IMO has matured alot lately, and is definitely showing himself capable of possibly replacing Lloydy as Captain.

Is this likely?, or will he miss the boat and be overlooked for a younger leader in future?

Interested in opinions.

I think either Watson or Stanton for mine.

I concur.

Both should be gun MF players and great leaders by the time Lloydy retires.

Watson may be a slightly better leader but Stanton a slightly better player so it will be an interesting one. :thumbsu:

Depends when they are willing to let Lloyd relinquish the captaincy. If it happens soon then McVeigh for me, if it happens in 3-4 years then get a younger bloke. Monfries perhaps. I dont think Ryder is captaincy material.

I would assume that Lloyd will have the captaincy for another 3-4 years so while I think he'd make a good captain, Spike will probably miss the boat with a younger player getting the nod.

Exactly what I was thinking. If these two players were combined (Watson's reading of the play and Stanton's endurance) into one then they would win many Brownlows.

With a lot of younger players in the midfield in the next couple of seasons I dont think it would be a bad thing to have have rotating captains. McVeigh would be the next in line for me. The evolution of him as a player has been fantastic to watch, and captaincy would be the icing on the cake.

I am not a big fan of rotating captains. It is alright during the NAB Cup, but during the season proper I believe in a single captain.

Interesting, I would think that Ryder would be a more realistic option than Monfries. I mean Monfries shows flashes of brilliance but is far too inconsistent for my liking. When he actually keeps his intensity and hunger for the football for 3-4 quarters, then he'll get my nod (If there isn't already players overtaking him for the captaincy position)

Ryder seems like a natural born leader, not so much verbal, but in his actions and how he goes about his Football week in week out.
He sets the example that most Footballers should aspire.

My thought on the captaincy? if Winderlich keeps improving like he did last year then i can't see why he shouldn't get it. His gut running is phenomonal, he's a good kick on most occasions and leads by example.
People may not agree with me, prefering Stanton or players like that but i really believe that Winderlich can put a strong case forward if he continues to play like he did all last season.

Watson, Monfries, Stanton would probably be my frontrunners. Ryder would be abit unusual, he doesn't seem like the person who would relish the limelight.

Ill through in Gumby as well. CHF's usually make very good captains.

Good memory big boy, Not many recall Ken Fraser but according to my dads scanlen's card, one of the best CHF/ captains to play footy.

Yep you're probably right... McVeigh is a great leader and would do an excellent job of getting the most out of the boys IMO. Apparently did a good job in the practise match of firing the boys up. And i've heard a heap of great things about his 'Hirdy speech'

But he will probably miss with Lloyd doing it for the foreseeable future.

Hopefully he still gets in there and gives the boys a lift every now and then...

I'm sure that Spikes obvious leadership skills won't go to waste, Lloydy isn't exactly going to tell him to pull his head in unless what he is doing is detrimental. Need someone to cover the rest of the ground for game day leadership. The leadership group will no doubt work together as a team, with Lloyd at the top (and we know that he demands excellence).

McVeigh would be great, but I agree that he is a victim of poor timing, as I would expect Lloyd to continue for 3-4 more years as skipper.

Would love to see a (c) next to Watson's name..... bit of a smokey could be Myers as a 21-22 year old. Heard great things about his leadership, both prior to the draft and during pre-season.

Give it to Jobe. He will have something over his dad then.
And will be a clearance king for quite a few more years i would imagine.

what will he have over his dad didnt tim captain essendon, in the 1990 grand final if i recall
