Maxwell vs Thornton

Maxwell the third man up, floating defender option.

Thornton plays a similar role when in defence but can provide an option up forward.

If Maxwell is not captain then he wouldnt get a game. Just a useless player doing the easiest job in footy, cannot stand that he captained a premiership. Reid, Tarrant, Brown, Obrien....how is there room for Maxwell? Thornton is no star but has skill, can take a good mark, kick ten times better and is very versatile. Easy answer in my opinion

Loved the comment after the GF from Maxwell that he didnt know where to go once Pods went off. Says it all really . Both lower tier players Id take Thornton as Maxwells disposal and decision making is shocking.

Both average players in ability, Maxwell provides great leadership and puts his body on the line. So Maxwell because he makes the players around him play a better game.

I can't vote without bias though after Thornton's last few games in 2011 when he threw his body around everywhere. Notable moment was when he contested a pack mark and it was crumbed for a goal in our semi final, he ended up in hospital but he got everyone's respect (I'd like to think).

Thornton was pretty good late in the season, but his best is nowhere near Maxwells best, Maxy was crippled by injury this year, Thornton probably had a better year but so did 100+ other players in the comp.

Maxwell is harder. Maxwell has been AA. Maxwell is a club captain. Maxwell has played consistently well in finals over the last two years.

He's not the most talented bloke going around, but he's better than Thornton.

Thornton is not a key back either but was forced to due to Carltons lack of key backs. As a third floating defender he was and is better than Maxwell. For what its worth Thornton to could very easily be a premiership player if he chose money over loyalty as he knocked back Hawthorns offers in 2007.

Didak dropped his bundle this year, no doubt, his confidence was shot, but last year he was better that Goddard overall, averaged 25 and kicked 40 goals, Goddard is simply not capable of those numbers, as most aren't, a year is a long time in football.
