Maths in VCE

Pretty sure it is:

Speciallist (Y12)
Methods (VCE)
Further (VCE)
Consolidated (Y11)

in rank, not too sure though...speciallist was the highest at my school for memory.

well, MUPHAS is highest, its Uni Maths

Specialist is next

Then Methods

And Further is lowest.

I'm doing Methods and absolutely hating it. I'm crap at maths, the only reason I'm doing it is to keep my options open at uni. I need a 25 in it, hopefully I can get it.
Uni maths is an extension of methods isn't it? If that's true I would rank it equal with specialist, simply because they are both very difficult and different at the same time. I'm doing methods 3/4 this year and finding it 'alright' and am pretty sure I'll go on and do spec' next year. The fact it has such a big mark up is very appealing.

The thing is though, I hate maths. I am doing it simply because it is a strength, however, selecting a course for uni, I am pretty sure it's going to be a science based one. When I finish school the first thing I'll be celebrating is no more maths, it's going to be a great occasion! :thumbsu:

so if you're apllying for a job that the employer looks for good maths grades, specialist maths would be the most competitive aginst other people, am i wrong

In the real world, VCE maths is only a pre-requisite for a uni degree, and doesn't exactly mean anything in employment. Employers wouldn't give a sh*t about VCE maths score IMO, they would care about subjects studied in Uni and the grades you got.

I am doing further and SUCK. Done 3 exercises all year, no more than 2 questions from each, all i do is talk to my friends, we dont even get books out. we did a SAC couple of weeks ago and i didnt even answer enuf q's to pass.

Neways just thought i'd tell u that story

Only do Speciallist if you're a maths freak. You gotta love maths and be a complete natural freak at it. Methods is pretty good. Can easily get a 40 with moderate work and an above average maths brain (I got 40 without doing a heap of homework). Further is a piece of cake. DO IT , DO IT, DO IT. Further can easily net you a 43 especially if you do methods.

Paper one of specialist is OK but paper two is ****ing hard. If you want to be good at maths you gotta practice, practice, practice. I've heard the exam has changed a bit now with a calculator exam and one without it. Make sure you have PRCHEAT, Factor9 etc etc

Out of all methods topics probability is the ****test.....the maths to do it is easy but you have to think more conceptually than do it systematically like finding a derivative

Maths is crap.

I passed yr 11 maths last year and that was enough. Great time to socialise really.

I wouldnt be celebrating to early. If maths is a pre-requisite for a course, then odds are there is gonna be maths involved. I had a large amount of mates doing science, engineering type courses and they have all had to do maths subjects which they all hate (and some failed). So yeah if your doing a science i wouldnt be celebrating yet.

I did Methods 3/4 last year and doing Spec this year (the mark up is generous IMO). If you're alright at maths then i suggest doing Methods, not that difficult to get a good score if you work hard. Furthur is an easy one to get a high 40 or even a 50 (doesn't mark down when you score really high), but I didn't do it due to needing/wanting to do other subjects. Also, Uni maths is supposedly much easier if you have Spec or at least Methods under the belt, and it's often a pre-requisite. Furthur Maths won't help you much at Uni I wouldn't think, obviously depends on the course though.

thats why i did methods. got 28 i think. as long as you put in a bit of work you'll be right. and a warning for all those interested in doing a business based course next year, maths continues on into uni!!!

Yeh im doing further this year as thats all I need for my prerequisite.

Methods is only a prerequisite for the likes of Melbourne and high enter requirements.

If you are doing a business course in 2007, methods is the most overrated subject in school and I challenge anyone to say that more than 20% of methods will be used in the business world if not the real world.

It all depends on what course you want to do and it gives you more options than further.

Is consolidated dumb arse maths?
Didn't even know our school offered "Consolidated" maths...

I ended up doing Further in Year 12 though, or as I liked to call it, 'dumb s**t maths'...it's fairly easy, although I did little to no work and got about a 35? or so.

I don't mind numbers (I can add things up quickly in my head and things like that) but hate maths. It's absolute s**t.

Quantitative methods and management accounting are pretty much universal for a commerce degree unless you are doing specialised HR or Marketing degree or some other useless nonsense.

I reckonend doing Further if you are good at Maths. I got 49 for further with very little work, while if i had have done Spec i would have had to have worked my but off to get that score even with the scaling anyway. Seriously maths is a piece of ****, you just don't need it unless you want to be an engineer or something. I am doing Commerce/Law and the closest i have come to maths is ecconomics

Yeh spesh have to do lot of work.........

Biggest mistake I made with spesh was I didnt do as much work as I should've to understand the material because I thought I could get away with using cheat sheet for a lot of it. Doing maths at uni now and no cheat sheet or calculator allowed in exam so you pretty much have to learn it properly otherwise you're ****ed

Exactly. The closest thing I've come to maths is Business Stats which is like further anyway.

PS. You're a freak if you got 49 in further.

Sounds like me doing Methods 3/4 this year. I do not recommend Methods to the lazy.
I do.

Although it depends on what you mean by lazy. I was lazy but I did work. Just not compared to most others
