Just wondering where people stay or where they recommend to stay when visiting Melbourne for the footy.

Places I have stayed in the past are

Arden Motel - Situated in North Melbourne on Arden Street where the Kangaroos train. It is reasonably cheap and is walking distance from the city if you don't mind a bit of a walk but it's at the opposite side of the city to the MCG. Nice enough but nothing great. Good value and has free parking.

Victoria Hotel - Great location right in the heart of the city. Everything is short walking distance from here. Range from cheap to VERY cheap (Very cheap if you don't mind bathroom sharing). Also nothing special but for this price in this location it's as good as you could expect.

Kingsgate Hotel - I suggest to anyone NOT to go here. I have no nice words for this place. Location is fairly central though on King Street near Colonial Stadium. I only went here because it was late notice and we couldn't find anywhere else. And I didn't know how bad it was. Better than nothing I suppose.

The first two are very good for anybody looking for some average accomodation that is as cheap as you will find in the city or close to it.

Anybody else stay anywhere different in the city or walking distance.

That's where I stayed. THought it was good for the price.

There's a geat all night cafe just down the road which is good for late night feasts and that one last beer before bed.

Last weekend I stayed at the Pacific International Apartments. Located in Little Bourke Street, they weren't all that bad. Just watch out for the lift ;)

The Victoria Hotel is still my favourite place to stay in Melbourne!

Is that the one that also has an entrance onto Spencer St?

Yeah I stayed there a couple of time two years ago. It's pretty good, but with one small problem... SLOWEST ELEVATOR EVER!

We had problems with the lift at the apartments. The bloody thing wouldn't work on our way out to the dinner!

Ah ok, were you stuck in there or did you just have to use the stairs? I don't think it actually broke down when I was there it was just tremendously SLOOOOOOW.

There wasn't a staircase! There was a fire escape but we heard it was locked

When I went to the two finals in Melbourne last year, I stayed at the Friendly Backpacker, just further up from the Kingsgate Hotel, on King Street.

I liked it, it was a good location, $21 a night, clean, hospitable. First time I had to share a 4 person dorm, then the second time around, a 6 person room. There was no problems with this, the other guys were all nice English backpackers (their only faults were that they were Liverpool supporters). Toilets and showers were also of a high standard for a backpackers place. There were tv's around the place, free half hour internet time and free breakfast.

I thought it was good value, I hardly spent any time there anyway, it was basically somewhere to put my bags, clean up, get changed and sleep for 5 or so hours.

So if you're maybe a student and you're looking for somewhere really budget in Melbourne, then the Friendly Backpacker is the go people!

If you don't mind venturing to the party/shopping suburb, try the Hotel Claremont (Claremont St, South Yarra). Walking distance (2 mins) to Chapel St, 1 minute to the train station (the next stop is Richmond/MCG, the one after that is Flinders St.....max wait for train: 5 minutes; max trip time to city: 7 minutes). Best shopping in Melbourne, $12 in a taxi if you must to/from the CBD/Crown, and the clubs in the area are pretty damn good too. By moving out of the CBD, you knock a fair bit off the price. Subway/kebab/7-11/numerous noodle houses across the road. I love this suburb, 'discovered' it when me and 3 mates came across in 2001 for the Uruguay WCQ game. Wouldn't live anywhere else in Melbourne.

Cheers,

Kasey

I always stay at Lygon Lodge in Lygon Street. The guy that owns it is a family friend so I get a discount price with free car parking as I usually drive over. Clean place, nice rooms with TV and VCR. The only downside is that you see a few carlton supporters around:p ;)
