Re: Marcus Allan

Marcus has been described as "ball magnet" at the Lions reserves practice match against Morningside (22 March 2007).
The problem has been that despite being able to pretty consistently get the ball at AFLQ level he hasn't been able to do that yet at AFL level where everything happens a step or two quicker. As I mentioned above the most encouraging thing from the preseason with Marcus has been his crumbing performance against the dogs and with Brown and maybe Charman in the forward line there are likely to be a lot of balls hit the deck for someone with a good eye for the ball. It would be worth giving him a run there I think and he can run through the middle to rest other guys as needed.

Re: Marcus Allan

Tonight I am happy to say Allan took a step forward. Still not on the bandwagon but hey he did some good things. Quick hands. Still needs the physical stature to match it with the opposition players but he is trying and if he can continue to make some solid improvements this year he might start pressing for some regular game time. I may have to take back some of the doubtin comments I have made. There may still be hope for little Marcus

I agree Ashli. He showed some good decision making, and I felt confident when the ball was in his hands.

Re: Marcus Allan

If he was a 10% chance of an AFL career at the beginning of the season, his last game might now raise him to 15%.

20-25% now. I was really impressed with his form on Saturday night. Moving well and good vision.

Re: Marcus Allan

Yeah, he looks to have a talent for looking at a jumble of play and positioning himself in the right spot. Used the ball pretty well when he got it too, on a night when Hadley, Stiller and CJ had let go some pretty nasty passes.

Re: Marcus Allan

Played well, although didn't get a lot of time. Was particularly good in the 3rd quarter and become that all important reciever, waiting behind the pack. Took advantage of some slack manning up by Carlton.

Re: Marcus Allan

Yeah exactly. He knew where to position himself on the outskirts of a messy pack so that someone could feed him the ball and he then had the quick hands to pass it to a fellow team mate running through the centre. And he looked quite comfortable and at ease with that job. Still no where near a shoo in for the starting 22 but I am happy to eat my humble pie and take back my previous stance on his ability.

Great post Ashli...it's a disposal that is not often noticed in the scheme of things. That link man in the right position at the right time to recieve the ball and put into into the path of another running player. Maybe not so fast & quite skinny but I think he has quite quick hands and passes to his teammate's advantage.

Re: Marcus Allan

Will get another year I reckon, or be delisted and re-rookied.

:D

Re: Marcus Allan

Hehe.

Seriously though, he seems to dominate at AFLQ level, if there is a reasonable chance they can get him to carry that into the seniors, I'd like to see them give him another pre-season.

Re: Marcus Allan

I see him in the bottom 10 players on our list at the moment, so would definitely be in danger of being de-listed. It is really the type of judgement call that depends a lot on what he has shown on the training track, in the 2s and the direction the club is going. All three things i have little to no accurate knowledge of....

Re: Marcus Allan

To my way of thinking you would keep him on the list because he's either good enough, or you think he will improve to be good enough. IMO he has yet to show the former, and he's 21 now - how much improvement can there be? Unfortunately he's got physical limitations and I can't see a big enough upside to warrant a spot on the list.

Re: Marcus Allan

End of Season Player Review

Having been in the system for a few years and having only played one senior game, 2007 was a make or break year for Marcus Allan. He started well, showing some good form in the NAB Cup, and kicking a few goals as a small forward. But when the season started opportunities were hard to come by, and he only managed to play the odd game here and there. He was able to contribute but he never really demonstrated that there was much of an upside to his game.

Allan has a reputation of being very dedicated and being an excellent trainer. But he is also undersized and slow and it was always going to be tough for him to make it as an AFL footballer. He really had to be a big possession getter or a very good user of the ball to make up for other deficiencies and he was neither. While he is a very good player at reserves level, he just wasn’t able to cut it at the top level and was delisted at season’s end.

Re: Marcus Allan

As posted a few weeks ago - when i was over in Perth, Marcus and his old man were staying at the same hotel and i saw them meeting with a couple of guys - wouldn't be surprised if WAFL related - surely he wouldn't be rookied by Freo or WCE (but would never put anything past Freo)
