I don't believe he has played a game with us, yet I see him completely bagged here all the time. Personally I haven't seen him play... what is so bad about him, and how did you guys form such a strong opinion about him... is it from seeing him play in the SANFL? Which club does he play for in the SANFL?

5 years on the list without threatening to get a game says it all.

Yes, it has to be from seeing him play in the SANFL, because there is nothing else.

Plays okay in the SANFL but overall is built like Tarzan and plays like Jane.

Is tall, but plays small. Would get killed as a KPP at AFL level IMO and is too slow to play a flank at the elite level.

I was hoping to trade him for a packet of Gravox.

Matthew Smith has been on the AFC list since 2001, and has not yet made his debut. In a preview of Smith in 2001, it states that he is a, "Stong key position player best suited to the forward line, he is skilled on both sides of the body". However the most shocking statement was, "He should push for a game this season (01)".

To give you an idication of how long he has been on the list for, the following were AFC players in Smith's first season:

Angwin, Byrne, Eccles, Handby, Robran, Richardson just to name a few.

Matthew Smith:

Height: 193cm
Weight: 85kg
Date of Birth: 29 March 1983
SANFL Club: Sturt

I have watched a fair both of Smith in SANFL with both Port Adelaide and later wit Sturt.

I am not a big fan but I do think people bag him out more than they probably should *looks at macca23* :p :D

Basically he looks like Tarzan and plays like a Jane. He is a BIG lad. Taller than Rutten but probably just as solid. The problem is that Smith just doesn't use that bulk. He is pretty average in one on one contests. He is the size of a genuine KPP but he plays like a flanker. That would be OK if he had the pace for it though. He is just not quick enough for an AFL flanker.

He is not a bad mark. Not great but not crap either. His disposal by foot is questionable. He does provide a fair bt of rebound from HB. He can get a fair bit of the footy but mostly as a linkman.

His old man was a late developer. Hopefully Smithy is too. He was always a project player for us and in the last 2 years he has improved on what he showed in the first 3 years. I am not sure he has improved this year on his last year but his output has been pretty solid in SANFL.

I cant believe he is still here!! This great KPP that gets out muscled and out marked marked by bloody rovers!

Macca23 has summed it up very well.

We recruited him as a forward. we've been screaming out for another forward option for years, where has he been? FFS not even Carlton would take him.

Hoping that he makes it next year is just a waste of energy. He's had five years to make it. He should have done it already. I dont think most Crows fans even know who he is.

He's a handy SANFL player nothing more.

Matthew Smith has taken the definition of project player to an all new extreme.
LOL :D

As I said, at the beginning of the 2001 season it stated he should push for a senior game. Yet in 2002 it stated, "A long-term key position project". He must have been incredibly bad that season...

He was an emergency the night we lost to Brisbane by 140+
At least we could have saved one of our more valuable players some dignity and given Smith a story to tell the grandkids. :p

So true.

If he'd played he could have told the grandkids about the time he played in a game that the Crows lost by 240 points. :)

Wishful Thinking = Is there any chance Smith may still be delisted? There's still time.....

Remember, the Crows don't necessarily need to field a squad of 40. 38 or 39 players is also allowed OR we may deem to use a pre-season draft pick.

Aside from Smith, I'd say that the 2 other lucky bastards to remain are Massie (becoming excess baggage), and to a lesser extent Scott Stevens (who I actually rate).

So in summary he:

Looks like tarzan plays like jane,
Doesn't use his bulk,
Average in one on one contests,
Not quick enough for an AFL flanker,
Average Mark,
Questionable disposal.

Hmmm looks like the total package.

Stevens must be retained now until Gibson can come on. Our only other KPP options are Bock, Rutts, Trent, Pez, and Kenny. Me thinks, a kpp is yet again a priority in this draft. I wonder if the Mees could be a forward pocket tall option in 06?

You can add injury prone, has dodgy hamstrings.

Honestly, we should be able to get a good SANFL player eg Jeremy Clayton, at around pick 90 who is much more value than Tarjane.

Whilst i cannot comment on Smith because I have limited exposure to him playing, i find it amusing that the same people who are bagging him were bagging Bock abt 12 mnths ago. Maybe, just maybe the people employed by the club to make these decisions know a little more abt these players abilities than the people on this website??
