Ok simple enough who do you think will/has been the better player. For me Kenny probably shows the most potential of our list and SHOULD be the next captain. I know we have thrashed this out already but remember Round 5 Vs. Richmond we had lost our first four and suddenly our regular CHB plays at CHF and kicks 5. This is the kind of inspirational thing Roo does and is the kind of inspirational thing Kenny can do.

The Caveman (aka Where's Wally) is a 2 time premiership club legend.

Kenny MackGee is developing into one of our core first pick players.

there's a fair way to go yet before comparisons can be made although the unfashionable workmanlike approach is a similarity.

My vote would have to go to Kenny McGregor, Kenny Mac has the talent to be the number one defender in the side and lead by example but P Caven was a 2-time premiership player (duly noted) but he wasn’t our best defender and the premiership defence was build around his deficiencies.

At this point in time we have to look at the achievements of both players. I would say that Caven has achieved more. I think that Cavo got the most possible out of his body and skills.

In time though I would expect Kenny to display that he is the better player

Caven for me - the number of times he hurt the opposition by sneaking down to the forward lines to kick a goal plus he was a quite good fearless defender, you would think that after that collision with lockett that he would shirk a contest but no way, he was often the first to back into a pack

agreed. Cavo wasn't actually a particularly good defender, but ran hard hard out of defense and linked up well. A valuable player but not a key defensive backman.

Kenny for me.
Has the potential to be a club champion and club captain.
Cavan will be remembered for that one day in September though which may cloud peoples selection.

The Caveman played far more than 1 decent game TJ. Was very unlucky not to get AA selection.

I think that if we compare careers at the same stage and age, Kenny is undoubtedly in front, as Caven was regarded as a run of the mill player with both Fitzroy and Sydney before coming to Adelaide.

However Caven certainly found his niche here, and played 2 enormous seasons in 1997 and 1998 which co-incided with our flags, and if you include those, it elevates his status ahead of Kenny.

So, comparing apples with apples, Kenny is in front of Caven at the same age that Kenny is now, but he has the job in front of him to finish in front.

He may well do that though - he gets better every year.

I agree that if you remove those from the CV, it's no contest. Kenny would win hands down.

yeah he was less a late bloomer than a guy who benefited from our system and coaching. he was certainly good in it, but he is getting better every year since his retirement.

he really shouldn't be mentioned in the same breath as McGregor. Unless you want to include Shane Ellen as well

Wait on... Caven (and for that matter, Darren Mead) was robbed blind as far as 1997 - and to a lesser extent 1998 - AA selection goes.

Ken McGregor may be a better defender/CHB in the traditional sense, but considering Cavo's two outstanding seasons in 97/98, to bundle him with Shane Ellen is bordering on absurd.

Remember at the beginning of 1997 Perter Caven wasn’t even in the starting 18, his first game was vs. the swans when he kicked 3 goals from a half forward flank. After that he was pushed into defence to allow Nigel Smart and Ben Hart that freedom of roaming free out of defence. Ben Hart and Nigel Smart were at the peak of their careers and helped Caven and made him look a lot better player than he was, not that he was a dud, duds don’t win duel premierships. IMO

myself, i think it was only local parochialism (i.e. KG & co.) that really thought he should have been AA. we all heard it, but I never really thought he deserved it.

fine player for us don't get me wrong, but I just think time is making us even more fonder of him.

Don't get me wrong, the crop to choose from was p#ssweak that year because of poor form and injury to established stars, not to mention the emergence of four unfashionable teams. But for mine, in that particular season, Caven and Mead were still a fair way ahead of that year's AA CHB, Carlton's Michael Sexton.
