Read through the thread (some funny stuff in here)....

didn't see it mentioned, but the Loaf was the headline act at the after match function too....and if you think the GF performance was bad, it was 10,000 times worse at this function.

First, it went longer and the missed notes and out of tune efforts were dismal....alcohol did help (the audience) a little to soften the blow, but lets just say Vanessa Amorosi (who sang the first set) was like the greatest singer in the world in comparison...

so as i work it out, Loaf scores maybe $500K for the GF efforts and prob the same for the after match function....lazy $mill for sounding like a pissed uncle doing karaoke at one of the kids birthday party's....

As bad as Meatloaf was......and as superior as Lionel Ritchie was last year......be aware that Ritchie pre-recorded his performance the day before and then mimed (bloody well I might add) on the actual day. Perhaps the Loaf should have taken the same approach.

Just get Mike Brady to play a tune, press play on the tape recorder for Julie Anthony's version of the national anthem and then let some balloons go.

This. No one sings the national anthem like Julie Anthony. (I remember being there in '92 when some opera singer sang it - was the worst thing I have ever heard!) Mike Brady should have sung "Up There Cazaly" - this is a football game remember, surely it makes sense to play the greatest football song of all time?

Besides, Meat's voice has left him. Nothing short of a studio engineered performance would have sufficed. He wouldn't have performed off the cuff to record it the day before.

True. You would have to leave those bits out of your recording and hope the crowd followed their cue or else those silences would be pretty embarrassing. He also chimed in half way through the crowd bit.

Fairly sure that was a live performance.

While Brady would have been better than Meatloaf, so would a 3 year old bashing some pots and pans together. Nothing in football is more tired, cliché and just plain boring as Mike Brady wailing out the same handful of average songs year after year.

Keep it simple, spend less money on foreign washed up hacks and give more support to local talent who can actually perform, are relevant in this century and have even the barest interest in the game.

I uploaded the Bat Out Of Hell part of the garbage to YouTube and Pony "whatever their name is" Tours put in a complaint and had it deleted. I'd be trying to hide it too if I held the copyright.

It was the most disgraceful effort I've ever seen by a performer (professional, amateur or tone deaf mate) and they should refund the money to the AFL.

Meatloaf and Pony whatever Tours YOU SUCK.

Yes, they could mix it up with some up there cazaly.

Anyway, i agree, just get some singers to sing the anthems that relate to afl.

It's a slap in the face to pay that kind of money to american "stars" who've never watched a game.

Sorry, but that's just nonsense. Ritchie sang live - he wasn't note perfect and he did plenty of ad-libs that could not have been memorised, they were clearly spontaneous. With lip-syncing, you will always notice a mismatch somewhere, but there wasn't one. Ritchie was changing the phrasing and rhythm at will - there's no way you could ever sync that.

The difference between Ritchie and Meatloaf is that Ritchie can still sing (and perform). I'm not sure Meatloaf was ever a very good live singer.

I don't understand why the AFL insists getting has-beens or stale local 'legends' for pre-match entertainment? Is it because they think it would appeal to the potential buyers of $1500/head GF packages?
