Re: Bomber To Quit As Coach After 2011

Costa seems to think it's not set in stone, but by then I think Bomber will have achieved everything he set out to achieve.

Part of me wants to see him coach for another 10 years, but Sanderson or Lappin, or even Caracella are all great candidates.

I wonder if the board were thinking of a succession plan before Hinkley left?

He is only an assistant coach. He isn't lost to us. And it's better that he gets more experience anyway.

But with a list that has been together for 8-10 years I would prefer an experienced coach rather than a newbie like the 3 you mentioned.

I guess it depends on who is available at the time. Sanderson has played with most of the current group, and has been involved with the club for 14 years. I think he'll be strongly considered.

Re: Bomber To Quit As Coach After 2011

this is a very important point, we need to do all we can to hang on to te likes of Balme and wells.
Balmey might be the problem; in that we have to try and keep him here. Wells i think bleeds blue & white, so i cant really sense that he's going any where at all.
I do like the talk about Nigel Lappin another coach in waiting from a previous post, you can see it now....all clubs will be after retired players from these dynasty type era's - Malthouse (eags/coll) Matthews (lions) Thompson (Cats).
It's going to be hard to think of the cats without bomber, he's like part of the furniture down there now.
Along with GA'J & Selwood i think our main man to sign up is biig Tom, he's going to be our guts and glory of our forward line for the next 10 years.....

Re: Bomber To Quit As Coach After 2011

would love to see bomber stay on and rebuild another premiership team from scratch. it rarely happens these days - coaches do their stint and leave with the usual line that they've taken the list as far as they can.

Re: Bomber To Quit As Coach After 2011

and i don't really like the idea of a concrete succession plan. if there's one of the current batch of assistants who is more likely than the others to be an afl coach, then do whatever you have to do and pay whatever you have to pay to keep him at the club. but when the time comes to make the appointment then get the best available coach, rather than the guy who's the best available 1-2 years out.

i think it'll be interesting to see how the clubs who've gone down the succession planning route will fare. i just think there'll be two people who'll both have different ideas about who's in charge and exactly what to do with their lists.

Re: Bomber To Quit As Coach After 2011

While I can appreciate the romance in your wish to see Bomber rebuild our list again, fact is he has always stated he is not a career coach a la Sheedy, Malthouse or Matthews, who have each rebuilt many lists at one or several clubs.

When his contract is up at the end of 2011, Thompson will have been coaching us for 12 years. That's a long time to spend in one high-pressure job, albeit one that he absolutely loves.

I don't subscribe to the succession plan notion either, but if the club does choose to go down that path, I can't see that person being Hinkley. From all reports Sando has been very impressive so he'd have to be an early favourite.

Re: Bomber To Quit As Coach After 2011

Fair enough, and kudos to Bomber and the staff for all the work they've done.

AFL coaching is very tough on coaches (and their friends and families) so you can't blame Bomber for bowing out after 2011 to focus on a quieter life and the freedom to do some other things.

Hopefully he can be a 3 or 4 time winning premiership coach by then!

I think Sando is a good candidate to be the next coach if Hinkley doesn't come back...anyways we'll deal with that closer to when the time comes.

I just hope we keep Wellsy to build the next dynasty :thumbsu:

Dont clubs and coaches ever learn, should have been kept quiet until the time comes !!!

Remember Sando left for a short stint at Port Adelaide before coming back to the Catters, so maybe Hinkley might do the same thing after a wee bit up north. It'd be good for him to come back with some outside perspective, especially from a club that has been built from the ground up basically right in front of him.

And as for the dynasty, we'd all better hope the current crop of WAGS are good and fertile!
