What was it you were saying about kneejerk outbursts? Some ridiculous comments in here interspersed with some good ones :p

Just another day at the office for the Crows at Subiaco. Why is it that with the flowing, hard running style of football we play we cannot seem to create space and move the ball fluently at Subi? Absolute mystery.

Cook has been very good. Petrenko and Sloane having an impact. Dangerfield needs to be stationed in the middle for as much of the second half as his fitness base allows. Send Thompson to the forward line for a bit if we're wanting another rotation in there.

Griffin isn't up to it. Reilly has struggled again. Thompson and Edwards have lacked polish but we know they can lift.

But once again Taylor Walker, what a talent. The degree of improvement from him and Dangerfield will determine whether we play in a GF this year.
Armstrong is not physical enough for defence smooth mover but too skinny, forwards will kill him) . Next week we bring in Jaensch for the forward line along with Henderson. Petrenko to defence in place of Armstrong.

We wont be top 4 . Sandiland killed Tippett also , not just Griffen everybody

Brian Taylor, what an absolute w***er.
Toss up between him and Dwayne Russell for the worst commentators around :thumbsd:

Personally I loved how he jizzed over Barlow.

As with everyone here, I agree the only good ones were Danger and Walker. Also thought Cook and in some areas, Petrenko went well.

Particular let downs were Bock, Griffin V Sandilands, and Douglas. This guy cannot kick accurately to teammates for nuts. Was pretty frustrating. I'd like to see his efficiency.

I also thought it was poor that Edwards didn't show the respect Barlow needed. His pre-season should have alerted someone, yet Barlow had plenty of space everywhere.

Nothing wrong with BT's commentary... better than Shaw / Walls and company.

Realistically... we have a few average (ttp) first/second gamers in the team... cook, sloane, armstrong who (without knowing what their role actually was!) have been not up to it. Add to that... VB, Vince, Bock, Thompson... have been well below average.

But one thing I must say... how many posessions has our CAPTAIN had? I think Freo... will have a lot of unsung hero's tonight with respect ot tag jobs. A lot of our players have been completely wiped out of the game. Hasleby for one...

To sugar coat it... Porps, Sellar will defo be in next week...

It's very harsh... but the reality is.

Petrenko... will be nothing ever but a scrapper.
Rutten... average.
VB... well he needs to start preseason tomorrow.
Stevens... did less than nothing.
Mackay... wake up call... he was nowhere tonight.
Hentschel... must be dropped immediately
Cook... good in spots.. but I found it hazrd to know his role.
Reilly.. has millisecond moments in the 3rd qtr...
Douglas... has hit rock bottom - Glenelg needs him.
McLeod, Edwards and (dare I say it 'The Captain') were nothing but bit players tongiht.

I will go on record right now... we will not make the 8 on what I have seen so far this pre season/ round 1.

My only positive this preseason has been 'Henderson' who isn't even on our list atm. Can someone answer if we have room for rookie upgrades?

Truly awful, must bounce back next week.
Who's going to be dropped?

Brian Taylor, what an absolute w***er.

depends who is available out of Maric, knights porps burton johncock,...

Tonight was pathetic, but what else is new for Crows' first round?

We have been slow starters for as long as I can remember. We have rarely played subiaco well.

Put that with our first round performances, and apart from the fact that we played Freo, everything else pointed to a loss. This is not new to us.

OK you lost me at the first sentence.

I don't mind petrenko... and he was a work horse tonight. But he doesn't have any sort of class us supporters can pin any hopes on to move us up the ladder. He can fill in for injured players and play a role.. but won't ever be a game winner. Hope I am wrong... but doubt I am.

Goodwin... I can't remember him having a single posession tonight bar the kick ins.

It was horrible however, there are 21 more rounds...

This board should be locked until the morning so people stop posting stuff that they will regret later on in the week. We had the same sort of doomsday posting at the start of last year. We looked to be suffering from a hard pre-season, alot of players still a bit underdone and Freo looked like they were in peak condition.

Just forget about it and move on. Can't wait for next week.

Tippet will kick 2... if he's lucky and gets a couple free's in the square.
There will be a massive pack stopping him from marking anything close to the goals and on the run Tarrant/McPharlin will have his measure in pace. Tippet is not a factor.

If I'm not mistaken his only goal came from a free kick. Also if I'm not mistaken he didn't take to many marks close to goal.

I'll eat my humble pie in the fact that Tarrant didn't have his measure in a straight line. But the rest was spot on.

You can't rely on a young player, who I agree will be an above average player, to not only kick all your goals but then ruck for a good chunk of the game against the best ruckman in the league.

Good game. Good luck for the rest of the year and hopefully that young Sloane (was it him that got injured?) is ok.

Btw, How horrible were the umpires, for both sides. Atleast give us some consistency... that's all we want as supporters.

A surprisingly poor effort.

As much as I would love to say "Another case of Freo giving their supporters false hope!"I believe this was more about the Crows lack of fight!
However lets not take anything away from their victory, they outplayed us!

OK you lost me at the first sentence.
Petrenko is a defender ala johncock , as quick as he is he isnt a very flexible mover more of a straight line player. What i mean flexible is Rioli, Leon Davis. Henderson needs to come of the Rookie list and go inthe forward line or Half Back Line ala Otten and play that running half back role as Armstron is just too skinny and forwards will slaughter him.

Also on what Jaensch did for Stury yesterday (28 touches) I would be upgrading him as he is a natural footballer and to me plays similar to what Peter vardy use to. Long racking kick and accurate plus quick.

Loved BT's commentary, the jizzing over Barlow was hilarious as was his attack on the boundary umpire who was thinking of home :thumbsu:

Taylor Walker is a natural forward, plays in similar manner to our Chris Mayne, maybe needs to work on his defensive pressure the other way, as much as he put a dent on the scoreboard, he allowed his direct opponents to run off him too easily.

I genuinely think you were too slow tonight, apart from Dangerfield you lacked run and we were able to put that pressure on because you have a few plodders in the middle.

I was dissappointed with Vince, after a superb finals display last year I was expecting him to do more.

Dangerfield is going to be a special player.

Do you have any other ruckman, Sandilands is the best in the business but he shouldnt be able to dominate that much. Griffin was poor.

Heads up, long season ahead :thumbsu:

Classic BT!

Vince hasn't had a great pre-season. I think it'll take him a while to come back into form after being out.

Sandilands is the best at hte moment. Griffin is still 'learning', however I thought Tippett made a better fight of it later on. Still, He killed us in all aspects. We're still waiting on Maric to come back and hopefully we'll see more with Moran and maybe McKernan.

Next time we put platform footy boots on James Craig and smack and let them jump all over him. Then, maybe then, we will win a tap.

I thought some of youngsters did a stand-up job. It was a high pressure game, and the likes of Petrenko and Walker made an impact. They weren't the steadying influence that the likes of Porps and Johncock would be, but they took the game by the horns and went for it. I was really happy with the intensity of both. Even Armstrong, even if I'd have liked (much) more accuracy from him >_< I can see the player he's going to be, and that's pretty exciting. He's got a good kick, when it's accurate, and he's fast and intense, too. I suddenly know why there are cheerleaders on the board.

I though Rory Sloane slotted into the side nicely until his ankle got rolled, and while he wasn't as noticeable as Petrenko or Walker, he moves through the pack nicely, and he picks up the ball without fear, and with a little bit of sense in his handballing (unlike some senior players I could mention.)

Obviously I'm really disappointed, but I was talking to my bf (a Geelong fan.) oh the phone about our effort as the final quarter rolled down (saved me having to hear BT wallowing in Barlow love) and realised:

That we've given a bunch of our babycrows some match experience in a seriously intense game, and I was pretty happy with their efforts

That none of our players really ran out of steam (morale, yes, steam no), unlike early rounds of last year

That Danger is a game-changer. He can lift the entire team single-handedly and get their minds back on track. It's absolute magic to watch -- his run in the final quarter had me whooping at the TV.

That Tippett, despite poor accuracy, did a solid job. He stays bouyant in morale, as Danger does, and the two of them will be the rocks around which the rest of the team steadies as the older players retire.

That Craig is willing to change plans mid-stream in games, and that it can work. Bock in forward line? It was almost working...

That I just love seeing my team out on the turf.

I guess the disappointing thing is that we waited for so long and they served up THAT! Clearly we had underdone players in Thompson, Bock, and to a lesser extent VB. Vince, Douglas and Mackay were not their usual selves. Edwards had some very ordinary possessions (despite being our biggest possession winner). Our entire midfield forgot to turn up! Am annoyed at people bagging Griffin. Yes, he was flogged - but seriously, would Maric (or McKernan or Moran) have faired any better against the super-freak in Sandilands? Griff took a few good marks around the ground (and only one less than Sandilands) - something he is not noted for normally. I'd like to see him again, up against a non-freak, before I pass complete judgement. My initial thoughts are that he hasn't progressed and he won't make it at this level, but I really want to see him up against another ruckman other than superman!

The positives for the game were clearly Walker and Dangerfield with Petrenko doing some good things. In looking at the stats, I'm surprised how many stats some of our players got because it wasn't obvious during the game.

Got to hold on to the thought that they couldn't possibly play any worse than that! Could they?

Sandilands is the best ruckman in the LEAGUE .
Many teams will struggle with his presence this season, particularly at Subi.
He's a monster.

only read the first 28 pages of the thread now, and just afew things

I have got an idea, instead of handballing it again and again, kick the thing.
Do you even know modern football?
try precise kicking through a zone. It's not that easy
the only way we'll be able to kick through it is if Goodwin, Walker and Knights are our half back line and kicking over it. You have to get 3-4 good handballs to break the first line of the zone and break apart it's foundations in the middle by forcing the defenders to move out of their position. It's this stage we can kick it long.

Or you need to find a week spot, in our normal zone, this is 30-40 meters directly out (into the corridor), from there a team can just run around the zone and have the entire side of the field open.

Also, our frontal pressure was pathetic yesterday. If that lifted we would of been making turnovers and seeting up more scoring drives. This all came down to the poor defensive skill of our midfield which put our defenders under enourmous pressure

Smashed at the clearances and Sandilands was disrespected at the AFC selection table with Maric not playing, Sandilands is one of the best ruckman in the AFL and has handed the AFC their arse on a platter.
actually, we played 1 ruckman because we respected him too much. We knew we wouldnt be able to win the ruck so we played 1 instead of 2, and tried to hurt them at ground level. Unfortunately Griffin isn't good enough to even interupt the constant flow of Freo dominating

Maric/Moran/Craig/Tippett would all of been better options in center bullups and Maric/Tippet would of been better around the field
and constantly getting the names wrong
that was what pissed me off alot, that first half was horrendous by BT

calling McLeod, Edwards
calling Tippett, Walker
not knowing who a brunette was so guessed that it was either Vince or Mackay

and the umps wern't that bad. I thought they did a good job.
You're just trying to redirect the blame on an outside aspect of the game

the reason for the loss was 2 things
1) Neil Craig for only selecting 1 ruckman. We needed to contain Sandilands that we failed to do
2) Fremantle's frontal pressure

The umps were awful. That said, they played no role in us losing the game - Freo played superbly and Adelaide played badly, that's pretty much all there is to it.
