, and Malthouse, who has a three-year contract extension to become director of coaching from next year.

Sidwell and Collingwood president Eddie McGuire have had several conversations, including one meeting, during the past four weeks to try to define the arrangement to operate from next year.

He's just playing games, He's already stated he'll be doing the director of coaching job at Collingwood.

The AFL love the Anzac day game and tradition Collingwood and Essendon have created, there in no hope in hell it will be given to other teams to play at the MCG, seems Fremantle have a tradition playing at home on that day too.

The fact is if they were to chop and change teams to play on Anzac Day there is no tradition and would no doubt risk losing 10,000-15,000 spectators maybe more depending on the teams.

Actually the FIRST ANZAC DAY GAME to DRAW 90k WAS RICHMOND versus Collingwood.

Yes,Richmond's HOME GAME,1977 and in a time when the ANZAC DAY GAME wasn't PROMOTED to the sheisenhouse.

why not carlton, it will just make their rivalry a lot bigger and more money for the afl, why not. with jeane pratt around the club, anything can happen. maybe carlton have a deal already done, that know one knows about.

there are about 6 Clubs who should be hurling money in Malthouse's direction, mine included. You just can't let a 3x Premiership coach get replaced by an ill-thought out succession plan (just because Collingwood didn't want Buckley to end up at North) without making a play for him and think that they have done all their due diligence to ensure the ongoing future of their club.

whether he stays at Collingwood under some BS mentor role or not, Clubs will be derelict in their duty if they weren't chasing a guy who they know won't be a senior coach next year and could well be the reigning babck to back premiership coach.

When this was implemented Malthouse was completing his 10th season without a flag. Plenty inside and out were calling for his head. When the team failed again in September even more said why is he still there?

The new arrangenment was arrived at on that basis, it was a compromise. One of MMs alternatives at the time was to be moved aside for Buckley there and then.

If you had said to MM then what would you like, 2 flags in the next 2 years and go out on a high or no flag and have people saying Buckley should have been installed 2 years ago its an easy choice.

If we dont win a flag this year a lot of wind will disappear from your argument

This has probably been answered elsewhere but does a contract where he has been placed in a Director of Coaching role really prohibit Malthouse from taking an actual coaching role? In the commercial world, that would not stand up under restrain of trade. Why wouldn't it apply in the football world. The only way it would stand up is if Malthouse accepted cash to not coach and then he went and coached anyway. Having Maguire throw bullshit comments around about having a contract mean absolutely nothing...and I'm sure MM knows it.

Not for one moment do I think that it would get ugly between the 2. I think the 2 have too much respect for each other and what they have done to allow it to get to that. But I dare say Eddie should be careful about throwing around too many "tagline" comments and pissing MM off too much.

As other posters have stated, the Pies have got themselves into a peculiar situation but it is one that I would love the Tiges to be in. Good on them for having to sort this out at the end of this year. Hopefully the 2011 flag doesn't go their way before they do sort this out

MM has signed a contract. The 2 year deal as HC, plus the 3 years as Director of Coaching. You don't sign 2 seperate contracts for 2 different roles.

No doubt a club will come sniffing. Ratten AFAIK is a dead man walking at Carlton. I'd expect that Eddie will ensure that club compensates Collingwood to break the binding contract.

..genuine 50/50 proposition with the ol' malty.. .... ..he's on record several times saying he will honour the contract, but always with the same single caveat.. .... ..that both himself, and the club,, are satisfied with what the actual director of coaching role entails.. ..he wants to feel that he is still of some positive use to the club, but he also doesnt want to be standing over Buck's shoulder.. ..quite frankly i think it will be difficult to satisfy MM's need to feel self-worth in the new role and not have him play a direct hand in the way Bucks runs the show..

..because the actual director of coaching role in the contract has yet to be defined.. ..basically thats the dealbreaker, written into the contract by its very absence.. ..if the role doesnt satisfy, he walks..

But the fact is Malthouse is the current coach who has built this fantastic side, and developed this Premiership-winning game-plan (obviously a lot of credit has to go to the recruiting staff and assistant coaches/trainers). It's only fair that he should be able to see his tenure out with this side.

It seems ridiculous that he would have been given the choice to either quit now, or step aside in two years time and take a back-seat no matter how good the side is going. If they wanted him out why not just give him the chop at the time of the agreement?

I obviously haven't taken into the account Buckley was(?) a wanted man and could have been poached by another side if this agreement wasn't struck. I guess that was the deciding factor, Eddie wanted Buckley at the helm eventually and he wouldn't have been ready back then.
