Just heard-that is the best result heard in ages. Apparently the AFL argued that as Maxwell "didn't have to make contact" he shouldn't have-dumb argument as it rules out tackling and contests.

Wow. Will be interested to hear the reasoning for this and if the appeals tribunal is saying that what Maxwell did was fine or the tribunal just stuffed up in there handling of the case. I think teams should read the findings very carefully.

Congrats to Nick. He was always going to be unlucky to be put out, but I still think he should have been.

Colles tried to argue that when the only option is to bump or pull out the player should pull out.

What kind of ****ed argument is that?

Common sense decision... what the AFL were saying is that if 3 players from the same team were near the ball, then all 3 HAD to go for the ball as any other action that results in accidental contact with the opposition will be reportable.

AA's baby needs some serious rethinking and reworking. The tribunal system in place now is more of a mess than what was there before. How can the tribunal and the appeal's board have such completely different outcomes, and if the tribunal and/or appeal's board don't understand the rules or how they are intended to be applied, how can the clubs or players be expected to?

Edit - good to see Maxwell cleared, sad to see a young player injured from the bump, but I dare say he will be more aware next time he steps onto a football field. Accidents do happen when you have moving objects in a confined space (see the umpire v Saint player for a good example).

AFL argued that there are some options where the best option is "Not to Bump" -

Ask the coaches if they agree with that. -

Yeah that was the closing argument of the AFL's chief advocate, anyone qualified for this job apply now.

To state that there are times when pulling out of a contest is the right thing to do, was responded by the Collingwood advocate by stating that that is just not part of our game.

Seems Maxy got off on incompetence from the MRP and the appeals board, if they heard the case properly I believe he would have got 4 weeks under the letter of the AFL law.

Wow.....Very suprised and sets a dangerous precedent for the future. Would have thought two weeks was fair as he has a history of these "bumps" and often tries to make the big hits rather than going for the ball.

Kick out the members of the tribunal and replace them with members of the appeals board.

They do say the law is an ass :)
