Blakey is done.... !!!! ( im sure there will be some more jubilant than others...)

Shame to see it potentially end this way. Would have been nice to see him get the 100 games up for us and to get Father/Son eligibility.

Out of contract at years end may see him become the GWS version of Josh Fraser.

Would be nice to see if we could trade him or something but maybe that is a reach. Still a very servicable tap ruckman for first ball use....

Go Catters!
:D

Best of luck to him however.

Re: Blakey out for 10 Weeks..

I can definitely see GWS as an option for Blakey. It's a bit of a shame he's stranded on 99 and if by some chance he does get his 100th this year with the Cats it would be a great worry. It would be with Ottens injured and leading in to a finals series with also no improvement or injury from Vardy/Simpson.
I hope he gets his hundredth but not under those circumstances

Re: Blakey out for 10 Weeks..

So we have gone from having 5 ruckmen in the two's to none.
We are the new Hawthorn if Ottens goes down

Re: Blakey out for 10 Weeks..

The cynic in me wonders whether he has deliberately chosen to undergo surgery now when the club intends to rest Ottens leaving us a little short on ruckman with both West and Simpson underdone. Nah...

The article appears to suggest that he has deliberately taken the step now because he has worked out (or been told) that there's no more senior football at the Cats for him.

It's noted that he's been playing with the injury for several weeks in the hope of a recall, and has now come to the conclusion that even Otto's absence (along with West and Simpson being unavailable) will still not see him across the line for the ton.

Otto's presence and health for the business end of the season is now even more paramount (if that were possible).

I figure Blakey will still get the 100 up - it just won't be all at the same club.

Re: Blakey out for 10 Weeks..

Are his kids eligible for father son. I know you need 100 games but don't NAB cup games count?

Re: Blakey out for 10 Weeks..

Am I the only one who finds all this talk about trying to get Blakey to 100 games for the chance of getting a father/son in the future rather hilarious?

All the time that's been spent hanging him out to dry, and now we want a chance at his offspring?

Solid gold. :thumbsu:

This!!!! There was Rod who was very good, there is Mark who is um less good, so we want Mark Jnr???

Re: Blakey out for 10 Weeks..

I had no idea that the Saints had offered Blake a 3 year contract after the 2009 Grand Final. If he had of taken it, we definitely would have had the finances to retain Mumford :(. Great.

Anyway, all the best to the big guy at another club.

Re: Blakey out for 10 Weeks..

I'd say that's career done, struggle to see him playing finals after missing 10 weeks or so.

Ruck stock wise we'll be ok, we'll get a good look at Vardy this week, and Simpson and West should be back from injury either this week or next, and now they really need to step up and find form.

The reality is we would have (and still will be) screwed if Otto goes down, whether Blake was fit or not, because Otto is that much better than all of our other ruckmen. Which is why we have to manage him carefully to ensure he's right for September.

Oh, and there's now a slot to upgrade a second rookie (along with Smedts being out for the year) so hopefully those guys can show some form also.

Please don't open that wound , imagine how feckin good it would be to have retained Mumford on the list.

Re: Blakey out for 10 Weeks..

Damn shame to see Blakey stuck on 99 but why is he getting the surgery done? He doesn't use his hands apart from the ball up's

I can understand why he doesn't need surgery on his feet

Re: Blakey out for 10 Weeks..

I think Blakey made a mistake not taking the Saints offer. IIRC he put himself out there for trade during the last preseason and no one wanted him. I hope he gets a gig at GWS but it's tough going when your only a one trick pony. Todays ruckmen need to be able to play up forward or down back as well.

The Cat's obviously wont renew his contract. Best of luck for the future Blakey. At least you leave us with a Premiership medallion and not many players get that honor.

If I was to guess I would say he has been told he is not in Geelongs future plans and so he wants to get his finger fixed now so he is ready for the start of preseason for the 2012 season at a new club.

one version of the story is that he was prepared to carry the injury if it meant he was going to get senior game time, but Vardy getting a gig last week put paid to that little red wagon, so it was him that initiated the surgery.

Re: Blakey out for 10 Weeks..

I feel a bit sorry for him. He doesn't deserve the hate he gets on here. I was at the game he injured his finger, he wasn't having any fun at all with pain.

The sub rule really stuffed him ay.

Re: Blakey out for 10 Weeks..

I think good riddance comments are in bad taste, the guy is injured and at the very least he deserves some sort of indifference over glee. Not a good footballer by any means but he tried hard and under the old interchange system I feel he'd still have been somewhat useful given his ruckwork was so good.

I must say though I am quite surprised, it is Blakey's first injury of any description as far as I know...

But hopefully Vardy takes the opportunity to develop now.

Re: Blakey out for 10 Weeks..

Agree with that STC.

Yes Blake had and still has his deficiencies (and I wish we still had Mumford) but glee about an injured player is not the attitude we should have as supporters, nor is glee at the likely end of his career the way we should be.

He tried his best, and I hope he finds a club that is willing to take him on next year, and let's hope Vardy develops well for the rest of the year.

Agree with that and I wouldn't be hanging my head in shame if I played 99 games for the Geelong Football Club and had a Premiership medallion in the draw beside my bed.

Re: Blakey out for 10 Weeks..

I certainly don't hate Blake. He played a role and tried his best, can't ask for more. He just has limited ability which was exposed in the modern game, and hieghtened by the sub rule. And the Mumford loss can't be blamed on him, that's the administrators.

But that said, I don't see him having a role in the future of the club. And if his leaving gives a message to the young blokes to stick around because they do have a role, then I'm glad for that message to come through loud and clear.

Re: Blakey out for 10 Weeks..

We have not handled the Blake situations well.I still say he should have been played very early and got it out of the way. Even if we sent him to the Freo game and tell him to beat Sandilands if he wants another game...

People have forgotten I think that he carried a fair whack of the ruck over multiple season while Ottens was on his "2 weeks breaks". Not everybody playing in an AFL side has a likable disposition but when he played he gave our group more than an even chance at any bounce down. He was a very limited player but he still served us for 99 games and won his position in the 09 GF.

The timing of this operation....

Is he just trying get himself fit for Oct trade time? Has he been told by someone to be fit for then?Has he given up trying to get a senior game?Does he now hope that the timing of it inconveniences us with so many other rucks injured? Who knows , like so many things with Blake its very easy to make it look worst case.

And as far as those questioning why we should get him to the 100 for FS. There are very few advantages in the draft now but FS is one. Its just an option that now probably will not be there. Its almost like some at the club have found dealing with Mark so difficult , thats its perhaps something they will be glad to be done with permanently.
