Varcoe is one player that can impact the scoreboard and provide a truck load of forward pressure with his dash. Goldsack is another option as the third tall.

None of those options offer enough scoreboard impact. They're just wasted chasing tail. Varcoe has been our best small defender this year (not hard to do) he's also only managed more than one goal a game on two occasions with us and one of those times was when he played as a defender. Goldsack other than 2012 has never been a goal scoring option I doubt he'll just pick it up again.

He's 110kgs how much size do you think he needs to put on? His strength is mobility, he doesn't need to add 10kgs of muscle it won't help him.

The extra weight will probably lead to injuries too

He needs to stop getting bushes off the ball so easily.

He also needs Joe Daniher's hands.
He fixes those two issues he'll be a gun but until then he's a liability most of the time. I haven't given up on him though I just think he needs to improve before his AFL standard his obviously got attributes to work with like his height, leap and reach.

2 goals a game would not make him all Australian and core strength that's just a cop out for people who know nothing. You want to know what helps build a strong core strong legs

Sure know more about Footy perhaps , but i did say he has improved his core strength as noticed if you watch him.

Cox is a classic Ectomorph and he'll find it difficult to stack on muscle mass, he has a high metabolism. His strengths should be aerobic endurance and vertical jumping. Trying to bulk him up too much might be a waste of time (unless we look at it over the next 5-7 years) whereas just getting him a little smarter at timing leads and running off an opponent (I don't think his aerobic capacity was very high when we drafted him....soccer goalies don't run much), but get that up there and he becomes a weapon.

Even Sandy started out a weedy kid (but he was always big boned)

Playing football is about more than just kicking goals he needs to add more strings to his bow and become more dynamic because is he says they way he is he isn't going to consistently kick goals for us. I would like to see him have a more rounded game present up at the ball some times and be stronger in the consent. I would be happy if he could start regularly taking between 4-8 marks a game at the moment he averages 2.5. At this stage of his career his presence in the forward line is disruptive

So what he has had 3 years to put on size is his basal metabolic rate is high as it would be for anyone of that size he needs to make sure he balances his macros and has a high calorie intake to put on size. You are all massive over reacting to this I don't want him to look like Arnie but it is quite achievable for him to gain a little bit of strength that would greatly benefit his footy. A 5kg muscle gain for someone of his size is not that much but the extra strength would greatly benefit him

The things that need improving are
1. recovery on the ground and speed of reaction when moving to tackle. He is quite good at choosing inventive options for knock ons, so no problem there.
2. positioning for marks, and regaining position when his first move is not the best. If he can make significant gains here, he will be a player.
3. holding the straightforward marks. He still drops too many where he has done all the hard preperatory work.

These are all areas where improvement is possible, and even likely.
Note also that the AFL seldom leaves the rules alone for very long. A change that advantages very tall ruckmen is always a possibility.

The purpose of my post was to float ideas on keeping the big man in the team. Personally I would play Dacs, Kirby or Brown. I have little interest in actually winning the next seven games. My interest is in getting games into kids and develop players like Cox.

Obviously I don't believe the options mentioned are as bad as you have stated. What I like about Goldsack going forward is that it opens up opportunities for Schazz down back.

Varcoe provides more forward pressure than Elliott, Fasolo combined and needless to say Varcoe by miles is a far better option than Blair.

So you're calling it a draw... Of course, silly me to assume that if Cox hasn't shown more then he's shown less, effectively claiming Schache had done more.

Cox has kicked bags of 3 and 4 at senior level last I checked. Don't recall Schache having done either yet. Cox has a 6 goal 15 mark game at VFL level. Not aware that Schache has managed anything like that at NEAFL level. But if it makes you feel better, we'll call it a draw.

That's cool I just don't like those ideas. Goldsack up forward I don't mind as much as Varcoe because it gives Scharenberg a go down back but I don't rate his contribution up forward. His not dangerous enough his defenders say of him and make it harder for Moore and like to get open.

Varcoe I don't want up forward under any circumstances unless he's playing as a wing and going down there for a rest. Up forward robs us of our best small defender and his run and carry out of defence. It's not worth the trade off. Blair also shouldn't be the benchmark. I'm also sick of Varcoe being thrown around like me fixit, just leave him in defence to settle.

Yeah what ever you say champ. I forgot Cox is the best player to ever pull on a boot and nobody is allowed to disagree. Cox's achievements look marginally better as he has played in a better side and has never had to play on the number one defender and the only reason Cox looks better is because he is more accurate in front of goal a lot of that will have to go with the fact most of his goals are from point blank range. Schache has been down this year but to say Cox is better is simply not true. There statistical output is very similar therefore neither has really shown any more but it is obvious from what they have both managed that Schache will have the better career as he should being a pick 2.

I am sick of Cox being compared to players who are two or three years out of the draft who have had to cut their teeth playing on the best defender. We always had to hear that he is new to the game, not one person has disputed that and yes he should improve the longer he is in the system but that's about it he doesn't have a huge ceiling. These young blokes are also going to improve as they fill out they do have an advantage of playing junior footy but as they learn how to play at the level they are also going to improve. Just plucking out stats saying he is on track is far to simplistic

Interesting article on Cox. He has acheived a lot with not having much experience in the game. He has things to work on but I hope we sign him up for one more year.

He'll be on the list next year. No reason to invest so much in him then chuck him on the scrap heap. Even if its just as depth.

I hope we keep Cox for at least another year. I was sceptical of him getting a senior game, and was proven wrong. The memory of Shae McNamara was too strong. But Mason is obviously cut from a different cloth, and has shown enough for another crack at it. His extreme height compensates for other failings, at least at this stage of his AFL career. Worth keeping.
